NOTE - NOTE - NOTE - NOTE - NOTE - NOTE - NOTE - NOTE - NOTE - NOTE Travel & Hotel Information General Information about Italy and Milan * Weather Milan is located in the Northern part of Italy, about one and half hour drive from the Alps, in the Padana plains. January in Milan might be cold (for our standards), which means the highs are between 0C and 10C (between 30F and 50F) and the lows are around or below freezing. It can be very foggy, maybe rainy, but there aren't many chances for snow. Bring warm shoes anyway. * Money and Banks The local currency is the Italian Lira, whose rate of exchange as of November 1st with $US is roughly $1 = 1,750 ITL and with the ECU is ECU1 = 1,950 ITL. Money can be changed at banks (all morning long and for one hour in the afternoon between 15:15 and 16:15) and exchange bureaus (all day long and at night too in the downtown area). Some stores will accept foreign currency as well. Most automatic teller machines are connected on the CIRRUS, VISA, EUROCHEQUE, MASTERCARD networks. A BankAmericard office is also available in the city center. * Telephones Telephones work with change (fewer and fewer), phone cards (prepaid phone cards are sold at bars, news stands, and wherever there is a sign reading "schede telefoniche"), and some also with credit cards. Local calls in Milan requires at least 200 ITL and additional money the longer you call (there is no such thing as flat rate for local calls). International calls are placed by dialing 00 - country code - area code - number. Country code for Italy is ++39 Area code for Milan is 2. * Shopping and Restaurants Prices you see at shops or restaurants are all inclusive, "what you see is what you pay". Tips in bars and restaurants are not expected, although welcome, service is accounted for explicitly (like in restaurants) or implicitly (like in bars), so tipping is totally up to the customers' please. Downtown stores sell tax free for foreigners, for purchases above a certain threshold. Ask at the store before paying for your purchases. * Theathres, Cinemas, and Museums Few cinemas feature undubbed movies, all theathre shows are in Italian. Tickets can be purchased directly at the theathre. Prices range between 30,000 IT. Lira and 160,000 depending on the show and theathre. Some accept credit cards, cash is always welcome. If you are interested in La Scala performances, please visit their web site at http://lascala.milano.it for program and ticketing information. Museums are usually open from 9am to 5pm (with few exceptions, e.g., Leonardo's Last Supper, mornings only) five days a week, and often 9am to 1 pm on Sunday, the closing day varies for the various institutions. * Power Power voltage is 220V, sockets are (of course) different from the rest of the world, international adaptors will work and are available at electrical appliances store. Phone sockets may be like American's or the old three pronged type. * Tourist Information A wealth of information can be found at http://www.city.net/countries/italy/milan/ The Tourist Information office (APT) in in Duomo Square, under the fascist style white marble arcade at the Duomo's right, when facing it.
