Speakers should indicate that their submission is for a keynote in their abstracts. Speaker must submit slides for a Keynote Presentation. General Session Talk: A General Session presentation should be on a topic of interest to the general NANOG audience, and may be up to 30-minutes long (including time for Q&A). Speakers must submit slides for a General Session presentation. General Session Panel: Panels are 60-90-minute discussion sessions between a moderator and a team of panelists. The panel moderator should submit an abstract on the panel topic, a list of panelists, and how the panel will be organized. Panel selection will be based on the importance, originality, focus and timeliness of the topic, expertise of proposed panelists, as well as the potential for informative and controversial discussion. After acceptance the panel leader will be given the option to invite panel authors to submit their presentations to the NANOG program Committee for review. Until then authors should not submit their individual presentations for the panel. Tracks: Tracks are 90-minute informal agenda blocks on topics, which are of interest to a portion of the NANOG community. The 90-minute block can be subdivided into a number of smaller, highly related presentations, panels or open discussion. A moderator coordinates content within the 90-minute block of time, and must submit a detailed outline to the Program Committee, including sub-topics and presenters Peering ISP Security Tools Typically two tracks or three tracks will be run concurrently. Tutorials: Tutorials are 90-minute sessions. A presentation from the introductory through advanced level on all related topics, including: Disaster Recovery Planning Troubleshooting BGP Best Practices for Determining Traffic Matrices Options for Blackhole and Discard Routing BGP/MPLS Layer 3 VPNs Peering business and engineering basics A tutorial submission should include an abstract and slides. BOFs: BOFs (Birds of a Feather sessions) are informal sessions on topics, which are of interest to a portion of the NANOG community. BOFs may be held in the hallways, breakout areas or in an unscheduled tutorial room. Requests for scheduled BOFs will be take place on site at the meeting. A typical BOF session may include some structure or presentations, but usually is focused on community discussion and interaction. Frequent BOF topics include: R&D collaboration Hot-topics in the media The less structured nature of BOF sessions allows for the greatest flexibility from a timing perspective. Lightning Talks: A lightning talk is a very short presentation or speech by any attendee on any topic relevant to the NANOG audience. These are limited to ten minutes; this will be strictly enforced. If you have a topic that's timely, interesting, or even a crackpot idea you want to share, we encourage you to consider presenting it. The Program Committee will vote on all Lightning Talk submissions onsite at the meeting, and a submitter will be notified about his or her submission one day prior to the scheduled talk time. Submit your lightning talk proposal at http://pc.nanog.org starting June 2, 2013. Research Forum: Researchers are invited to present short (10-minute) summaries of their work for operator feedback. Topics include routing, network performance, statistical measurement and analysis, and protocol development and implementation. Studies presented may be works in progress. Researchers from academia, government, and industry are encouraged to present. The NANOG registration fee is waived for: - For General Session presentations, the registration fee will be waived for a maximum of one speaker. - For General Session panels, fees will be waived for one panel moderator and all panelists. - For Tracks, fees will be waived for one moderator. - For Research Forum presentations, fees will be waived for one speaker. - For Tutorials, fees will be waived for one instructor. *

DNS outage

[Apologies for duplicate emails] Dear colleagues, This morning, the RIPE NCC briefly experienced a problem on the ripe.net DNS servers. Operation of K-root and other public DNS services was not impacted at any time during this outage. At 11:45 UTC this morning, an error in the deployment script used to update the ripe.net zone caused a partial zone file to be activated. This caused the ripe.net DNS servers to return NX-domain responses for some valid hosts and/or subdomains in the ripe.net zone, which effectively rendered some of the RIPE NCC services unavailable during this period. DNS resolution for ripe.net was fully restored at 12:15 UTC. Caching of the erroneous responses may have caused reachability problems until 13:15 UTC. The error in the script has been identified and is only triggered in a specific corner case. This error will be corrected today. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. The (current proposed version) of the charter was discussed a bit in this list in last october. [news] RPKI and PI End Users Proposal - Feedback Requested

