Hi team, please have a look at Probe #2413, it shows connected but it seems it is not providing any measurements results. I tried different cables, power sources, connected to different switch, and finally move it to completely different location. It is v1 so it does not have USB memory stick. Please advise. Thanks Jiri
Hello, This probe is 12+ years old, it may have decided to retire after all... What we see is that it's indeed connected, gets told what to do and politely just doesn't do it any more. I'm sorry. You could apply for a new probe (there's a waiting list) or alternatively running a software probe. Regards, Robert On Sat, Oct 12, 2024 at 3:40 PM <ripe@brite.cz> wrote:

I had the same problem with the V2 probe. Flash memory has a limited number of lifetime rates, and probes that have powered on for about 10 years are probably crossing that threshold. I would love to be able to do an actual diagnosis just to satisfy my own curiosity, but it seems like the thing to do is to write the probe off and dispose of it. Hello, We started a campaign to ask hosts to resurrect probes, if possible. Sometimes that's not possible... v1/v2 probes have been used for up to 14 years (!) by now -- which is way more that what we hoped for. They were also cute :-) We still have 320 and 450 connected, respectively. Cheers, Robert On Thu, Nov 28, 2024 at 4:23 PM Phillip Remaker <remaker@gmail.com> wrote:

My V1 continues to function. All Time 12y 260d 18h 55m 96.05% Probably should spin up a virtual probe at some point. David -- https://dprall.net On 11/28/2024 10:46 AM, Robert Kisteleki wrote:

last time, when i asked why 4415 is down, i got weird politically correct answer. as if somebody looked and found out it's hardware but didn't tell anything, not even guessed it then i got curious. that's not really super secret. probes have been reversed before, despite against tos. no aliens found inside. besides, there's architecture overview too i mean, is it new upgrade image not fitting into flash? is it failed flash, from writing? is it maybe unreadable flash due regions aren't updated for 11y? is it out of ram during upgrade? and it's not connecting why? it does some ssh traffic once of while still, constantly. wildguessing it's too old ssh client for server btw, what's probe 3, that's still up too. and what's 1? This RIPE Labs article is not new, but has the answer to your question: https://labs.ripe.net/author/kistel/ripe-atlas-architecture-how-we-manage-ou... This is what I wrote there 7 years ago: "They have certainly lived well beyond their expected life time." ;-) Regards, Robert
