ENUM contact info should show up in LDAP

Hello, Has any of you ENUM adepts considered the possibility of unleashing ENUM data through LDAP? The thinking here is that ENUM is very suitable as a publishing contact information centrally, and LDAP is an excellent mechanism for retrieving contact information. I have not found it, but an enum2ldap gateway sounds like a useful facility to me. It would support integration with our desktops and mobile devices, and save us entering changed contact information because the original publishing source already did this. There would be a need for DNSSEC to make this sort of publication reliable, which is true for ENUM in general, of course. What is the opinion about such a translator on this list? Cheers, -Rick

As you may be aware, I have had some multilateral, but also bilateral talks with some of you wrt. the ENUM Federation and particularly its website at: http://www.enumfederation.org/ As I got it, there have recently some ideas been floated around amongst the BoD members about a very last attempt to give the idea behind the Federation a push. Reasons are, amongst others, that ENUM in the Carrier space gets more and more grip, but also in the public name space with the advent of the NRENUM activities. But although the registration of a phone number as an ENUM domain bears quite some similarity with the usual registration of a domain under a TLD, there is at least one crucial thing that might actually hinder a massive take-up in registration figures, even if all other preconditions are fully in place: that is that the registrant would never fully "own" a number where the ENUM domain is derived from - contrary to a classic domain name. There is carrier and geopgraphic number portability in place, of course - however, if one cancels the PSTN service the number comes with the number goes away too. So, the ENUM federation could also be a good place to initiate a discussion about a change in this regulation scheme, for example. Anyhow: I'd see such (re)launch activities quite complementary to what is usually being discussed and done in the ENUM WG, as the focus of the Federaion is much more on the actual promotion of ENUM in a commercial sense, if I am correct. I would be happy to take this up - and what I have heard from Niall sounds very similar. So please consider this email a kick-off to start some meaningful debate how it shoud be proceeded. Hello, Thanks for the responses. My question is thoroughtly answered: My idea for accepting SMS on an Internet server was of course technically inspired; I already was a bit weary about acceptance in the IETF and from the sound of it, this is not going to be easy. More importantly, I had thought about the opportune delivery of SMS to a broader network (creating money for the telco's from which they were sent) but not about the ability to also bypass the same SMS-sending mechanism. This does indeed give a strong incentive to telco's to not support it. Given that mobile users are discovering chat (although they still accept lock-in XMPP providers like FaceBook) I think we are already moving away from the problems of lock-in messaging. With that in mind, it may actually be safe to simply ignore SMS' closed setup. (It may even be a reason for countries or markets to demand network neutrality!) Cheers, -Rick

Why is there no "SMS center is here" ENUM record?

Hello, As far as I can tell, there is no ENUM record that says "please deliver SMS for this number at the SMS Centre at IP address 123:456::789" -- is there a reason for that? The SMS records that I've seen are in fact simulations of the SMS-sending intention over another protocol, and they are not easy. This requires the sender to either be able (and willing) to initiatie messaging using that simulation *instead* of SMS, so an SMS Centre should be able to translate the protocols. This is not likely to catch on as a general mechanism. What I am missing is a record that says "yeah sure, I'll take in SMS PDUs and will process them as my number user has seen fit to setup in the receiving messaging switch. This is much simpler, as it does not involve simulation of one protocol (SMS) over another (XMPP, email, SIMPLE) but just lets service providers map I/O channels with a generic messaging swith. This mechanism could unleash SMS to fixed numbers, thus widening the market for SMS. That could be a no-brainer for telecom operators to implement? Is this a new angle, or am I overlooking problems? NRENum.net service goes global, recognised as viable alternative to e164.arpa for academia

Dear ENUM WG participants, I'd like to kindly inform you about the latest progress of the TERENA's ENUM service for academia, called NRENum.net http://www.nrenum.net On 9 May 2012 the NRENum.net service participants agreed to change the service policy as follows: - As you may know, NRENum.net has been an ENUM service run by the National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) for trial purposes mainly targeting those countries where the Golden Tree (e164.arpa) is not operational yet. - Recently, it's turned out that (in some countries) the Golden Tree production service roll out is not progressing (due to various reasons), and it will definitely not reach out to academia, while the R&E community in Europe and beyond desperately needs a seamless and scalable dialling solution among different communication technologies. - Therefore TERENA service participants agreed to position NRENum.net as a valid alternative to the Golden Tree for academia. The number migration to the Golden Tree (where it is available) is recommended but not mandatory any more. NRENs can join the NRENum.net service whether or not the Golden Tree is available in their country. - In addition to this, NRENum.net has become a global service. The NREN of Argentina, Brazil and Australia joined the service during the last one and a half months and there are other candidates in both the Latin-American and Asia-Pacific regions. DOMAIN Object Syntax Review - Final Call

