Dear all,
On the #DENOG IRC channel I was asked for current stats on the number of
RPKI-invalid IRR route/route6 objects in various databases as follow-up
to a talk at RIPE81 [0]. I figured I should share this with the WG too.
Below is a table with today's stats of number of invalid route/route6
objects when one applies the RFC 6811 origin validation algorithm with
as input prefix value in the "route:" attribute and the origin AS in the
"origin:" attribute.
invalids invalids
AFRINIC: ipv4: 359 - ipv6: 12 - authoritive
ALTDB: ipv4: 1 - ipv6: 191 - note 4
APNIC: ipv4: 21861 - ipv6: 1880 - authoritive
ARIN: ipv4: 814 - ipv6: 65 - authoritive
BBOI: ipv4: 44 - ipv6: 1
BELL: ipv4: 322 - ipv6: 0
JPIRR: ipv4: 95 - ipv6: 4
LACNIC: ipv4: 0 - ipv6: 0 - authoritive (note 3)
LEVEL3: ipv4: 12925 - ipv6: 182
NTTCOM: ipv4: 65513 - ipv6: 730
RADB: ipv4: 208901 - ipv6: 12829
RGNET: ipv4: 2 - ipv6: 0
RIPE: ipv4: 28390 - ipv6: 3518 - authoritive
RIPE-NONAUTH: ipv4: 5 - ipv6: 0 - note 5
TC: ipv4: 0 - ipv6: 0 - note 2
Some notes on the above table:
1) ARIN-NONAUTH is not listed, ARIN deprecated this IRR source a month
ago [2].
2) TC achieved a perfect 0/0 score by using the IRRd v4 RPKI integration
[3].
3) LACNIC's IRR service is an information proxy for RPKI ROAs valid
under the LACNIC Trust Anchor. This by definition means that all IRR
objects in the LACNIC IRR database are RPKI-valid.
4) ALTDB periodically runs a script to delete RPKI-invalid objects
5) RIPE-NONAUTH imposes a two week delay before deleting RPKI-invalid
objects, so the 5 IPv4 objects currently marked as invalid with
disappear in the next few days, unless the covering RPKI ROAs are
withdrawn before the timer expires.
The stats are generated by downloading the IRR database dump for each
source and running a simple python script [1].
Kind regards,
Job

Dear Colleagues,
Early this year we announced [1] that we published the source code of our trust anchor software.
We thought it would be interesting to share how we did this and what influenced certain decisions in the process. So at RIPE-84 we scheduled a talk about this in the Open Source Working Group [2].
Hope to see you there.

Dear colleagues,
The RIPE NCC recently migrated one of the Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) they use to handle keys in RPKI. In this new article on RIPE Labs, Ties and the team give a detailed overview of the role HSMs play in the broader RPKI system and talk through the steps they took to carry out the migration:

Dear colleagues,
Last week, on Wednesday 4 May 2022, 14:00 UTC, we held a RIPE NCC Open House on the topic of RPKI Data.
You can find the recording here: https://www.ripe.net/participate/meetings/open-house/ripe-ncc-open-house-rp… <https://www.ripe.net/participate/meetings/open-house/ripe-ncc-open-house-rp…>
Thank you to all who participated, I thought it was a useful session and I enjoyed the discussion and feedback we received.
During the session I promised to send an e-mail to this list with a summary of all data and visualisations we currently have public for RPKI:
Visualisations:

My key take aways from the session:
-Ruediger Volk asked for an inventory of our current data, visualisations and tools. I started by this e-mail to the Working Group and I’m still considering how to make them easier to find on our website.
-Randy Bush noted that experiments will/might pollute our data. Ties suggested to add known experiments to the GitHub dataset description.
-Mingwei Zhang mentioned that he is currently working with Emile Aben and Agustin Formoso on “when did a VRP appear/disappear” feature for RIPEstat. This will be a very valuable addition for trouble shooting.
-John Kristoff would like to see statistics on the time it takes from the moment someone hits “submit” in the LIR portal for a ROA, to the moment the VRP is visible in the repository and when it is seen picked up by routers.
-Job Snijders mentioned that it would be beneficial to have ftp.ripe.net/rpki <http://ftp.ripe.net/rpki> data available as rsync://ftp.ripe.net/rpki <rsync://ftp.ripe.net/rpki>
-Amreesh Phokeer suggested a more granular data set for Trust Anchor data. This is currently a daily dump. We are interested to hear how granular would be useful. Also Amreesh would be interested in statistics about revoked ROAs.
-Ruediger Volk added that he would be interested in data that shows how frequent CRLs are used. Job Snijders provided insight in his mail to the WG: https://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail/archives/routing-wg/2022-May/004566.html <https://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail/archives/routing-wg/2022-May/004566.html>
-Sacha mentioned that it would be useful to have a tool that would show how a ROA would impact a route, without actually creating that ROA, or for a prefix that you don’t have holdership of.
-Nathalie said that she would like to get rid of the world map, as it is now well-known and does not include IPv6. A better alternative, that includes IPv6 can be found on: https://rpki-maps.nlnetlabs.nl/ui/world.html <https://rpki-maps.nlnetlabs.nl/ui/world.html>
We’re looking into all your suggestions and where possible implement them. Stay tuned :)
If I missed something, or if you want to share your thoughts, have suggestions, please send an e-mail to the list or directly to us on rpki(a)ripe.net <mailto:rpki@ripe.net>
Kind regards,
Nathalie Trenaman

Hi,
A question was raised during today's RPKI Data Open House: "are CRLs used?"
Just now I ran some statistics on today's RPKI state using the 5 RIR TALs:
* There are 30,914 CRL files.
* In totality, these 30K CRLs list revocations for 331,637 serials.
* 5,369 CRL files don't list revoked serials (at this point in time).
* On average, the non-empty CRLs list 12 revoked certs.
Further analysis can be performed using this JSON representation of the
global RPKI state:
https://console.rpki-client.org/dump.json (174 megabyte)
https://console.rpki-client.org/dump.json.gz (38 megabyte)
The dump.json file is regenerated a few times a day.
Kind regards,
Job

Dear colleagues,
Today, between approximately 6:41 UTC and 10:31 UTC, 503 responses were served
for rrdp.ripe.net from multiple CDN edge locations in the United States. When we
received a report of this issue at 12:09 UTC, we mitigated potential issues by
switching CDN providers before starting our investigation.
The CDN in use at the time uses a cache between the origin and edge locations.
We expect the issue to be limited to CDN edge locations in Atlanta and Dallas
(usatl1-edge1, usatl1-edge2, usdal-edge1, and usdal-edge2). Due to this location,
this issue was not visible to us from our monitoring locations in Europe. We
monitor that the objects in the RRDP snapshot that each CDN provided caches are
in sync with our CA system but do not monitor individual CDN edge locations.
However, during an extended outage, relying party instances will fall back to
rsync. We did not observe a significant increase in the rate of rsync
connections during the outage period. No rsync connections were dropped because
of rsync capacity, with a peak of 200 connections and the 15-minute average
peaking at 68 connections. Based on this, we expect the impact to have been
limited.
We are still investigating the exact impact. Please share any information you
have on this issue with us via rpki(a)ripe.net.
Kind regards,
Ties de Kock
