Dear colleagues,
a couple of news from RIPE-75: you might find useful to know about
them before the WG minutes are published.
1)
Please find enclosed the NWI-5 proposal of the DB working group,
which might be of interest for those who use the RIPE DB as input to
build BGP filters.
The proposal was discussed in the DB working group mailing list and at
the RIPE-75 meeting. The DB WG co-chairs have declared it reached
consensus and the implementation is progressing.
2)
Joao Damas decided to step down as routing WG co-chair; your new
co-chair is Ignas Bagdonas.
On behalf of the WG, I wish to thank Joao for his many, many years
in support of our activities and I welcome Ignas as new co-chair.
As always, you can reach us at <routing-wg-chairs(a)ripe.net>.
Regards,
Paolo Moroni
Routing WG co-chair

Subject: [db-wg] NWI-5 Out of region ROUTE(6)/AUT-NUM objects implementation request
DB-WG Members,
Support was shown for the proposal NWI-5 and no objections were raised
after this round of discussion. At this time, the chairs request that the
RIPE NCC schedule implementation of NWI-5 as described.
This request is to remove origin: and flag route objects as specified.
The db-wg therefore ask the RIPE NCC to prepare an impact analysis,
followed by an implementation plan and timeline for this request and the
other issues raised in the problem solution of NWI-5 as follows:
1) Remove the "origin:" authorization requirement.
2) Flag "route:" objects for non-RIPE-managed space with "source:
RIPE-NONAUTH" to identify non-authoritative data.
Thank you all for your work on this proposal!
Kind regards,
William & Denis
DB-WG co-chairs

Dear Ruediger, routing-wg,
Today at the microphone Ruediger asked "Where can I read the solution?".
The procedure to move work through db-wg is described here:
https://www.ripe.net/manage-ips-and-asns/db/numbered-work-items
We are now in "phase 2", which states: "For the NWI to move to Phase 3,
the RIPE NCC has to provide the working group with a summary of their
understanding of the solution, and the chairs declare consensus on the
group's acceptance of this summary."
The summary of RIPE NCC's understanding (who are the people supposed to
implement the request) will probably be the closest thing to a formal
description of what the proposed change entails.
RIPE NCC was tasked to do their part through this email
https://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail/archives/db-wg/2017-October/005711.html
So, we are now waiting for RIPE NCC's feedback. This step serves to
ensure that the NCC's understanding and the working group's
understanding actually are aligned.
Kind regards,
Job
ps. I'll try to summarize the 2 changes for the benefit of the working
group. There has been extensive discussion on _why_ these two changes
are deemed helpful, that discussion can be read here:
https://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail/archives/db-wg/2017-October/thread.html
1) To put the "removal of origin authorization" in context of RPSS.
Section 6 (https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2725#section-6) states:
"The key attributes in a route object (key with regard to making it
unique) contain both an address prefix and an AS number, known as
the origin AS. The addition of a route object must be validated
against the authorization criteria for both the AS and the address
prefix."
Essentially that aspect is changed to:
"The key attributes in a route object (key with regard to making it
unique) contain both an address prefix and an AS number, known as
the origin AS. The addition of a route object must be validated
against the authorization criteria for the address prefix."
2) Furthermore, if the route/route6 object falls outside the address
space pool that RIPE NCC manages, instead of "source: RIPE", "source:
RIPE-NONAUTH" is used to signify that the RIPE IRR is not an
authoritative source for information about that address prefix.

New on RIPE Labs: Power Prefixes Prioritisation for Smarter BGP Reconvergence

Dear Olivier and Job,
Thanks for your feedback, and sorry for delayed answer (I thought I was
already subscribed to the mailing list, but I was not). I was sure the
question about PIC and ADD-PATH was going to appear, and I am going to
address it in the presentation. The answer is that we mainly target
scenarios where you can't use PiC either because the operator is using next
hop self (which we understand is fairly common) or because there is no IGP
to update the pointer.
Going back to Job's questions:
1) Would it perhaps make sense to rank updates by BGP next-hop (using a
metric like traffic volume), rather than destination prefixes themselves?
Each BGP next-hop in effect represents a group of prefixes.
We are not pushing any ranking algorithm. We used the traffic because it
was the most relevant concern at that moment, but we can also consider
other algorithms. For instance, we received a comment about considering
critical services like the DNSs at the top of the list. For sure I agree we
can consider ranking traffic by next hop, but as we are mainly targeting
the next hop self situation this can be tricky.
3) Are you looking to publish your work in context of IETF or IRTF?
We are still to decide how and where to present this. IETF is definitely
one option. Any suggestions about how to go about resenting this in the
IETF?
do you suggest to just have an informative presentation in something like
GROW WG or do you think it would make sense to write a draft describing the
mechanism and see if any WG is willing to take this on?
BR,
Juan Brenes

Dear colleagues,
Please find this new article on RIPE Labs by Juan Brenes, one of the
RACI fellows at RIPE 75:
Power Prefixes Prioritisation for Smarter BGP Reconvergence
Every day the Internet experiences failures that affect the reachability
of certain zones (i.e prefixes), such as cities, countries, etc.
Whenever such events happen, the routing information, which is the path
that information must follow in order to get from one place to another,
must be updated so that the failure is circumvented and the zone becomes
reachable again.
https://labs.ripe.net/Members/juan_brenes/power-prefixes-prioritisation-for…
Juan will present this topic at the Routing WG session later this week.
Kind regards,
Mirjam Kuhne
