I hope this query is a reasonable use of this list. I have been asked to come up with a summary of the use of high speed (which means more than E3 - 34Mbit/s in this context) in Europe. The query really means off campus, rather than FDDI and Fast Ethernet within an organization. I have a reasonable idea of the picture within the UK (SuperJANET, and the various MAN initiatives), but my picture across Europe is much more patchy. There are a few pointers that I have been given, and I've just emailed off some specific queries to some folk (some of whom are also on this list, so please forgive me for pestering you with a similar query).
So, please, if you know of any communication at these speeds that is outside the "local area", please drop me an email. I would very much appreciate a specific references that I can quote (URL to something pretty and informative would be good). Anything outside the local area qualifies, whether it is a few miles across a city, a national initiative, a trans-european link, or even an international link. However, I really would appreciate it if you could make the destinction between those things that are actually shifting bits now, and those that are merely figments on a proposal.
I will of course, summarise to the list.
Denis.
Denis, In relation to our planning, ie that of DANTE and the NRNs participating in TEN-34, I recently sent out a simple questionnaire (copy below) concerning the use of 155 Mbit/s services. I have had nine responses so far but I hesitate to pass them on without seeking the agreement of my informants (data provided for one purpose should not be used for other purposes etc - even if it is not personal). Can you please let me know a bit more about the purpose of your own questions? I know how difficult it is to get hold of reliable information and I would like to share what we have both got as long as this is legitimate. Best wishes, Howard --------------------------------- 1. Do you already have any 155 Mbit/s links in service? Yes/no If yes, how many organisations/sites are connected? Skip to question 4 2. Do you have any 155 Mbit/s links in use for testing purposes? Yes/no If yes, when do you expect to start (national) services based on such links? Skip to question 4 3. Do you have any plans to install (national) 155 Mbit/s links for testing or for operational services? Yes/no If yes, when do you expect the first installations to be made? 4. Given the plans for TEN-34, at what date would you (realistically) like to see an international (European) 155 Mbit/s service in place? 5. Can you give us a pointer to any document (or Web page etc) which briefly describes your activities/plans/strategy in relation to 155 Mbit/s services? Since the answers to the questions should be easy to provide, could you please respond before (or, at the latest, at) next Tuesday's SG meeting. If there is any information you wish to add, you are of course welcome to do so. end
