Job, Are you saying that the routing WG does not do it's job as you are suggesting that "routing problems" might disrupt the presentations? I suggest that everyone go back to work and fix their networks for everyone benefit, or do we need o have "routing 101? I can redo one of the BGP4 talks from beginning of 1990's if we forgot it all.. Today, any (forwarding) disruption longer than 200ms is unacceptable. (Did you make sure your vendor did the right thing in their HW/SW?) -Peter
We'll ask presenters to pre-recorded their talk to try to prevent local, logistcal, and/or routing problems from impacting the meeting. :-)
Kind regards,
Job, Paul, Ignas Routing Working Group Chairs

Hi, people these days often work from home, and redundant internet connection providing disruption under 200ms on last-mile isn't common comodity. There're another potential problems - like local power outages, which can affect presentation. Job is trying avoid such problems (which are out-of-scope from routing-wg perspective) and I don't understand your point here, Peter. - Daniel On 3/20/21 12:23 AM, Peter Lothberg wrote:

< apologies for ranting > i definitely can not speak for peter. but it feels as if i spend an average of three hours a day on multi-continent zoom or jitsi 'calls' with folk doing live presentations, not counting conferences. yes, there are gl!tches, as much from human causes as from technology. if i am really really lucky, i sometimes get to see a two year old! but aren't we all used to it? and i am a bit tired of "next slide please" at conferences hosted by folk hoping we can make everything appear perfect in these quite un- perfect times. i normally would not weigh in on this one; but i am quite unfond of pre-recorded talks. if it is really good, i'll catch it next month on youtube or whatever. i want as close to live talks with open mics as i can get. i want live interaction with other funny monkeys, as i can not be with them in person. otoh, if someone is uncomfortable presenting live and prefers to pre- record, i bow to their personal preference. this is all hard enough on folk already. i suspect peter's point was that, if the internet does not work well for this, well aren't we the ones who are responsible for fixing it? randy --- randy@psg.com `gpg --locate-external-keys --auto-key-locate wkd randy@psg.com` signatures are back, thanks to dmarc header butchery

my 2c on this is: agree. If the talk is pre-recorded, the impetus for watching it live is negated, I'll just add it to my watch list and maybe get to it. Appreciate this is an 'emotional gut feel' reaction but we're all human.

+1, no issue if the presenter's preference is prerecord. My preference is to talk live and try and feed off the energy of that. - Barry

Hi all, The topic of pre-recorded presentations was discussed at the RIPE WG chairs meeting after RIPE 81. Many people on the call felt that while there might be good reasons, this should be the exception as it doesn’t allow for the interaction we would like to see at RIPE Meetings. Some WG chairs are considering to make some (possibly pre-recorded) presentations available prior to the RIPE meeting to allow for more discussion time at the meeting itself. Watching pre-recorded talks live wasn’t seen as the best use of RIPE meeting time. Kind regards, Mirjam

Hi all, The expectation is that we can watch material in the way it was intended, and have the presenter around for live Q and A / discussion. Presenters can even answer questions while the information is being distributed, which I find to add a new level of interaction previously not possible! If a presenter doesn’t want to prerecord (preference for living on the edge and doing it “live!”) that is fine too. We won’t force anyone to present live, however we do expect folks to be around to cover the interactive element (which indeed is important). I’m not suggesting the meetings are turned into linear television, that indeed would not be adequate, rather that the formats of NANOG/NLNOG/Django is followed. Any presentation proposals on the topic of Routing are welcome, and whatever delivery format the presenter envisions as the best method to share their knowledge will be considered and facilitated with what resources we can muster. Proposals can be send to routing-wg-chairs@ripe.net Kind regards, Job
