Dear all, The RIPE IoT Roundtable Meeting organised by the RIPE NCC took place on 21 September 2017 in Leeds and was attended by 30 community members. Here are the main points that were discussed at the meeting: - Vendors and retailers are unlikely to follow attempts at standardisation. A trusted IoT label might work, but not for low-margin/low-cost devices. - Some CPE ports should be open for advanced users only. The RIPE community could help by documenting some of the risk factors and fall-back mechanisms around and behind CPE. When blocking ports is not possible, manufacturers have the ultimate responsibility. - IoT poses a safety issue. Regulation might not be the ideal approach in dealing with this, as it would take time to implement and would increase the entry burden for starters. In the meantime, providers should step up to help minimise risks. - Assigning liability and working out who the data controller is will be a challenge. Insurance will take time to catch up. - There was strong support for a discussion on the creation of an IoT Working Group at RIPE 75. [news] New Trust Anchor and RPKI Structure

Dear colleagues, The RIPE NCC is in the process of transitioning from the current RPKI Trust Anchor arrangement to a new configuration which was agreed to among the RIRs and announced by the NRO: https://www.nro.net/regional-internet-registries-are-preparing-to-deploy-al… In this new configuration, the RIPE NCC will use an "all resources" Trust Anchor to issue a certificate for its own regional resources (IP and ASNs) only that will be used to issue certificates to its members for their holdings. The RIPE NCC will migrate to the new structure on Thursday, 28 September. What do you need to do? If you are using the hosted RPKI services, you do not need to take any action. However, the migration will require extensive re-signing to be done by our systems and this takes considerable time. We will not be able to process changes to Route Origin Authorisation (ROA) configurations during this migration and we will therefore have to turn off the RPKI user interface during this maintenance. This will take place on Thursday from 9:00 to 17:00 UTC+2. If you are using relying-party software, such as the Dragon Research Labs RPKI Toolkit(1) or the RIPE NCC RPKI Validator(2), no action will be needed. We will continue to use the same Trust Anchor so you do not need to update your Trust Anchor Locator (TAL). We will ensure that the repository remains available during the migration. We will make sure that all appropriate ROAs are re-created under the new structure before switching over the repository. Dear colleagues, This is a final reminder of the call for nominations from the RIPE NCC service region to fill one vacant seat on the Number Resource Organization (NRO) Number Council (NC). The three-year term of Wilfried Woeber, who was appointed to the NRO NC by the RIPE NCC Executive Board on 7 November 2014, ends on 31 December 2017. The RIPE NCC Executive Board will select one representative from the nominees to serve a three-year term on the NRO NC beginning 1 January 2018. The decision of the Executive Board will be announced at the RIPE 75 Meeting, which will be held in Dubai from 22-26 October 2017. The deadline for nominations is 22 September 2017. Any individual residing within the RIPE NCC service region is eligible for nomination, except Regional Internet Registry (RIR) staff members. Self-nominations are permitted. [news] Global Consultation on Identifier Technical Health Indicators (ITHI) Project

The Number Resource Organization (NRO) has developed a proposal for ITHI risk identification and definition in response to an ongoing ICANN initiative. Each Regional Internet Registry (RIR) is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of its registry data. This is critical to the reliability of the RIR Whois databases which provide access to the public data of the Registry. For the purposes of measuring the state of the data, accuracy has been defined as “comprehensive, correct, and current”. The Registration Services coordination (RSCG) and Engineering coordination groups (ECG) have developed recommendations for how the RIRs can identify and measure risk associated with registry data accuracy. We are now seeking feedback on the NRO ITHI project proposal, specifically on the definition of the risks and measurements to report on registry data accuracy.
