I can't see any evidence for "operator .. opinion ... has been largely against" from the discussion in the RIPE routing WG.
Note "other forums". I wasn't a subscriber to routing-wg when this was discussed on IDR and NANOG.
I didn't realise asdot was discussed by the RIPE membership prior to RIPE NCC implementing it. Would you know roughly when (best of all Subject line) so I could go check archives? My prior googling failed to show any such discussion.
I'm not sure whether it was discussed on the mailing list. It *was* discussed in various WG meetings at RIPE meetings, both prior to implementing it ("this is the plan, what do you think about it?") and after that, taking criticism in, and trying to find a way forward.
