This is useful for router configurations and peering. Are any other internet exchanges doing this, and do you think it is an appropriate thing to do? Gert Doering: good idea, and even better to put the organisation name after each AS number on the list as a comment. Mike Hughes: even better if the database could automatically look up the database and add the organisation name. Andy Furnell, LINX: this is a good idea, but a peering set might be even better. Ruediger Volk: the AS-SET is good to have. Anything more than this should go to the database working group I think. Mike Hughes: it seems to be agreed that the AS-SET object is the appropriate object for showing members of internet exchanges on the RIPE Database. E. VoIP Peering (Mike Hughes, LINX) http://www.ripe.net/ripe/meetings/ripe-51/presentations/pdf/ripe51-eix-voip… Point from unknown speaker: traffic in Miami for VoIP is tiny. Ruediger Volk: there are regulatory issues in Germany as voice is being used, not just IP! Point from unknown speaker: there are no guarantees of quality using VoIP. Providers will want to be sure of quality before offering this service Mike Hughes: VoIP call quality can be better than PSTN in some cases. (VIX) Peering slut (?!): benefit more from using route servers, for easy management of peering sessions. 6. (AMSIX) Large public peering ports over private connections saves engineers - you set up the peering once, instead of seting-up multiple private ones. 7. (DE-CIX) Redundancy - if you have multiple connections on public peering, and your partners also have multiple connections.. Second port is usually very cheap on most IXPs. A: This model is about only one location; does not take into consideration mulitple locations. 8. Cesnet: The costs are not that high in Enurope. A: I will include those in later version of the spreadsheet. Discussion: Additional Advantages of Private Peering: Maurice from Google: - Over-subscription can be monitored also on the public peering. - You can use both. Keith Mithel: Scaling can be a problem for private peerings. Mike Hughes: People don't have enough back-haul away from the IX. Malcom, Linx: "tapping" possibility would be known much in advance. Maurice, Google: Change in the transition practices: put switches instead of routers into IX. Dear Colleagues We are pleased to announce that Rob Blokzijl, RIPE Chair, has published a new RIPE Document, "Policy Development Process in RIPE", (ripe-350). This document formally describes the policy development process. The updated process is operational from today, 1 September 2005. A new RIPE web page describes all the active policy proposals and their status. Each proposal has a page showing its history, status and all supporting documentation. This page can be found at: http://www.ripe.net/ripe/policies/proposals/index.html A new mailing list <policy-announce(a)ripe.net> has been created for announcing policy proposals and tracking them through the policy development process. This is not a discussion list; discussions will continue to take place on relevant RIPE Working Group lists and at RIPE Meetings.
