Dear colleagues,
please find enclosed the 1st draft of the agenda for the session of the
Routing WG at RIPE43, Rhodes. The Routing WG session is held
Tuesday, 10-Sep, 1.Slot: 14:00 - 15:30
2.Slot: 16:00 - 17:30
The focus this time is on the Routing Information System (RIS), but we
will also be looking at the newest RPSLng draft. Depending on how swiftly
we are moving through the presentations we may end up not using the 2nd
slot - but this remains to be checked, also depending on the discussion.
I would like to thank Joao Damas for chairing this session for me, because
I am not able to attend myself this time.
As usual: comments, additions, corrections to the agenda of the Routing WG
welcome! Btw: an updated version of last meetings minutes will be distributed
shortly.

Dear All,
RIPE NCC New Projects are pleased to announce the following activities
during RIPE 43:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
* Demonstrations of Test Traffic Measurements (TTM) and Routing
Information Service (RIS):
RIS Demo
Expert help available
Thu: 10:30-11:00
Fri: 10:30-11:00
TTM Demo
Expert help available
Thu: 15:30-16:00
Fri: 10:30-11:00
Location: Please ask at the Information Desk.
----------------------------
* TALK: "A RIS-based System for the Visualization of the Routing Flaps"
to be held on Tuesday, the 10th of September, 2002, during the Routing
Working Group session.
FlapViewer is a service that allows one to visually detect and analyze
BGP routing instabilities, usually referred to as "flaps". The system
will retrieve BGP routing announcements from the RIS and then produce
graphics of involved autonomous systems and their peering relationships
with the routing changes being shown as animations.
Speaker: Maurizio Patrignani (University of Roma III)
URL: http://www.dia.uniroma3.it/~lombardo/flapviewer/
----------------------------
* TALK: "Observations on Redundant BGP Traffic and Flaps from the RIPE
RIS Collectors" to be held on Tuesday, the 10th of September, 2002,
during the Routing Working Group session.
The objective of Agilent Labs' RIPE NCC data analysis project is to
visualize and characterize Border Gateway Protocol (BGP4) behavior. The
work is based on protocol traffic collected at exchange points around
the world by RIPE NCC's RIS. The project has two tracks: daily analysis
and long-term pattern discovery.
Speaker: Alexander Tudor (Agilent Labs)

Hi,
As most of you know, the CIDR Report was conceived by Tony Bates in 1995 as
a means to monitor and inform the community about the amount of CIDRisation
activities being carried out by Internet Service Providers.
The CIDR Report has been highly successful, much referred to and well
respected snapshot of the growth in the Routing Table, as well as providing
information on the level of aggregation being carried out in our community.
In recent years it has become more of a challenge to maintain the software
to keep up with the rapid growth in the Internet. Philip Smith, who has
produced a widely published Routing Table Report since late 1998, has
helped to keep the Report up to date with current allocation and assignment
information.
But with the large number of views of the routing table, and with the
numerous requests many individuals and organisations have been making for
enhancements to the CIDR Report, we have agreed that the future of the CIDR
Report now rests alongside the very comprehensive BGP Table Analysis which
Geoff Huston has been running for the last year.
This Friday's CIDR Report (23rd August) was the last one posted from Tony's
original system. As from the coming Friday (30th August), the CIDR Report
will come from Geoff Huston's new implementation. The e-mail will go to the
same operations mailing lists, will look very similar in layout, and will
have greatly updated information compared with the original. Furthermore,
the routing table view will be the summary from the RouteViews project.
The supporting website for the CIDR Report has been vastly improved, with
greater detail, the ability to search on aggregation effort per AS, and so
on. A snapshot of Geoff's implementation can be found at
http://bgp.potaroo.net/cidr/. Regular users of the information contained in
the CIDR Report should check out the website and the new features in the
report.
As ever, comments and feedback are most welcome; these should be sent to
<cidr-report(a)potaroo.net>.
Tony Bates, Geoff Huston, Philip Smith

It is not checked before it leaves my workstation. However, hopefully
you will find this report interesting and will take the time to look
through this to see if you can improve the amount of aggregation you
perform.
Check http://www.employees.org/~tbates/cidr-report.html for a daily
update of this report.
NEW: Check http://www.employees.org/~tbates/cidr-report-region.html for
the regional version of this report.
NEW: Check http://www.employees.org/~tbates/autnums.html for a complete
list of autonomous system number to name mappings as used by the CIDR-Report.
The report is split into sections:
0) General Status
List the route table history for the last week, list any possibly
bogus routes seen and give some status on ASes.
1) Gains by aggregating at the origin AS level
This lists the "Top 30" players who if they decided to aggregate
their announced classful prefixes at the origin AS level could
make a significant difference in the reduction of the current
size of the Internet routing table. This calculation does not
take into account the inclusion of holes when forming an aggregate
so it is possible even larger reduction should be possible.
2) Weekly Delta
A summary of the last weeks changes in terms of withdrawn and
added routes. Please note that this is only a snapshot but does
give some indication of ASes participating in CIDR. Clearly,
it is generally a good thing to see a large amount of withdrawls.
3) Interesting aggregates
Interesting here means not an aggregate made as a set of
classful routes.
Thanks to GX Networks for giving me access to their routing tables once a
day.
Please send any comments about this report directly to CIDR Report <cidr-report(a)cisco.com>.

Dear Colleagues,
[Apologies for duplicate mails]
Beginning today, 16 August, the RIPE NCC will implement "e-mail address
masquerading" for messages displayed on the web site in the RIPE and the
RIPE NCC mailing list archives. E-mail masquerading makes it more difficult
for spammers to harvest e-mail addresses from the mailing list archives.
When masquerading is applied, the e-mail address of the sender will be
hidden in the mail archived messages. Those reading archived mail will see
a return e-mail address that appears as "<somebody@localhost>". When
clicking on this e-mail address, the address of the original sender will be
loaded in your mail program, enabling you to send a message to the author.
The RIPE NCC has chosen to implement this security measure as there have
been various complaints from members of the RIPE community that e-mail
addresses were being abused by spammers for Unsolicited Bulk E-mail (UBE).
By implementing this security measure we anticipate there will be a sharp
reduction to address harvesting of archived e-mail addresses.
We will be checking for harvesters who manage to overcome this measure and
will take further steps if necessary.
E-mail masquerading will be applied to all mailing lists found in the
following directories:
http://www.ripe.net/ripencc/mail-archives/
http://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail-archives/
We appreciate your understanding on this matter.
Regards
Jeroen Bet
