I talked with Shane, I think we can shutdown abcoude. New servers will be online so soon. During that time I think, we can survive without DB backup. I suggest you to ignore abcoude related check tonight and I will do last check tomorrow. Then, you can turn abcoude off. I think abcoude did a quite good job for RIS for a long time. BGPlay server crashing

Hi Arife, I caught the BGPlay server on halfweg down today (it had been down since this morning). Since we don't have a reproducible crash, I modified the script to log all errors, so the next time it crashes I can catch the reason and hopefully fix the problem. The error logs are saved to ~risops/bin/bgplay/error.log . If you restart the server they will be overwritten, so please make a backup of the logs and/or mail them to me if you do restart it. One of those rare occasions where someone from Nanog uses RIS, but now he got confused by the vast number of updates coming to RIS from RIPE NCC (AS3333) over the weekend. Meanwhile, I found another, probably related, issue which I'm again not sure if people (ris ops ?) know about and whether it's on SED or OPS to check: RIS DB insertion for rrc00 is running 3+ days behind: http://www.ris.ripe.net/cgi-bin/rrcstatus.cgi ---> rrc00 - last DB insertion - 2005-11-04 19:45:00 A quick look on halfweg showed the rrc00 update files (one every five minutes) which usually were 10-30 kilobyte had grown to order(8 MB) from friday evening to sunday evening. That's one thing, but what I think the RIPE community (operators) would really like is for the RIS service to be expanded with tools we consider best, as was done with BGPlay. Operators don't have time to investigate the work done by researchers in various universities, they need hands on tools working on the full set of RIS data. With the large number of peers RIS has now, any query via the RIS cgis yields an overwhelming amount of data. RIS could sure do with some intermediate, higher level, overview of the results. Hi all, Arife and I just sat through a bof on BGP analysis where a few tools using RIS and/or RV data were presented. I've no idea how useful those tools actually are but if they are only presented at NANOG, I doubt that many people in the RIPE region will hear that tehy are available, let alone test drive them. Random idea: shouldn't we make a page on the ris website with links to all the tools that we know of. On the page, we can also put a bit of text inviting people to send us links if they develop tools and tell them that we'd be happy to announce new entries to the RIPE mailing lists. This will give the developpers more exposure for their tools and make it easier for the community to find all tools based on the RIS. At the same time, I think http://www.ripe.net/projects/ris/docs/analysis.html Deserves an entry in the left column. Hi guys, There will be 5-10 mins status update at Routing-WG, RIPE51. Presentation will roughly contain the following main points: - RIS: What is it? Contact info - Stats (if we can find some interesting stats) - RIS Performance study - Central server trouble keeping up with RRC - Analysis check for memory, CPU, and disk I/O - Result, disk is bottleneck - Solution: add disks -> even better, split DBs across servers - Getting away from central server design - Add more CPU and Disk. - What are user needs? - Fast applications - Less time lag - More data in DB - Feedback from users.