[Apologies for duplicate emails] Dear colleagues, Since the launch of the RIPE NCC resource certification (RPKI) system on 1 January 2011, more than 1,300 RIPE NCC members have requested a resource certificate. Together, they have created statements about BGP routing for over 3,000 prefixes, covering more than five /8 blocks. Currently, this system is only applicable to Provider Aggregatable (PA) address space held by RIPE NCC members. The functionality that we most commonly receive requests for is to make address space held by Provider Independent (PI) End Users eligible for certification. During the RIPE 65 Meeting in Amsterdam, there were discussions on this and the RIPE NCC Executive Board extensively deliberated the issue. Based on these discussions, the Executive Board now submits this proposal for consideration and discussion to you, the RIPE NCC membership and the RIPE community. One of the most important considerations when issuing a resource certificate is that it be given to the legitimate holder of the address space. This is fundamental to the reliability and trustworthiness of the system and to the goal of making our registry as robust as possible. To ensure that the resource certificate retains its authoritative value over time, it is important that the RIPE NCC periodically verifies the association between the resource and its holder. With our members, this is a straightforward process because we have direct contact with them at least once a year. Under current RIPE Policy, PI End Users who are not RIPE NCC members must have a contractual agreement with a sponsoring LIR (as detailed in ripe-452). Periodic verification of the resource holder could be handled by the sponsoring LIR. Also note that the RIPE NCC cannot enter into any contractual agreement with PI End Users, other than the "RIPE NCC Standard Service Agreement" (ripe-435). Therefore, the Executive Board proposes that PI End Users in the RIPE NCC service region who want to certify their resources be given both of the following two options: 1. Sign an agreement with their sponsoring LIR (a RIPE NCC member) to have the resources certified by the RIPE NCC via the sponsoring LIR. In this case, the sponsoring LIR would be responsible for periodically verifying that the PI End User is the legitimate holder of the resources. However, the RIPE NCC will in all cases be responsible for issuing the resource certificate and providing access to the RPKI management interface. Therefore, PI End Users should, at all times, be able to change from one sponsoring LIR to another while still retaining the same certificate for the resources that they hold. The cost associated with this option lies in building a framework in the LIR Portal to facilitate the process, some administrative overhead, and the additional burden on the RPKI infrastructure, that would not be funded by the direct beneficiary of the resource certification service. These costs would come out of the general RIPE NCC budget and would therefore be funded by all RIPE NCC members, however it is unlikely that this would have any direct impact on future membership fees. Alternatively a PI End User may choose to: 2. Become a RIPE NCC member, pay the full annual membership fee and receive a certificate directly through the RIPE NCC. The Executive Board feels that offering both of these options will result in relatively little impact on membership fees while offering all PI End Users the opportunity to certify their Internet number resources without being forced to become a member of the RIPE NCC. For the sake of completeness, we also present a third scenario discussed by the Executive Board that would involve giving PI End Users that have received resources through a sponsoring LIR the option to deal directly with the RIPE NCC without becoming a RIPE NCC member or needing to make contact with their sponsoring LIR. They could do this by authenticating the relevant INETNUM object using their MNTNER, and supplying additional information directly to the RIPE NCC (company registration papers, business address details, contact email, etc.) on a periodic basis (probably every 12-18 months). This option would not entail any fee or contractual agreement for the PI End User. However the Executive Board does not see this as a viable option, as the amount of resources required to check the necessary supporting documentation and other administrative overheads would be too large a financial burden on the RIPE NCC membership. The lack of a periodically-renewed contractual relationship with the PI End User, while providing them this service, may also cause complications. *IMPORTANT* Your opinions and feedback on this proposal are vital in shaping a resource certification system that best suits your needs. We encourage you to discuss this matter on the RIPE NCC members-discuss mailing list. Following approximately six weeks of discussion (ending on 30 March 2013), the Executive Board will consider feedback from the list and propose options on moving forward on this matter which will be properly communicated. There were 825 full responses, the most ever received for a RIPE NCC survey. The RIPE NCC is extremely grateful to all those who participated in the survey. The OII analysed the survey data and produced 52 key findings. Over the past 18 months, the RIPE NCC examined the key findings and took action on them where appropriate. The PDF document detailing all 52 key findings and the actions taken by the RIPE NCC is now available at: http://www.ripe.net/survey2011/key-findings-and-actions The document outlines the actions taken by the RIPE NCC so far, but it should be noted that work continues in all areas. Although the meeting is mostly technical, it is also a chance for people to meet and network with others in their field. RIPE 66 will take place on 13-17 May 2013 in Dublin, Ireland. The RIPE Programme Committee (PC) is now seeking content proposals from the RIPE community for the Plenary, BoF and Tutorial sessions at RIPE 66. The PC is looking for presentations covering topics of network engineering and operations, including but not limited to: - IPv6 deployment - Managing IPv4 scarcity in operations - Commercial transactions of IPv4 addresses - Data center technologies - Network and DNS operations - Internet governance and regulatory practices - Network and routing security - Content delivery - Internet peering and mobile data exchange Submissions Attendees of the RIPE meetings are quite sensitive to keeping presentations non-commercial, and product marketing talks are strongly discouraged. Repeated audience feedback shows that the most successful talks focus on operational experience, research results, or case studies. For example, presenters wishing to describe a commercial solution should focus on the underlying technology and not attempt a product demonstration. Presenters who are proposing a panel or BoF are encouraged to include speakers from several (perhaps even competing) companies and/or a neutral facilitator. In addition to presentations selected in advance for the Plenary, the RIPE PC also offers several time slots for “lightning talks” which are selected immediately before or during the conference. The following requirements apply: - Proposals for Plenary talks, BoFs, Panels and Tutorials must be submitted for full consideration no later than 24 February 2013, using the meeting submission system at: https://meetings.ripe.net/pc/ Proposals submitted after this date will be considered on a space-available basis. - Presenters should indicate how much time they will require (30 minutes for talks is a common maximum duration, although some talks can be longer). - Proposals for talks will only be considered by the PC if they contain at least draft presentation slides (slides may be updated later on). For BoFs and panels, proposals must contain a clear description as well as names of invited panelists/presenters. - Due to potential technical issues, it is expected that most if not all presenters/panelists will be physically present at the RIPE meeting. - Lightning talks should be submitted using the meeting submission system. They must be short (10 minutes maximum) and often involve more timely topics. They can be submitted at any time. The allocation of lightning talk slots will be announced one day prior to the relevant session.
