Call for input on all virtual RIPE 81
At the meeting with RIPE Working group chairs on 20 May we discussed my original plan to decide on RIPE 81 as soon as the new RIPE Chair is appointed, but no later than the end of June. The consensus following the discussion the topic was that it would be unreasonable to expect the next RIPE Chair and vice-Chair to be able to take this decision just after the appointment. The PC and WG Chairs will use the upcoming weeks to discuss this, and your input is highly appreciated. The RIPE NCC Executive board meets on 16 June, and I would like to make the decision already at that time. While it is a decision on the location of a RIPE meeting is made by the RIPE Chair together with the RIPE NCC, it is also a responsibility of the RIPE NCC MD and Executive board to take the safety and employees arranging the meeting into account. Please let me know your thoughts by Friday, 12 June. Sincerely, Hans Petter Holen RIPE ad-interim Chair

If the decision is for another all-virtual RIPE meeting, I'ld appreciate it if the otherwise excellent service provider were pressed to make their service available over IPv6. Hans, all, congratulations to the RIPE NCC and all involved in the RIPE community on hosting RIPE 80 virtually. It seemed like a success overall and certainly to me. I think the prudent decision for any meeting for the rest of 2020 is to just bite the bullet, remove the doubt and go virtual again. Then reassess for 2021. Lastly, with all due respect to Niall and no actual knowledge of Zoom's network: I imagine Zoom is undergoing unprecedented hockey-stick growth after seemingly becoming the defacto virtual communications platform in our new Covid-19 world. Speaking with my network engineer hat on, please don't badger them right now with "you must support IPv6". Let's put it on the list for 2021, they have enough on their plates right now. And I say this as a long-time strong and vocal IPv6 advocate. - Barry Niall O'Reilly wrote on 28/05/2020 16:07:

Fair enough, Barry. Badgering them with "you must support IPv6" wasn't what I had in mind. If they were asked, and replied that they had it on their roadmap for 2021, I wouldn't complain. /Niall

They have servers in Europe, at least that is what I see ik meetings overhere. As far as I understand the host/organiser can specify which data center (and thus where) to use.. jaap

The RIPE meeting is usually quite good for remote-attendance options, but since everyone was remote for '80, the setup was *excellent*. Thank you for that. It was great to be able to relay questions through the chairs into sessions but I would love to see the questioner and also encourage conversation after some of the presentations. Please consider a setup to allow a questioner to ask the question themselves via video link as well as retaining the relay option? I'd be happy to participate in a community test of such a system. We must also be slightly aware that even if it is possible for '81 to have a host location and some physically present people, it will not be possible for delegates in some territories to attend because of local viral control measures. The same might be true for '82, and '83 and so on, though hopefully less. Please consider what a hybrid format with a lot of people in one place and a lot of people remote could be like. Again the RIPE NCC ops and meeting teams, and also the RIPE WG collective/PC all demonstrated the gold standard in what a community meeting looks like during '80 - thanks to them. Andy

I like this observation. It helps put a human face on a question and to feel more like you're in the middle of a community working together to have different voices phrase different questions, rather than having a single voice relay them from typed text. I think it was a nice feature of RIPE 80 that people didn't have to feel self-conscious or intimidated by the idea of speaking in front of a crowd of people, though, as I have often heard is the case during sessions at in-person meetings. Perhaps there is an advantage in having both options available, if it can be done in a streamlined way without too much extra work for session moderators. For what it's worth I also really like seeing people in their home environment on camera. It also adds to the informality and makes events feel more human. Every time a rogue cat or child makes a cameo appearance in a business meeting, my day gets a little bit better. Joe
