Author: John Bender (JHB42-RIPE)
Speakers: John Bender and Don Bowman
Topic: Implementing Global Network Mobility using BGP-4
Abstract:
Traditional approaches to IP mobility target host mobility,
rather than mobile networks per se. Providing internet access on
mobile platforms where hosts (which may number in the hundreds) remain
relatively stationary with regards to the platform presents a set of
problems that has not been addressed by traditional IP mobility
solutions. This presentation describes a technique that allows
intercontinental mobility of networks aboard aircraft that does not
require either any modifications to the TCP/IP protocol stacks of the
hosts on board the aircraft, or interaction from the end-user of this
device. Mobility is accomplished by means of selective advertising
and withdrawing prefixes at satellite earth stations as aircraft
transit the globe. We expect that this topic will be of interest to
all service providers as our actions impact the global routing table.

(Rene Wilhelm)
A new interface to data collected by RIS project. That allows
IP address matching to AS number.
Questions:
"Are withdrawals and updates are counted?" RIB data is used.
"All AS are listed?" Yes
"How do you handle AS-set?" It is recorded and it's listed as
different objects.
* IGP Fast Convergence in a ISP Backbone
(Clarence Filsfils)
This case study is about the convergence of IS-IS protocol and puts
forward some suggestions on how to get a better convergence time.
Questions:
"Was there propagation delay?" Comeback on few slides. In the study
case, we do not have too many hops because of that you do not have
much propagation delay.
"Which one is prioritized?" /32 is first converged, and then the rest.
* Operator Experience from IS-IS Convergence Tuning
(Henrik Villfoer)
This study is done on the TeliaSonera network. Motivation for such a
study is to get a fast convergence time, around 1 sec, for time
sensitive
new IP services and find the limits of the protocol, IS-IS. Mostly
Cisco products are used.
Questions&Comments:
"How many LSPs were measured after tunning?" More than 100 LSPs.
Clarence Filsfils proposed to tune the process-max-time since it should
give smaller maximum flooding delays (among other things).
There was a comment from audience about the convergence measurement
which
was done by TeliaSonera:
"It would be more interesting if there would be more info about
flooding
loops."
Henrik Villfoer: We actually only measure the number of test packets
lost.
Systematically inspecting the TTL would tell us if we had transient
loops.
I could do naught but agree but complemented with the information that
manual
inspection of a number of cases has shown that loops do exist but are
very
short lived and uncommon.
* IP Fast Convergence Project
(Nicolas Dubois / Benoit Fondeviole)
France Telecom R&D did this study to how to improve IP convergence
in various protocols. Also did study how to solve the problems
they had in L2TP tunnels, and MPLS/VPN.
Questions:
"What do you mean by L2TP is used for INTERNET aggregation?"
"When you say you have convergence problems on MPLS/VPN to which kind
of
problems do you refer?" BGP next-hopt change and NTP.
"How does one update make such a change on BGP convergence?" Update
to change the FIB.
* AOB
There is no other business.

It is *now* high time to check whether you see the following
pilot prefixes:
85.192/16, 85.255.248/21,
86.192/16, 86.255.248/21,
87.192/16, 87.255.248/21,
88.192/16, 88.255.248/21.
If you do not see all of these prefixes it is extremely likely that you
will have a connectivity problem shortly. We also suggest that you
check any packet filters you may be responsible for.
Regards
Daniel Karrenberg

Notes:
This address space has been allocated by the IANA on April 4th 2003,
almost a month ago. The fact has been widely announced then.
Routing decisions are fully within the responsibility of the network
operators. The IANA and the RIRs will only announce which parts of the
address space are currently in use. They have no authority whatsoever
over routing decisions taken by you and other network operators.
More details about this pilot service of the RIPE NCC can be found at
http://www.ripe.net/ripe/draft-documents/deboganising-draft.html .
A visibility comparison of the pilot prefixes with some production
prefixes can be found at http://www.ris.ripe.net/debogon/debogon.html .
Those interested in history, see http://www.ris.ripe.net/debogon/ .
Pingable targets exist in all pilot prefixes at
t{85,86,87,88}-{16,21}.rrc03.ripe.net , i.e. the target within
the /21 pilot prefix of 85/8 is t85-21.rrc03.ripe.net .
For testing purposes it is possible to do ping and traceroute
originating within the pilot prefixes via
http://www.ris.ripe.net/cgi-bin/debogon.cgi .
Please use this with prudence.

