1. Registry
– LIR Stats
Number of LIR accounts: 20,709 (+22)
Number of members: 20,004 (+27)
IPv4 addresses transferred in August: 1,253,632 (-4,681,984)
LIRs with IPv6: 15,819 (+13)
LIRs on IPv4 Waiting List: 786
Days that first LIR in queue has been waiting: 476
% of IPv4 address space covered by ROAs: 77%
% of IPv6 address space covered by ROAs: 45%
ARCs completed in August: 238
– Restriction on the Acquisition of Additional LIR Accounts
The RIPE NCC Executive Board has decided to temporarily restrict members'
ability to acquire additional Local Internet Registry (LIR) accounts.
Taking effect on Tuesday, 29 September, the restriction also covers
requests already in progress. The decision is a first step towards
addressing the administrative burden of multiple accounts, while allowing
related questions about IPv4 allocations from the IPv4 Waiting List to be
discussed within the RIPE community.
https://labs.ripe.net/author/Gabor/restricting-the-acquisition-of-additiona…
– RIPE PDP Update
The policy proposal 2024-01 “Revised IPv6 PI Assignment Policy” has been
withdrawn.
This proposal aimed to reduce the operational burden that operators
experience when working with PI and to clarify some long-standing issues in
the IPv6 addressing policy.
The proposal was archived and can be found at:
https://www.ripe.net/community/policies/archived-policy-proposals/
Reason for withdrawal: The proposers decided to withdraw the proposal based
on the feedback received.
– The /3 Body Problem
A large chunk of IPv6 is heading for space, and every policy question about
it is currently going to be deferred to the RIR communities. This article
outlines what those questions look like, and argues why now is the time to
start asking them.
https://labs.ripe.net/author/remco-van-mook/the-3-body-problem/
2. Technology
– The IRR Landscape: What RPKI Can Replace
In the third part of our IRR landscape series, we use traffic measurements
from AMS-IX and DE-CIX to assess which parts of the IRR landscape can
safely be replaced with RPKI. Third-party ROUTE(6) objects can largely be
phased out, while third-party AS-SETs remain essential for BGP filter
generation.

3. Community and Engagement
– RIPE 93 is Just Around the Corner
RIPE 93 will take place in Sofia from 26–30 October 2026. We look forward
to bringing the RIPE community together for a week of discussions,
technical sessions and opportunities to connect with colleagues from across
the region.
If you are planning to attend in person, you can register here:

– MENOG 26: Registration is Open
MENOG 26 will take place online on Monday, 30 November 2026, from
15:00-16:30 Gulf Standard Time (GST). The 90-minute meeting will bring
together the Middle East Internet community to exchange knowledge, discuss
technical and operational topics relevant to the region, and hear community
updates.

– Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice in Internet Operations
Internet research can benefit from operational insight, and network
operators from research expertise. Building on what we learned at RIPE 92,
we look at practical ways to make those connections easier and turn
promising conversations into lasting collaboration.

– CAPIF 5: Regional Interconnectivity in Central Asia
Central Asia’s Internet looks very different than it did back at CAPIF 1.
We trace the rise of direct regional routes, stronger routing security and
new connectivity options - along with the gaps that remain.

– Moving to a New Board Structure
A governance structure is strongest when the responsibilities written down
on paper match the responsibilities exercised in practice. This proposal to
change the RIPE NCC’s governance structure is intended to make sure that
they do.

We’ll be back next month with more news!
