Dear colleagues, does anybody have a hint for me where all those "unknown"/undocumented (usually 5digit) AS numbers are coming from ? Who is assigning them ? How can they be identified ? Sorry if this is a very stupid question, but I simply don't know where else to look for them (just an example, by "accident" I do know that AS11042 is used by LoralOrion): $ whois -h whois.ripe.net -a AS11042 [...] % No entries found for the selected source(s). [...] $ whois -h whois.ra.net -a AS11042 %% No entries found for the selected source(s). $ whois -h whois.arin.net AS11042 [...] No match for "AS11042". Christian, For the ARIN database (and some others), try not adding "AS" before the AS number, as in: % whois -h whois.arin.net 11042 Orion Network Systems, Inc. From the whois.arin.net HELP we can see that the syntax to restrict the search to the AS records should be "AS 11042":
% whois -h whois.arin.net 'AS 11042' Orion Network Systems, Inc. (ASN-ONSI-NET1) (...) -- Ernesto Baschny <ernst@studbox.uni-stuttgart.de> Sao Paulo/Brazil - Stuttgart/Germany Brazilian Rock! Ernst@IRCnet - ICQ 2955403 http://br-rock.home.ml.org