RIPE-229 RIPE Routing-WG Recommendations for Coordinated Route-flap Damping Parameters - Errors/Mistakes?
by Zvezdelin Vladov 27 Apr '04
by Zvezdelin Vladov 27 Apr '04
27 Apr '04
Dear All,
I would like to point to you a major mistake throughout this recomendation
that might lead to unexpected results, if exactly following the proposed
parameters
in the RIPE-229.
Here they are:
1. At A3.1.1 it is said:
"A.3.1.1 For /24s
Parameters used are "set dampening 15 820 3000 30"
1st flap 1000 decay to 966, 982 at update
2nd flap 1966 decay to 1894, 1926 at update
3rd flap 2894 decay to 2787, 2846 at update
4th flap 3280 decay to 3165, 3226 at update"
Although the comment futher states:
"Maximum possible penalty is 3280 as defined by the flap parameters, so
the penalty at the 4th flap was only incremented from 2787 to 3280, not
3787 as might have been expected. At the 4th flap the prefix was marked as
being suppressed for 59 minutes when the update message was received. If
the update after the 4th flap was not received within 4 minutes and 20
seconds, the penalty dropped below 3000, and the prefix was not
suppressed."
Please note the first line after the A.3.1.1, it is said:
"set dampening 15 820 3000 30"
And actually it is spoken of dampening parameters such as:
"set dampening 30 820 3000 60"
Please note the "59 minutes" on the 4th row from the last comment, counting
from above to the bootom of the paragpraph.
Configuring "15 820 3000 30" gives max penalty 3280, max suppresion
time 30 minutes, instead of 60, which is in contradiction with the
recomendations made at section 2. of the document.
2.2 Description of recommended damping parameter:
Basically the recommended values do the following with harsher treatment
for /24 and longer prefixes:
* don't start damping until the 4th flap
* /24 and longer prefixes: max=min outage 60 minutes
2. On the example configs actually given at http://www.golden-networks.net
for the Cisco IOS config, the parameters for /24 are:
"set dampening 30 820 3000 60", i.e. the correct values are in the
config.
So, I suggest correcting this document.
One more suggestion is to note the standard dampening parameters for
Cisco and Juniper,
and especially the different penalty assigment policy - Cisco - on
withdraw only, Juniper
on withdraw AND readvertisement.

Dear Colleagues,
[apologies for duplicate postings]
As a service to its members the RIPE NCC offers the
"Routing Registry Training Course".
The main objective of the "Routing Registry Training Course" is to
familiarise the LIRs with the features of the Routing Registry, while
introducing the relevant tools and services of the RIPE NCC.
The course also offers practical exercises.
OVERVIEW OF TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE:
- Routing Registry as a part of the RIPE Whois Database
and the Internet Routing Registry (IRR)
- Specifying routing policies using (RPSL)
Routing Policy Specification Language and the RtConfig tool
- IRRToolSet
- Routing Information Service (RIS)
- Routing Registry Consistency Check Project
Please note that this is an advanced course. It will:
- NOT teach the basics of routing
- NOT teach the basics of RIPE Database operations,
- NOT describe how to receive Internet resources from the RIPE NCC
- NOT describe how to operate a Local Internet Registry (LIR)
The target audience of the course are technical staff of LIRs: e.g.
network operators, engineers etc. This course is not intended for
administrative or management staff (e.g. Hostmasters) .
It is assumed that all attendees will be familiar with
Border Gateway Protocol routing and with the RIPE Database
(i.e. creating/modifying objects).
This course is based on interactive exercises in a local network set-up.
Please bring your laptops equipped with the following:
- A working Ethernet card,
- Three meters of Ethernet cable,
- A secure connection client,
- A web browser.
Please be prepared to share your laptop (or at least allow another
attendee to "look over your shoulder") if necessary.
The Routing Registry Training Course is conducted in the English language
and is free of charge, since it is covered by the membership fee.
More information about the Routing Registry Training Course can be found
at: http://www.ripe.net/training/rr/
