[ncc-announce] RIPE NCC Resource Certification System: Initial Deployment 1 January 2011

Dear colleagues, With just seven IPv4 address blocks available in the IANA pool, we are hurtling towards the end of an era. With this prospect, the registry function of the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) is going to be crucial to the Internet community. More than ever, it is important to know who is the legitimate holder of a block of IP addresses. With this as a primary driver, the RIPE NCC (in coordination with the other four RIRs) is planning to deploy a system that attaches digital certificates to Internet number resources (IP address blocks and Autonomous System (AS) Numbers). A more complete description of the benefits of resource certification can be found at: http://www.ripe.net/certification/ The RIPE NCC has had a beta platform for certification up and running for several months now. More than 100 RIPE NCC members have enabled certification under this pilot program, providing the RIPE NCC with valuable feedback. On 1 January 2011, the RIPE NCC will launch a hosted production system, which will allow all LIRs to generate a certificate of holdership, which will be held in a repository maintained by the RIPE NCC. Network operators will also be able to start making routing decisions based on the system as of this date. Further iterations of this system will be deployed over the coming 12 months, including the option for LIRs to host their own Certificate Authority and generate certificates for their own customers. Digital certificates have helped make business on the Internet more secure. Now we are using resource certificates to make the Internet itself more secure. Dear RIPE NCC member, Tomorrow, 3 November 2010, is the final day to register online for the RIPE NCC General Meeting November 2010. Tomorrow is also the deadline for submitting proxy forms. Registrations and proxy forms will be accepted until 23:59 (UTC). Details on how to register and submit proxy forms are given below. Meeting Details ---------------- The GM will be held on Wednesday, 17 November 2010 from 16:00-19:00. It will be held adjacent to the RIPE 61 Meeting, which takes place from 15-19 November 2010 at the Westin Excelsior Hotel in Rome, Italy. The GM will consist of two parts: - The RIPE NCC Services Working Group will begin at 16:00 and will include the presentation of the Report from the RIPE NCC. This part of the GM is open to everyone. - The second part of the GM follows immediately after and is only open to RIPE NCC members who have registered for the GM. This part of the meeting is the forum where RIPE NCC members can discuss the operations and activities of the RIPE NCC and exercise their voting rights. As a member, you can attend both the RIPE NCC Services Working Group session and the members-only section of the GM without being registered for the RIPE 61 Meeting. [Apologies for duplicate emails] Dear colleagues, The RIPE NCC, in consultation with external legal experts, created the draft procedural document, "Closure of LIR and Deregistration of Internet Number Resources". A PDF of the document is available at: http://www.ripe.net/legal/Closure-of-LIR-and-deregistration-of-INRs_final-d… The text of this document is intended to replace sections in two RIPE Documents that deal with the closure of LIRs and the deregistration of resources: - Sections 3.0 and 4.0 of ripe-301, "Mergers, Acquisitions, Takeovers and Closures of Organisations Operating an LIR". These sections are entitled "Closing an LIR" and "When an LIR is Closed by the RIPE NCC", respectively. Dear Colleagues, There is a call for nominations from the RIPE NCC service region to fill one vacant seat for a three-year term on the Number Resource Organization (NRO) Number Council (NC). The term of Hans Petter Holen, who was elected to the NRO NC in January 2008, ends on 31 December 2010. The election to the NRO NC seat will take place during a Plenary session at the RIPE 61 Meeting to be held in Rome, Italy from 15-19 November 2010. All members of the Internet community who are present at the Plenary session may vote in the election. The deadline for nominations is 15 October 2010. Any individual residing within the RIPE NCC service region is eligible for nomination, except Regional Internet Registry (RIR) staff members. Self-nominations are permitted and there is no limit on the number of terms that can be served on the NRO NC. All nominees may submit a written statement in support of their nomination for publication on the RIPE NCC website. Other individuals may express support for nominated individuals that will be published on the RIPE NCC website.
