To Prague Meeting Attendees: At Prague there will be a meeting of the group on relations between the Research, Academic, and Educational nets and the Com- mercial nets (the RAEC group). I will have a document on some current issues between these nets, including an overview of network traffic types, for discussion at that meeting. I urge everyone interested in these topics to attend. Some of you may be interested in this report. -- Jill Abstract of Trip Report: Internet Engineering Task Force Jill Foster - Newcastle University, UK Chairman: RARE Information Services and User Support Working Group IETF - Washington: Nov 16-20, 1992 This report is about 1000 lines long - but is structured to allow you to skip over bits not of interest to you. My main reasons for attending (thanks to funding from RARE) were to: o represent RARE Information Services and User Support Working Group (which I chair) [RARE is the Association of European Research Networks] o join in the User Services and associated WG sessions. o co-chair a WG session on networked information retrieval tools. o co-chair a BOF session on network training materials. This informal report is in note form and deals mainly with the areas of User Support, Network Training and Networked Information Retrieval, although reports of the plenary sessions are also included. Dear Colleagues, a happy and successfull 1993 to you all! In 1992 it has happened more than once that an unsuspecting person sent a message which was intended for the RIPE chairpeople or the NCC to this whole list. Therefore we have decided that the name of the list for 1993 (and thereafter, funding permitting :-) shall be ripe-list(a)ripe.net and ripe(a)ripe.net will henceforth point to the duty mail person at the NCC. Any messages recieved here wich are clearly intended for the list will be forwarded of course. According to Internet custom the address for administrative requests concering the list is: ripe-list-request(a)ripe.net. The list is still unmoderated and we still encourage you to keep the volume of messages on this general list to a minimum by using more specific mailing lists where appropriate. RIPE DNS Hostcount December 1992

Friends, First of all, best wishes for 1993 once more. Below the last hostcount for 1992. Not much comments, just that CS and FI went down a bit, probably due to unreachable nameservers. Overall a nice increase of 12,500 to over 284,000. We have some catching up to do to reach 300,000 at the next RIPE meeting. Again the entire history is appended below, and all the output files can be fetched again from ftp.ripe.net:ripe/hostcount Before I forget, anyone who wishes to have their hotel for the next RIPE meeting to be reserved by the people in Prague, should send in the registration form before the end of this week. Olivier, Yes, CA*NET and the CERN traffic to NSFNET were still on the T1 in November. We did register some data losses with the T3 traffic-by-network data in early November, but I suspect that most of the differences that you noted were due to the fact that much of the international traffic did not cross the T3 backbone. Even though the Country report is explicitly labelled as representing only the T3 traffic, I can understand the likelihood of misinterpretation and have removed the report from nic.merit.edu. The upcoming December report should be complete, and I don't expect any problems. If you find something that doesn't make sense, please let me know, and we'll try to track it down.