Dear colleagues, Now that all forward DOMAIN objects have been removed, the RIPE NCC is working on the action point from RIPE 62 that asked us to consider the attributes in DOMAIN objects. This topic has since been raised several times on RIPE working group mailing lists. There has been very little community response, which may suggest that these attributes are not important to anyone. After discussion with the Working Group Chairs, it has been agreed to send out a final call for comments. If there is no negative response, the syntax change outlined below will be implemented. Please send any comments to the DNS-WG mailing list before Monday, 2 April 2012. Forward DOMAIN Object Cleanup and Syntax Changes

[Apologies for duplicate emails] Dear colleagues, At RIPE 57, the RIPE NCC was asked to remove all forward domain data from the RIPE Database. The last two ccTLD operators' data was removed today, 31 January 2011. The RIPE NCC can now confirm the completion of action point AP57.2 from the RIPE Database Working Group. At RIPE 62, the RIPE NCC was asked to look at the attributes in DOMAIN objects. With the removal of any hierarchy in reverse delegations and the removal of forward domain data, we no longer see any use case for the "mnt-lower:" attribute. Other attributes that it has been suggested were used only for forward domains are: - "refer:" - "sub-dom:" - "dom-net:" The statistics listed at the bottom of this email show how many of these attributes have been added to ENUM and reverse delegation DOMAIN objects. It has also been suggested that the "nserver:" optional attribute could be made a "required" attribute in reverse delegation DOMAIN objects. It could remain optional in ENUM DOMAIN objects or it could be disallowed. The RIPE NCC asked the community in July 2011 if anyone saw any justification for the use of these attributes in ENUM or reverse delegation DOMAIN objects. We did not receive any feedback on this. If there is no justification, the syntax of the DOMAIN object can be adjusted to deprecate these attributes. Then all current DOMAIN objects in the RIPE Database can be "cleaned" to remove this data. Business rules can be added to make the "nserver:" attribute required or disallowed in different types of DOMAIN objects, if this is considered useful. The process for the signing will be: 1. Add your public key to the keyring (http://biglumber.com/x/web?keyring=4320). In order for me to be able to print the list, the deadline for this is Wednesday, 2 November 2011 at 12:00. 2. You will be provided with a printout of the keyring. It is important that you verify your own fingerprint on it with a trusted copy of your key fingerprint. 3. After we are all gathered, we will take it in turns to read our own key fingerprint so everyone else can verify it on the printout provided. It is best to check off the fingerprints you have verified on the list. 4. Next we will verify the identity of the key owner by using a legal document (passport, driver's license, etc.). The PeerConnect registry connects cable operators and their partners so they can exchange the data necessary to establish voice and video calls, SMS messages and other forms of IP communications between their respective networks. Key-Signing Key (KSK) Roll-over for RIPE NCC Zones

ENUM Trial - Validation Processes of ENUM Registrants

Hi all. My name is Miguel Duarte and I work for the Portuguese NREN FCCN, VoIP Department. We are currently conducting an ENUM Trial together with the Portuguese telecoms regulator ANACOM and several other Portuguese telecommunications companies. One of our first steps is gathering information about possible validation and revalidation processes of ENUM registrants. We contacted Niall O'Reilly that suggested us to bring this issue up to the ENUM Working Group. ENUM in France ?

Hello all, I'm Samuel Muller from L33 Networks, IT consultant, and currently works about IMS infrastructure in IXP context. I would like to know what's the landscape of ENUM in France, I realized in the RIPE 62 meeting in Amsterdam 3 weeks ago that ... France is not present ? I'm a bit afraid of, when I looked for informations from ARCEP and AFNIC websites, the case stopped in ... 2004. I'm sure there's a way to do something, and your last discussions about the future of ENUM (public ENUM is dead, ...) disappointed me a bit ! As far as I understood, there're 2 ways of applying ENUM : . the GSMA philosophy, where Tier-0 (Orange / FT so) has to manage ENUM as a french root server 3.3. and Tier-1 / Tier-2 have to follow the stuff . the ITU / RIPE philosophy, in a more open-minded context like DNS (if I'm wrong, of course, tell me !) In the first point, I agree there's no future of public ENUM, and carrier ENUM would just replace the old TDM intercos mandatory to become class 5 operator. In the case I would like to do ENUM in France as Portugal did since 3 years, what are the best ways to do that ? I'd the idea to begin by serving an ENUM 3.3. Tier-1 server in Internet peerings points to get the participation of a maximum number of actors ... Is it a good idea to think about a centralized collaborative ENUM database of emergencies number ? I'm new in the enum-wg mailing list, so maybe this topic had already be discussed, in this case if you have any perm-link to share, thank you ! .Samuel Muller.
