Dear All, C-BGP is an efficient and open-source simulation tool that allows to simulate the behavior of the intra- and interdomain routing protocols in large ISP networks. C-BGP is able to simulate networks with thousands of routers. A key feature ofco C-BGP compared to other simulators is that it is able to support the complex routing policies that are used by ISPs. Thanks to the support of France Telecom R&D, we have been able to use C-BGP to reproduce the behavior of BGP in a large Tier-1 ISP network. For this analysis, we have developped several tools to automatically convert the BGP configurations of Juniper (JUNOS) and Cisco (IOS) routers, the IGP topology and the BGP routes in the C-BGP format. With these tools, any network operator can easily build a C-BGP model of his/her network. With such a model, it is possible to perform different types of analysis on the ISP network, such as : - predicting the flow of the traffic through the network or determining the traffic matrix based on Netflow data (see article in January issue of ACM SIGCOMM Computer Communication Review) - predicting the impact of adding a new peering link on the BGP routes selected by the routers (see article in Nov/Dec issue of IEEE Network Magazine) - predicting the impact of link or router failures on the ISP network You can obtain C-BGP, the conversion tools and several papers describing the utilization of C-BGP to model an ISP network or compute traffic matrices from : http://cbgp.info.ucl.ac.be The website also contains several examples, such as a complete C-BGP model of the Abilene Network based on their publically available JUNOS configurations files. We believe that C-BGP could be very useful for ISPs willing to optimise the distribution and the selection of the BGP routes in their network. All, I was asked to re-announce our tool to this forum as some people might have missed the original announcement on the nanog mailing list. BGP-Inpsect is a project from Merit Network Inc, and the University of Maryland which provides easy access to archived BGP data from various archives such as Routeviews or RIPE. Uptill now the only data that was available thru our database was a subset of the Routeview data. Additional BGP-Inspect sites are now available as well. This should provide much better visibility than before. The new sites are: - BGP-Inspect-RIPE(http://bgpinspect.merit.edu:9090): Partial RIPE BGP update data, Data from Jan 1 2006 onwards - BGP-Inspect-Merit(http://bgpinspect.merit.edu:8080): Partial Merit BGP update data, Data from Jan 1 2006 onwards The old site was: - BGP-Inspect-Routeviews(http://bgpinspect.merit.edu) Partial Routeviews Data, Data from Aug 1 2005 onwards A new feature that we wanted to announce that has not seen a lot of use is the ability to select multiple "peers" in a single query. Hello group, I want to raise up again the question about world BGP routing table. I don't know what is the result after last discussion (Oct.2005), but maybe peer pressure is not the only way to follow regarding the solution. What a big transit provider can do about customers of it's customer, which politics is "i pay, so i want to do what i want with my AS/prefixes"? I know network administrator, who says "I advertise all my networks as /24's (few /19's...), just because i don't want somebody else to be able to advertise them as more specifics and blackhole me - this is our security policy". There are others, whit PA space, not multihomed, but with own AS number, advertising specific networks just because "it's cool to use my AS number". Or even worse - the combination of the two mentioned above. Also, there are administrators who don't know about aggregating - "I got my 8 class C networks from my LIR, and i advertise them one by one". We have tools like CIDR-repors. Think about this scenario: volunteers spending few hours per week and catching such networks, contacting via email the network administrators, and ask them to aggregate. I have success with this, but only for administrators that i know personally. But i feel inconvenience to contact other people and to say them "Why you don't aggregate your networks? Help for stopping routing table growth!" It sounds sluggish, but it's more than nothing.
