Dear all, As some of you are aware, the RIPE NCC has been working on a new service for RPKI, called Publish in Parent. This service is intended for RPKI users who have chosen to run their own Certificate Authority (delegated RPKI) but don’t want to take the burden of maintaining a highly available publication point. By using this service, it will be possible for our members with delegated RPKI to publish their signed RPKI objects in the RIPE NCC repositories (RRDP and rsync) instead of maintaining their own. Following a discussion with the Executive Board in our meeting last June, we would like to ask our community for input on the requirements for this service. The service was originally designed to allow all objects to be published in our repositories, regardless of whether the associated resources are part of the RIPE NCC or another RIR, and this is how we would like to proceed. However, it has been argued that there should be a restriction in this service so that it allows only RIPE NCC resources to be published and not resources belonging to a different RIR. If you are potential user of this service, what are your expectations for its functionality? Do you want to be able to publish all your objects in RIPE NCC repositories, regardless of whether they are from the RIPE NCC or not? Or will you publish each object in the corresponding RIR repositories? Please note that we are only talking about publication. The objects out of region will be signed with their own parent certificate. If you are a developer of one of the Relying Party softwares, will the presence or absence of such a restriction impact your software package in any way? Do you expect the need to make changes, depending on the direction this takes? To make informed decisions on how we should progress with Publish in Parent, we need input from potential users of the service. Please reply with your feedback until 14 October so we can incorporate it in our planning and inform you about our progress at RIPE 85. Dear colleagues, We have now published the quarterly planning for Q4 2022 for RPKI: https://www.ripe.net/manage-ips-and-asns/resource-management/rpki/rpki-plan… We are continuing with the activities started earlier this year such as piloting ASPA support and creating multiple parallel internal test environments for RPKI. We will notify the list when we have more updates on our work items. The goal of our quarterly planning is to communicate the work we’re doing for the coming months, get your input and start a discussion on other developments we should work on. Inconsistent repository state for rrdp.ripe.net

Dear colleagues, Yesterday, 19 September 2022, between 14:36 and 15:08 clients may have observed an inconsistent state of rrdp.ripe.net. After becoming aware of a potential issue, we mitigated the problem by switching to our secondary RRDP infrastructure before starting our investigation. During the incident, the RRDP repository https://rrdp.ripe.net/notification.xml referred to files that were not available. Out of over 14.5k requests (excluding traffic after failover), 5289 requests resulted in a 404 response. According to our logs and external monitoring, the rsync repository rsync://rpki.ripe.net was fully available during this period, although the service may have been slower than usual due to a high IO load. The trigger of this incident was an automatic failover to a backup publication server, where the primary server recovered in a matter of seconds, which resulted in an automatic switch back. From our logs, we observed that HTTP Keep-Alive kept the CDN connected to the backup server for notification.xml and new connections for snapshot and delta files were made to the primary server. We recognize that this is a similar outage report as the one from 12 September [1], and will continue with fixing these race conditions in our infrastructure. Call for Working Group Participation: MANRS+

Hi, MANRS is looking for volunteers to join a new working group to explore the idea of creating a second, elevated tier of MANRS participation for organizations that comply with more stringent requirements and auditing. We’re calling this MANRS+ at the moment, though that’s only a working title. MANRS has traditionally been focused on peer-to-peer relationships, but we believe generating customer demand could be a powerful driving force for better routing security. If we can enhance the business case, customers will demand better routing security of their network connectivity providers and providers will ensure they’re following best practices and staying in compliance with the MANRS actions that stop routing security incidents. Dear colleagues, This morning, 12 September 2022, during scheduled maintenance, the state of rrdp.ripe.net was inconsistent between 09:35 and 09:50 UTC. After becoming aware of a potential issue, we switched to secondary RRDP infrastructure before starting our investigation, mitigating the problem. During the incident, the RRDP repository https://rrdp.ripe.net/notification.xml referred to files that were not available, and 3480 requests resulted in a 404 response out of more than 10.97k requests (lower bound, excludes traffic after failover). According to our logs and external monitoring, the rsync service at rsync://rpki.ripe.net was fully available during this period. The alert we received indicated that notification.xml was missing while the delta/snapshot files were unavailable, which delayed our response to the incident. As an immediate action, we have already started making necessary changes to improve our alerting. We will continue investigating the root cause and focus on possible race conditions during the shutdown of the publication server (which could have happened during patching).
