Dear Colleagues, [ Apologies for duplicate mails ] It is our pleasure to open registration for the 35th RIPE meeting, which will be held from 22 - 25 February 2000 at: Krasnapolsky Hotel, Damsquare, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. More information about this meeting can be found on this page: http://www.ripe.net/meetings/ripe/ripe-35/index.html On-site registration will open on Tuesday 22nd February. Please note the following: - To avoid wait queues at the registration desk on-site we encourage pre-payment by credit card. The registration fee for this meeting is EUR 280.00 (this includes refreshments and lunches) and the dinner fee is EUR 65.00. However, if payment is received before 11th February 2000 the pre-payment cut-off date, you will receive a pre-registration discount of EUR 50.00. Therefore, the fee for attendees paying before the cut-off date is EUR 230.00 for the meeting and 65.00 EUR for the RIPE dinner event. Confirmation of Registration: For your convenience we have prepared a fax form for sending your credit card number. RIPE Region Hostcount for November 1999

Dear All, below is the hostcount for November 1999. The table shows an increase since last month of over 190,000 (or 1.9%) to a total of around 10,215,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The fr domain shows the highest increase for November with approximately 540,000 (!) hosts more than in October. Dear All, below is the hostcount for October 1999. The table shows an increase since last month of over 470,000 (or 4.9%) to a total of more than 10,000,000 (cheer!) hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The -it- domain shows the highest increase for October with approximately 180,000 hosts more than in September. Background information and more statistics are available at http://www.ripe.net/statistics/hostcount/ - Brief Notes on this Hostcount - We apologise for the delay in publication of the hostcount this month. Delays are becoming increasingly frequent due to the sheer size of the zones meaning that resource requirments are extremely large for some TLDs. And again, the exceptionally large raise this month can only be partially attributed to the lateness of publication, since most of the TLD data was collected at the usual time. Please remember that last month, no data could be published for -uk- or -be- which probably also influences the count for this month positively (though by no means decisively). Announcement: 3 new ICANN board members appointed

Dear friends of RIPE, The address council of the Address Supporting Organisation of ICANN has today performed its first important task. Following the regional open calls for nominations, three members for the ICANN board has been selected Rob Blokzijl (RIPE NCC region) for a 3 years term Pindar Wong (APNIC region) for a 2 years term Ken Fockler (ARIN region) for a 1 year term The terms may be reconsidered at the upcoming meeting in Los Angeles, but for formal reasons we had to decide on the terms without having time to meet or consult with the candidates. It is worth noting that the Address Council has been under enormous pressure to come up with the candidates by today at latest. According to the ICANN bylaws, the current ICANN board has to be informed of the new board members 7 days before the new board members can take their seat. We were therefor facing two choices: rush the process as much as possible, an almost impossible task with members of the address council from Japan, China, Korea, Austria, France, Norway, USA and Chile in order to enable our board members to take seat before the Los Angeles board meeting. Or we could have waited, thus taken away our communities voices on the upcoming board meeting. We did however manage to select one candidate from each region regionally, and then had a phone meeting earlier on today to confirm the selections. We managed to establish a quorum (5 out of 9 present, and more than 2 out of 3 regions represented) and all votes were unanimous. Wish them good luck, As they may need it, to make sure ICANN becomes what it needs to be to ensure active development of the Internet. RIPE NCC Executive Board Announces Axel Pawlik as Managing Director

[apologies for duplicates.] Dear Colleagues, As you are aware, Daniel Karrenberg has stepped down from his position as General Manager of the RIPE NCC. Following his announcement the RIPE NCC Executive board has employed a great deal of effort to find a suitable replacement for this position. The RIPE NCC Executive Board is happy to announce Axel Pawlik as the new Managing Director of the RIPE NCC. Axel has been formally introduced to the participants at the recent AGM'99 meeting held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The RIPE NCC welcomes Axel and wishes him all the success in his new function. To help Axel get up to speed as quickly as possible, not only will he be assisted by the Executive Board, but also by Daniel and the staff. To provide you with some background information about Axel, please find below, the official news release announcing the appointment of Axel Pawlik as Managing Director of the RIPE NCC. Kind Regards, Paul Rendek Communications Officer ===== RIPE NCC Executive Board Announces Axel Pawlik as Managing Director Amsterdam, The Netherlands -- 19 October 1999 -- The RIPE NCC (Reseaux IP Europeens Network Co-ordination Centre) Executive Board today announced the appointment of Axel Pawlik as Managing Director of the RIPE NCC Association, effective 16 October 1999. Mr. Pawlik succeeds Daniel Karrenberg who served as General Manager since the establishment of the organisation in 1992. Employed at the University of Dortmund in Germany from 1985 to 1992, Axel Pawlik contributed to the establishment of UNIX networking as a publicly available service in Germany through the University of Dortmund. This institution introduced Internet access services to the business community and general public. During the period 1987-1991, Mr. Pawlik also served as a member of the board of the German Unix Users Group (GUUG). Understanding the demand for a commercial operation to provide Internet services, Mr. Pawlik founded EUnet Deutschland GmbH in 1992 and commercialised the operation. Under his leadership EUnet Deutschland GmbH became the market leader in Germany and one of the strongest EUnet networks in Europe. Mr. Pawlik was actively involved in the international operations of EUnet and the Internet community and held a series of executive positions within EUnet, initially as a member and eventually Vice-Chairman of the EUnet Executive Committee from 1988-1991. In his position as Vice-Chairman he lead the establishment of EUnet Ireland Ltd, which aimed to consolidate the host of national EUnet networks throughout Europe. Here he served as EUnet Ltd. Chairman of the Board from 1994 to 1995. Mr. Pawlik graduated from the University of Dortmund in 1983 with a Masters Degree in Computer Science. Since 1997 he lived with his family in North-west Ireland enjoying the clean air and rural lifestyle. Dear All, below is the hostcount for September 1999. The table shows an increase since last month of over 380,000 (or 4.2%) to a total of over 9,500,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The it domain shows the highest increase for September with approximately 130,000 hosts more than in August. Background information and more statistics are available at http://www.ripe.net/statistics/hostcount/ - Brief Notes on this Hostcount - We apologise for the (as usual, unavoidable) delay in publication of the hostcount this month, caused mainly by operational problems with the de zone. No data file could be acquired for the following TLD's: uk - collection problem be - transfer problem cf, ne - axfr block at top level Last month's data was used for uk and be so as to keep the overall figure somewhat consistent with previous months. Despite the problems described, the total hosts and zones counted rose quite sharply.
