Hi Marco,
[cc: routing-wg]
Thanks for the work y'all have been doing to sort out some of the DNS
scoping issues. This is really worthwhile and it looks like it changes
the proposed text from something which was completely unworkable to
something which isn't entirely unreasonable.
I had a quick skim through the rest of the document and came across
Amendment 13:
> (54a) In order to safeguard the security and to prevent abuse and
> manipulation of electronic communications networks and services, the
> use of interoperable secure routing standards should be promoted to
> guarantee the integrity and robustness of routing functions across
> the ecosystem of internet carriers.
> Justification
> Interoperable secure routing standards are for example Resource-PKI.
I'm quite concerned to see this thrown into the proposed directive at
this time.
Speaking as an operator who implements RPKI in multiple contexts, I'm
not confident that it's matured as a technology to the point that it
would be advisable to codify it in legislation.
There are several reasons here, e.g. protocol limitations,
implementation limitations and potential future scope creep.
The protocol limitations relate to the fact that RPKI currently only
deals with route origin validation, and it is trivial to bypass the
security gains it provides. Geoff Huston has written a couple of
articles on this over the last while, and while there are legitimate
reasons to want to deploy RPKI, it's also important to understand what
it can and cannot do at the moment. In particular, it lacks any scope
for routing policy management, which is an integral part of routing
security.
Operationally, there are still significant problems relating to RPKI TA
availability and integrity, and there's been a good bit of discussion on
the ripe routing-wg and at the ietf about local cache synchronisation
problems.
In terms of scope creep, I'd be concerned that if legislators feel that
RPKI is appropriate to name in legislation, they may also feel that
there might be benefit to other protocols which have been defined with
the aim of addressing routing security. BGPsec would be one of these.
I totally get why legislators would feel that adding routing security
into the cybersecurity directive would be a good thing to do, but I
don't think we're there yet with the technology side of things.
Would it be possible to see whether there's consensus on this position,
and whether we could present some of this to the EUPARL committee in the
same way that the DNS proposals were handled?
Nick

Hi RIPE NCC, hi all,
In today's troubleshooting adventure, an operator experienced difficulty
pinpointing where exactly a connectivity issue between them and
rpki.ripe.net (193.0.6.138 + 2001:67c:2e8:22::c100:68a) resided.
It would be helpful if RIPE NCC reverted disabling responding to ICMP
echo requests originating from the Internet. Would it be possible to
adjust the firewall settings to accomodate troubleshooting and
monitoring?
Right now connectivity testing has to be performed directly against the
rsync daemon's internet-exposed TCP port (873) - but it would be much
cheaper and faster for both the tester and the service hoster if instead
ICMP echo requests could be used as an early warning system (rather than
the rsync service itself).
$ ping -c 6 rpki.ripe.net
PING rpki.ripe.net (193.0.6.138): 56 data bytes
--- rpki.ripe.net ping statistics ---
6 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss
The above test result differs compared to sending echo requests to
molamola.ripe.net or manus.authdns.ripe.net.
Kind regards,
Job

Hi all.
TC IRR, an IRR operator focused on Brazilian networks, just changed to IRRd
4.2.
The new version allowed TC to deploy RPKI validation (thanks NTT for
sponsoring that development) and expose HTTPS endpoints for WHOIS and
submission that we hope will foster innovation around the database.
Every precaution was taken for this migration to be seamless for other IRR
operators, including matching of serial numbers. Every IRR server that
mirrored TC and supported -j status query was verified that it followed and
still correctly follows database journals.
But if anything appears broken, please let me know or e-mail
db-admin(a)bgp.net.br.
Thanks,
Rubens

Re: [routing-wg] [anti-abuse-wg] AS8003 and U.S. Department of Defense routing

[ brian lured me into the abuse circle; so reposting with routing ]
interesting wg to do routing security analysis.
as i do really not know the dod's or their proxy's motive(s), i can not
say much about their tactics let alone strategy.
i do know, and have actually seen and experienced, part of 11/8 being
used as if it was 1918 space; ripe bologna was the first time. and the
food in that town was fantastic!
a /8 telescope would pick up leakage patterns as well as the current
shotgun blast of announcements (i presume folk have looked at the actual
announcements). i would naĆÆvely think that the /8 might be slightly
more easily analyzed than the pieces.
maybe, as the telescope analysis shows focused leaks, they are trying to
disrupt those focused uses with these focused announcements.
but, if an op is using 11.12.666.0/23 internally, would they be careless
enough to accept an exogenous announcement of that space? i guess i
should not underestimate carelessness.
is some random (small, i hope) isp using my address space internally as
1918 equivalent abusive, beyond their customers maybe not be able to
reach my network? if so, maybe the vigilantes are looking in the wrong
direction.

Dear group,
I'd like to draw your attention to an excellent article on an intricate
interaction between BGP and TCP which can result in 'zombie routes' in
the BGP Default-Free Zone.
https://blog.benjojo.co.uk/post/bgp-stuck-routes-tcp-zero-window
My current running theory on the root cause of some mishaps in the
global routing system is that certain BGP implementations can end up in
a broken state where such systems will still generate and send out
KEEPALIVE messages, but are unable to process other BGP messages (and
such a system instructs all its peers to not send new data by signalling
a zero TCP receive window). This is "Problem #1".
"Problem #2" is that almost all BGP implementations are unable to
robustly deal with systems suffering from Problem #1. Allmost all BGP
implementations assume that when KEEPALIVE messages don't make it across
the wire, the remote system will initiate the session tear down. But of
course, if the remote system is in such a broken state that it can't
issue session tear downs ... the combined system state is perpetually
broken.
The Security Section of https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/draft-spaghetti-idr-bgp-sendholdtimer
elaborates on three detrimental facets of the above situation.
It is quite rare for systems to end up in the "Problem #1" state, but
when it happens, all systems connected to the broken node probably are
better off disconnecting from such a system than perpetually forwarding
(and potentially blackholing) Internet traffic into the broken system.
Kind regards,
Job
