Inconsistent repository state for rrdp.ripe.net

Dear colleagues, Yesterday, 19 September 2022, between 14:36 and 15:08 clients may have observed an inconsistent state of rrdp.ripe.net. After becoming aware of a potential issue, we mitigated the problem by switching to our secondary RRDP infrastructure before starting our investigation. During the incident, the RRDP repository https://rrdp.ripe.net/notification.xml referred to files that were not available. Out of over 14.5k requests (excluding traffic after failover), 5289 requests resulted in a 404 response. According to our logs and external monitoring, the rsync repository rsync://rpki.ripe.net was fully available during this period, although the service may have been slower than usual due to a high IO load. The trigger of this incident was an automatic failover to a backup publication server, where the primary server recovered in a matter of seconds, which resulted in an automatic switch back. From our logs, we observed that HTTP Keep-Alive kept the CDN connected to the backup server for notification.xml and new connections for snapshot and delta files were made to the primary server. We recognize that this is a similar outage report as the one from 12 September [1], and will continue with fixing these race conditions in our infrastructure. Call for Working Group Participation: MANRS+

Hi, MANRS is looking for volunteers to join a new working group to explore the idea of creating a second, elevated tier of MANRS participation for organizations that comply with more stringent requirements and auditing. We’re calling this MANRS+ at the moment, though that’s only a working title. MANRS has traditionally been focused on peer-to-peer relationships, but we believe generating customer demand could be a powerful driving force for better routing security. If we can enhance the business case, customers will demand better routing security of their network connectivity providers and providers will ensure they’re following best practices and staying in compliance with the MANRS actions that stop routing security incidents. HTTP 404 Errors for rrdp.ripe.net

Dear colleagues, This morning, 12 September 2022, during scheduled maintenance, the state of rrdp.ripe.net was inconsistent between 09:35 and 09:50 UTC. After becoming aware of a potential issue, we switched to secondary RRDP infrastructure before starting our investigation, mitigating the problem. During the incident, the RRDP repository https://rrdp.ripe.net/notification.xml referred to files that were not available, and 3480 requests resulted in a 404 response out of more than 10.97k requests (lower bound, excludes traffic after failover). According to our logs and external monitoring, the rsync service at rsync://rpki.ripe.net was fully available during this period. The alert we received indicated that notification.xml was missing while the delta/snapshot files were unavailable, which delayed our response to the incident. As an immediate action, we have already started making necessary changes to improve our alerting. We will continue investigating the root cause and focus on possible race conditions during the shutdown of the publication server (which could have happened during patching).
