Joakim .. HI .. long time no hear from. Well in North America is rather active right now on two fronts. First The Canadian CRTC in Jan actually ordered a Carrier ENUM DB. Yes Ordered. Look up CRTC Policy 2012-24 (link below ) discussions among the Canadian Telecom Technical Advisory Committees proceeding. The US FCC ICC/USF Reform Report and Order in December 2011 discussed that carriers are encouraged to negotiate "in good faith" on VoIP Interconnection with the goal of killing POTS once and for all. ( you don’t need to read the whole thing its 750 pages long). Negotiation in "good faith" is actually a serious regulatory term of art in US Telecom law. The END of TDM Class X and POTS is the key policy goal in a path to an all broadband network. This does not mean the end of voice or the PSTN.. or E.164 numbering. The social contract for a universal voice etc service based on E.164 numbering is still a central policy goal. Carriers that take Universal Service funds, now called Connect America, are required to offer a voice service over their broadband networks. The end of POTS was outlined in the US National Broadband Plan as well as the formal FCC Technical Advisory Committee report to the Commission. VoIP interconnection for voice is proceeding at a accelerated rate now estimated by the FCC at nearly 28% of all Voice traffic or so driven by US Cable Operators who have used the Service Provider Identification Code in the NPAC to identify the terminating carrier of record and then use bi-laterally agreed to data to find the points of interconnection ( typically the carrier Session Border Controller). This is fine for a limited set of carriers but will have scaling issues if all 1200 licensed US carriers need to participate. Key business drivers for VoIP Interconnection databases (aka ENUM) are VoLTE due to deploy in 2014 in US and SIP Trunking in the Enterprise which grew at nearly 120% in 2011. Residential ATT uVerse and Verizon FIOS now all SIP/IMS based as well. In addition there is serious concerns about the state of the TDM infrastructure with the 5ESS and DMS platforms at or near End of Life status. Parts are known to be in short supply.
