Dear all, Apologies for this wide distribution but I think it is important enough. This is a reminder that coming Monday the 21st of November, the second and last step of the RIPE database transition will take place. This transition is the transition from network number objects that hold all policy information, to route objects that contain all this information. For more detailed info on what exactly will change and how, please read ripe-123 which is available as: ftp://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/docs/ripe-123.{txt|ps} Especially section 5 explains forthe various RIPE database user groups what is going to change. -Marten

in-addr.arpa

Up till a week ago I would send in my in-addr.arpa requests to internic.net. They are now telling me they don't handle it anymore. How do other sites handles in-addr.arpa registrations? Thanks, Hank

Phil: I've only got partial data to work with, but the growth rate of the US domain is greater than that of the UK domain, even with most of the registrations going into the COM and other domains instead. Tony: You probably would not know, but this press release coincides with the third anniversary of the launch of the JANET IP service in November 1991, incredible though that recent date may seem. The growth of the Internet may seem less spectacular in western Europe than elsewhere, so I thought I'd mention the above fact, and comment (from memory) that the .uk and the .de domains are the top two country domains in terms of hostcount ... followed by substantial other contributions from nearby. ... and most growing rapidly, of course. (I never tire of pointing out that .uk is far bigger than .us ... :-) .uk has just burst through the 200,000 barrier, with of course a substantial number being connected to other (e.g. commercial) IP networks. 200k represents more than 10% more than .de, and based on about two thirds the population. Also, 50+ JANET customers are connected at speeds of 25mbps and more, with upgrades for others being imminient, so there are a fair few bits flying around.
