Email issues with RIPE NCC for new LIRs

Dear all! I would like to bring one new issue with RIPE NCC to public. This situation mostly rely on new members and new LIRs. RIPE NCC started to censor email names and filter them as much as they want. And that also depends from RIPE NCC staff that take a ticket. This makes delays in ticket processing because we spend about 1-2 weeks already for new company LIRs because RIPE NCC staff refuse to continue until they see the email name they like and we have to create email by email so they like it I found this completely inconvenient, useful and unfriendly. This situation should be changed. Last months RIPE NCC changed a lot of things in the usual work and become harder to do simplest things with RIPE NCC staff. Currently RIPE stopped to accept my personal email that I use for almost 10 years. This email contains from one symbol in it's name. Please see some examples ------- In order for our Registration Department to be able to process resources requests, LIRs must first have a personal SSO account. Generic role SSO accounts such as info@ripe.net etc. cannot be accepted. We require a personal SSO account such as: Johnsmith@ripe.net for example. The email provided 1@ntx.ru cannot be accepted. ... Nicole Castaibert (RIPE NCC Support) --------- All nicknames, short names, names of the company in email also not accepted by RIPE NCC anymore. So we have to create new emails and use new emails with some name in it. But the main useless of all of that - that new LIR can change registration account email after LIR registration done. So this all they require is useless. That takes my time, time of my staff, time of RIPE NCC staff that get paid from LIR members fees. I found that RIPE NCC work does not comply with the proper quality standards and not members oriented. -- Jury Bogdanov NOC/Hostmaster +7 (499) 346-76-29

while I simpatize and agree with you, I think the issue here is that the RIPE NCC is refusing to register an LIR or even talk to a member because his e-mail address does no longer match NCC’s today’s invented rule. What will it be tomorrow? Will we all have to have name.surname@domain.tld or the NCC will refuse to communicate with us? The irony, the e-mail he received came from ncc@ripe.net, lir-help@ripe.net, hostmaster@ripe.net or an other generic e-mail address. Can someone at the NCC tell us when and (most importantly) why was this procedure changed? Why add a ridiculous restriction? elvis

New ridiculous restrictions was added last months by RIPE NCC. Most of them I find useless and they do not help RIPE NCC to reach the goal they want. This goal is to avoid fake requests from LIRs as I understood. But I am sure that RIPE NCC is experienced enough to do that without tighten nuts. -- Juri +7 (499) 346-76-29

Hello all, I would even go a few steps forward, asking why there should be any need not to register a LIR with proper person data. Trying to read between the lines one might guess you register LIRs more frequently. If so, the current policies of RIPE asking for person contacts acting, not role contacts is exactly for you. Is it really so much of a pain to register a proper mail address for a new LIR? I personally don't think so. Besides, registering a mail domain, mail address etc, doesn't really take anything more than an hour, or not? Best Regards Christian Kroeger Am 09.11.2017 um 09:24 schrieb Gert Doering:

Sorry Gert, I fixed it. - But I am sure that it's my right to select email address I want. - It's the RIPE NCC right to understand what is the name of the person they speak to. I just got update from RIPE NCC for my reports of this issue and I think have to share it. --------- I've discussed this with my colleague from the Customer Service team and this misunderstanding has been clarified. We will still need a person's name associated with the SSO account, but you will be free to use the email address you prefer. Some examples are: SSO: John Doe email address: johndoe@ripe.net This is acceptable SSO: John Doe email address: department@ripe.net This is acceptable SSO: IT department email address: johndoe@ripe.net This is not acceptable I hope this helps Regards, Andrea Cima ------------------------------------- Juri On 09.11.2017 11:24, Gert Doering wrote:

Good morning, as a newbie in the RIPE community, I was also rather surprised by this policy and thus I wanted to ask, what the motivation is for personal email addresses? Given that people change more often in companies than roles, I would think that noc@$company.ch is a more reliable way of communicating and would incur less effort on both sides. While 1@ may be impersonal does it really matter when they can just as easily make up anon.russian@? It's not unreasonable to require them to identify themselves in the email but the email address is no proof

I find that annoying, I prefer to use role accounts to deal with companies, and don't want them tied to personal details for a few reasons including - extra admin creating personal accounts, having to keep one of them as the master is a nuisance when that master one leaves the company, so you end up making a fake user people change many personal accounts = more scope for hacking, each may be used less often than a shared role account, often crazy login restrictions lead to an unmanagable mess of passwords, many expiring quickly and generating lots of nagging email. personal account = person likely the share passwords with their leaked yahoo account as they have too many logins to change the password on each month I don't want my personal profile influencing adverts on business web sites. RIPE may leak all the details so it adds to the risk of our personal data being leaked and adds to global pool of identity theft data. brandon

Dear Yuri, As we explained yesterday in our email to you, there has indeed been a misunderstandingwhich we have clarifiedinternally. It is not a problem if the email address for the SSO account is a role account. However, we do need a person's name associatedwith the SSO account. Some examples: SSO: John Doe email address: johndoe@ripe.net <mailto:johndoe@ripe.net> This is acceptable SSO: John Doe email address: department@ripe.net <mailto:department@ripe.net> This is acceptable SSO: IT department email address: johndoe@ripe.net <mailto:johndoe@ripe.net> This is not acceptable The RIPE NCC communicates with individuals and we need to understand who is submitting the requests to us. We have always required the name of an individual in our communications with LIRs. Before SSO Accounts were introduced, the RIPE NCC had always asked LIR contacts to be registered in the LIR Portal with their personal name. This requirementis there for security reasons. For example, in case of a disputed transfer itis crucial to know who submitted the request. I hope this clarifies? Best Regards, Ingrid Wijte RIPENCC On 07/11/2017 14:26, Staff wrote:

Hello all I would also like to add something to how RIPE employees respect (better not respect) new LIRs Since 3 weeks they have my emails somewhere and they do not reply to them. Phone calls are also somewhere, and despite some arrangements, they also do not respect me. I wonder if anyone has any influence on the people who work there because they ask for 3-4 weeks to contact me and I can not get on. Dear Grzegorz, In your new membership application, you set requirements which are not in line with RIPE NCC processes. These types of requests need to be escalated internally and therefore take more time to complete. However, we remained in regular contact with you throughout the process, and at points where we needed more time, we made sure to inform you and got back to you within a few days. We aim to be as accommodating as possible when members have unique requests. We are sorry that you are unhappy with the way your application has been handled, I will be happy to discuss this with you directly. Best regards, Henriette van Ingen Assistant Manager Customer Services RIPE NCC
