Probably they are using low or medium earth orbit satellites, which _are_ damn fast in orbit. Otherwise the round trip time would be unacceptably high.
The announcement is generated by the earth stations, and those are *not* fast. All the available papers clearly describe that - the BGP isn't coming from the plane itself, and the BGP announcement is supposed to change only when crossing to another continent.
