Dear all, Many of you have seen my presentations or engaged with me over the years within the RIPE community and beyond, discussing IoT privacy, security, and measurement challenges. I would like to formally express my interest in serving as Co-Chair of the IoT Working Group. I am currently Assistant Professor in Communications & Networking at University College London (UCL), where I also serve as Director of the MSc in Internet Engineering and Telecommunications. I am an Honorary Research Fellow at Imperial College London and Visiting Professor at Yokohama National University. My research spans privacy, security, Internet measurement for IoT ecosystems, and I am also a member of the Executive Steering Board of the IoT Security Foundation. Over the last decade, my work has focused on the intersection of IoT, privacy, and cybersecurity. I have developed tools like COPSEC, IoTrim, and ReplIoT to address privacy and security challenges in IoT environments, aligning closely with regulatory initiatives such as the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). I have collaborated with industry and regulators across the UK, EU, and Japan, leading projects on IoT security certification, adaptive privacy-preserving mechanisms, and privacy and security risk assessment. I have been an active member of the RIPE IoT Working Group, contributing with presentations, participation in discussions, and engaging with the community to bridge the gap between academic research, operational practice, and standardization efforts. Added Value as Co-Chair I believe I bring a unique profile that combines: * Deep academic expertise in IoT privacy, security, and Internet measurements; * Operational and testing insights through tool development and collaboration with industry partners; * Strong connections within cybersecurity and IoT standardization communities (IoTSF, IETF BMWG); * Experience with public engagement, creating awareness of IoT risks and best practices. Vision as Co-Chair As Co-Chair, I would like to: * Strengthen the dialogue between academia, industry, and policy makers within the WG; * Support initiatives around IoT security benchmarking, testing methodologies, and best practices dissemination; * Foster new contributions from diverse backgrounds and geographical areas; * Ensure continuity with the WG’s past work while driving new efforts aligned with emerging regulations and industry needs. I would be honored to contribute my expertise and energy to help the IoT WG continue its valuable mission. I look forward to the opportunity to support and serve the community. Dear Colleagues As Peter Wehrle's term as IoT WG co-chair is about to end with RIPE 90, this is a call for nominations or volunteers to co-chair the RIPE IoT working group. *********************************************************************** Please DO NOT reply to this message if you wish to propose a volunteer. *********************************************************************** I would like to ask for each candidate to start a new thread with, e.g., "[name] for co-chair", and for members to express their support for a candidate by replying to the respective e-mail thread. Provided there are no reasoned objections from the WG, I'd like to set May 10th as a deadline for showing support on the mailing list, so that we can announce the decision on May 14th during the IoT WG session at RIPE 90. [Co-Chair selection process]

Dear colleagues, the term of my valued Co-Chair, Peter Wehrle, ends with RIPE-90. With the changes to the Co-Chair selection process introduced for RIPE-88 we did receive well founded criticism around the procedure of the adjustment of the selection process, specifically that we did not sufficiently seek consensus on the WG mailing list. For the upcoming RIPE meeting's Co-Chair selection process, we would like to initiate a discussion about the selection process that should lead to consensus within the WG. The WG's statutes describe the process in general but not in detail (https://www.ripe.net/community/wg/active-wg/iot/internet-of-things-wg-chair…) Before RIPE-88 the following procedure was used: 1) Several weeks before the respective RIPE meeting the WG's remaining Co-Chair sends out a call for candidates to the WG mailing list. 2) Candidates start a new e-mail thread on the mailing list with i.e. "[name] for co-chair" and their application 3) WG members express their support by responding to the e-mail 4) The candidate who gains most supporters is selected as the new WG Co-chair In the light of what happened during the Co-Chair selection of the Open Source WG at RIPE-87 in Rome we did discuss something like that could be avoided. Therefore, a changed process was used for RIPE-88: 1) <same as above> 2) Candidates send their applications to the remaining WG Co-Chair 3) Several days before the RIPE meeting the remaining Co-Chair sends a list of the candidates and their applications to the mailing list 4) During the WG session at the RIPE-meeting attendees can express their support using Meetecho. This process was announced on the mailing list but may not have been discussed appropriately. We would like to address the comments received on the mailing list and at RIPE-88 to find proper consensus in the WG. As mentioned above the major reason to introduce a change was that in the event mentioned it occurred that in a very short timeframe many persons who never were active in that WG before subscribed to the mailing list and expressed support for one specific candidate. Using Meetecho for RIPE-Meeting attendees (online & offline) was an attempt to address this - but of course may exclude WG members to express their support. We're looking forward for your feedback and would like to find consensus on the procedure during the next days. Best regards, Peter

If you would like to give a presentation during the IoT WG session, please contact us at iot-wg-chairs(a)ripe.net. A talk should be 20-30 min including Q&A (usually 5-10min). We are already in the process of defining the agenda for the WG meeting but still have space for your contributions! Remote participation is also welcome, so please do not hestiate to contact us with an IoT related topic, from security considerations to networking impacts - it’s a wide field with many interesting developments! Scanning for IoT devices

Hi. I am new to this list but not new to RIPE. I am looking for stats on IoT devices similar in nature to the Shadowserver work: https://dashboard.shadowserver.org/statistics/iot-devices/map/ What they display for IoT devices are those devices that are open for port forwarding. But nowadays, the vast amount of IoT devices do not use port forwarding but are rather cloud based. Test by simply looking for Ring doorbells or Samsung refrigerators - of which there are millions. In their dashboard they are not even listed as a single device. Can someone point me to alternative data on IoT devices similar in style to the Shadowserver work - broken down by regions or countries, or by product types? Thanks, Hank
