Changes to the RRDP repository

Dear colleagues, Over the past months, we have been working on the RIPE NCC RPKI repositories. We have an update to the RRDP repository that we plan to deploy on 9 November. This will create a regular RRDP event (a session change) but will have no other externally visible impact. We want to share some of the improvements this change has to offer and highlight two areas in particular. First, we have improved the publication server software [0]. The current publication server uses an embedded NoSQL/schemaless database. We have changed the project to use PostgreSQL instead, which allows us to move several integrity checks to the publication server’s database. Second, we have changed how the publication server is deployed, which is part of our work to move components of our infrastructure on-premise. Initially, we will run two independent instances, with separate database servers and data centres, with each instance receiving all objects in the repository. We aim to keep this simple at an initial stage, closely monitor how the environment behaves, and expand later if we need to. Because the RRDP session differs between the instances, one instance is (and can be) active at each moment in time. This allows us to swap them out during an upgrade and allows us to fall back to the second one if any issue is being detected. Both instances are behind a load-balancer, which is the origin for the Content Delivery Network (CDN) that we use. By using a CDN, we (a) reduce the latency from various geographical locations, (b) protect ourselves from network glitches, and (c) reduce the bandwidth peak after a session change that would interfere with other services on the RIPE NCC network (for example during a deployment). Too large AS-sets

Colleagues, I'd like to hear how you others deal with those peers, whose AS-sets expands to way too large prefix-lists and/or as-paths. There are some networks that only ever add members to their AS-sets, but never remove. I have some deep frustration at (automatically) configuring our routers with prefix-lists or as-path filters that are magnitude or two as big as the specific peer's real advertised route count. Modern router platforms can quite easily handle large configs, but gigantic as-path filters seem to cause unnecessary increase in commit times at least in our JunOS platforms. The penalty feels higher than the reward. After all, if the peer's AS-set expands to cover big portion of the entire ASN space, I'm begin to ponder whether it would make more sense to drop IRR based as-path filtering altogether for those peers and use e.g. some sort of generalized peerlock filter? Are there any others as frustrated as I am and how have you solved this issue? I will appreciate constructive feedback. -Antti

Add BGPsec support to Hosted RPKI?

Dear all, [ TL;DR: What does the working group think about supporting an extension to the RPKI Dashboard to enable publication of BGPsec certs? ] At the moment the hosted "RPKI Dashboard" at https://my.ripe.net/#/rpki, only permits Resource Holders to create RPKI objects of one specific type: ROAs. However, a wider range of RPKI cryptographic product types also exists, for example: BGPsec Router Certificates [RFC 8209]. BGPsec is a RPKI-based technology which enables network operators to transitively validate whether a given BGP UPDATE - indeed - passed through the Autonomous Systems listed in the path. One way to think of BGPsec is as an ECDSA protected network of channels between a receiving EBGP node; and one (or many) routers in the BGP route's Origin AS. I think BGPsec can be useful to protect "private peering" at large scale, and another use case is to increase confidence in routing information distributed via IXP Route/Blackhole Servers. Right now, routing protocol researchers and network operators wishing to publish BGPsec Router Keys, also have to learn how to master "Delegated RPKI": a deployment model with a steep learning curve. I think there are benefits to the community if RIPE NCC appends an activity to the "RPKI Planning and Roadmap" to implement procedures to sign and publish BGPsec Router Keys via a PKCS#10 / PKCS#7 exchange, callable via both API and dashboard WebUI.
