[Posted to sidrops, grow and RIPE routing-wg] Hi all, A few weeks ago I wrote a draft on extending RPKI to make it possible to validate the full AS path rather than just the origin AS. Rather than ignore other work in this area such as ASPA and AS Cones, I've decided to focus on the thing that all these efforts will benefit from: extensions to the RPKI-Router protocol so that more types of filtering become possible under the RPKI model than just origin validation as per RFC 6811. I think the RPKI model is a powerful one: you run the software that uses complex algorithms on a small set of central boxes. This is very flexible software that can be changed quickly (often open source). Then you send filters over to the routers using very well-defined semantics, so you know exactly what the routers are going to do and the risks are minimal, with no need to keep changing the router implementations when there are new validation mechanisms. My additions are: - a way to filter entire AS paths (such as created by ASPA or my PathRPKI draft) - a way to allow prefixes from a given set of ASes, which could be used to implement a system like AS Cones - a way to deny prefixes from a given set of ASes, which could be used to react to route leaks etc on the fly These are just examples, I'm sure there are many different things that could be done with these filter extensions. Path validation with RPKI

Dear secure interdomain routing operators, I've been away from the IETF for a while, and I'm new to this mailing list, so I'm not up to date with what's been happening here. I'm not going to let that stop me :-) but apologies if I retread worn out paths. Also, I'm not sure if this work ultimately fits this wg, but I think this is the right place for an initial discussion. I'm also starting this discussion on the RIPE routing-wg list. A few weeks ago there was a significant route leak through Safe Host and China Telecom. This keeps happening. I think we can stop these route leaks with a relatively modest change to RPKI: by combining the ASes the origin trusts and the ASes the operator of an RPKI relying party server trusts, we have a list of all the ASes that may legitimately appear in the AS path as seen from this particular vantage point. I believe deployment will be relatively easy, as it works for the two ASes at both ends even if ASes in the middle don't participate. So this means a change to the ROA format, a change to the RPKI-router protocol, and of course changes to the software involved. RPKI path validation is everyone filtering all prefixes they see, regardless of whether these prefixes come in through peering or transit. However, there is no reason the two can't be deployed side by side. I've also read the ASPA draft, and although there are some overlap between ASPA and RPKI path validation, I'm not entirely clear on the details but they seem to be very different. Iljitsch

Dear colleagues, A new version of RIPE Policy proposal, 2018-06, "RIPE NCC IRR Database Non-Authoritative Route Object Clean-up", is now available for discussion. The goal of the proposal is to delete an non-authoritative object stored in the RIPE IRR, if it conflicts with an RPKI ROA. The proposal has been updated following the last round of discussion and is now at version v2.0. Some of the differences from version v1.0 include: - Added reference to RFC 6811 - Clarification for Legacy Internet Resource Holders You can find the full proposal at: https://www.ripe.net/participate/policies/proposals/2018-06 As per the RIPE Policy Development Process (PDP), the purpose of this four-week Discussion Phase is to discuss the proposal and provide feedback to the proposers. At the end of the Discussion Phase, the proposers, with the agreement of the Working Group Chairs, decides how to proceed with the proposal.
