Peter,
We are at the point where action has to be taken, either to get CIDR the "proper way", or by forced proxy aggregation at some places in the Internet.
Let me suggest to pursue a combination of both. Folks who are willing and able to cooperate should pursue the "proper way", and the rest may be subject of proxy aggregation (which may be "forced"). Yakov.
Fine with me, but WHO does the pushing? People that already have all thedata and are registring routes like Merit? -Peter
Peter, this is a lot like traveling at high rates of speed. The "market" has left a brick on the throttle. CIDR is a bit like a hand brake. -IF- we pull up to a full stop, its likely the brake will fail, we drop the transmission on the street and/or the engine blows up. What I have seen this two weeks is a tamping on the brakes to see that they work, then increasing presure to start slowing down. Expect more nets to fall off, perhaps to the point that we reach parity with the adds. I'll be real pleased (and a bit surprised) if we actually reduce the total size of the tables. -- Regards, Bill Manning
Expect more nets to fall off, perhaps to the point that we reach parity with the adds. I'll be real pleased (and a bit surprised) if we actually reduce the total size of the tables. Actually, I've been watching route-server.cerf.net. We hit 20k the week of IETF and have broken 21k. We have seen some fluctuation in size, but it's not clear if this is due to CIDR or normal weekly bouncing. Tony

This is good. But we need to do better. I wish I could type. Tony

Funny you should mention Merit. We have been contacting the regionals and working with them to move to BGP4 (if they have not) and to aggregate (if they have BGP4). Are other transit nets working with their feeder ASs? --Elise

Peter, When I checked today I noticed that there are about 1,200 more specific routes that are covered by aggregates (unless my perl code is broken). I suspect most of these could be withdrawn but it may be that providers are still waiting to see if any bad things happen. Certainly dropping another 1,000 would help. It is hard to critisize people who are "doing the right thing" for doing the right thing cautiously. Then again it isn't hard to get annoyed at those who are doing nothing, but I'm not sure who that would be. Curtis
Could the RIPE and Merit folks please analyze the current routing tables looking for the largest blocks of addresses that could be aggregated and determine who they belong to? This way we can look for maximum leverage. I know you guys don't want to hear this, but it is a good idea to look for similar leverage via renumbering. If every provider did a quick scan of their customners with pre-CIDR allocated class Bs and Cs, figured out how many hosts there are withing each of these network numbers, and contacted those who have fewer than (let's start low) 10 hosts and got them to renumber, we could get real savings. How many class Cs are out there to service a slip line going to someone's house and a few machines? We are in the middle of renumbering a couple of K-12 nets like this in New Mexico, placing them within a CIDR block (thanks to Phil Wood/LANL). The work takes a short time (small number of hosts). Net effect will be these routes turn into vapor. Think globally, act locally, peter

We are doing this daily on a per AS basis assuming no holes. It can be found in directory ftp.ripe.net:cidr/stats. I think it is up to the ASes to do it. Here is tonights version. Do you have an estimate on the holes?
We are doing this daily on a per AS basis assuming no holes. It can be found in directory ftp.ripe.net:cidr/stats. I think it is up to the ASes to do it. Here is tonights version. The "bottom line" (literally) is interesting. Comments welcome.

--Tony.
That data was collected just after the Boston IETF. What the original data showed was the effects of "forwarding table compression" or combining adjacent routes who's next hop was the same to reduce the number of forwarding entries that needs to be placed on smart forwarding cards, regardless of CIDR savings or lack of CIDR savings. That technique may be of use to us if routing table growth continues (since our main processor can hold tons of RAM but our forwarding cards are our limiting factor). Shortly after that, I modified the program to consider full AS path and do the same mechanical operation with and without including holes. This was thought to be an upper and lower bounds on CIDR benefit in those pre-CIDR allocation days. The code is based on NSFNET modified AIX 3.1 netstat output (remember we used to have things called region routes which were like ISIS areas). The original code is still lying around, but it isn't of much use. It would need to be rewritten to use a gated dump or other input source and I don't think the excersize is particularly useful. What might be useful is running the forwarding table compression to see what gains we could get for things like NSS that are constrained by the forwarding card design but can take huge main memories. It might also be useful to run the "no holes" estimate based on full AS path since that would give us the _actual_ benefit of automated aggregation if we were to get rid of the longest match preference. I don't have the time to do these at the moment. I'm collecting the routing tables for the first on the hopes I'll find some time and anyone can do a gated dump or "sh ip bgp" and do the second to determine their own expected benefit. Curtis

Could the RIPE and Merit folks please analyze the current routing tables looking for the largest blocks of addresses that could be aggregated and determine who they belong to?
This way we can look for maximum leverage.
Oops. Forgot to include the full explanation of the table in my last message. Before people ask, here it is: This shows a daily analysis of the networks (classful) routed in the Internet per AS and the amount of networks after aggregation at the AS level. The aggregation assumed is without any holes whatsoever. Of course not every AS can aggregate at the AS level so for some ASes the "NetsCIDR" figure may be difficult to reach. It should also be noted that an AS where figures for NetsNow and NetsCIDR are the same may well mean the AS has already done as much aggregation as is possible (AS224 is a good example of this).
