RIPE Minutes Announcement ------------------------- The RIPE24 minutes are now available from the RIPE document store : ripe-m-24 24th meeting 1996 April DFN/TU - Berlin We decided to already publish the minutes, although we expect some working group minutes to still come in. When we have received more minutes from the working groups, an updated version will be posted. FTP Access ---------- All RIPE minutes (and more) are available via anonymous FTP from host ftp.ripe.net. Type "ftp ftp.ripe.net". Login with username "anonymous" supplying your email address as the password. After logging in, type "cd ripe/minutes/" followed by the command "get filename". The relevant filenames for this document are: ripe-m-24.txt for the ASCII version ripe-m-24.ps for the PostScript version Electronic Mail Retrieval of Documents -------------------------------------- Documents can also be retrieved from the RIPE document store using a mail server program. For more information on how to use the program, send email to: mail-server(a)ripe.net with "send HELP" in the body text. RIPE NCC Interactive Information Server --------------------------------------- Type "telnet info.ripe.net". This is a menu driven service allows the document store to be browsed. error in TR data for April

Hi all, You might have noticed that the numbers of hosts in Turkey (TR) dropped significantly in April. This was due to an error in the count. (NOT a joke) The Belgian Minister for Telecommunications came up with the idea of introducing a "bitrate tax" on information transmission. A number of mainstream newspaper articles mentioned a similar initiative in the U.S. of A. (an important argument to convince adversaries !) The new tax is/was supposed to bring in between .3 and 3 billion ECU per annum. On a remotely related topic : a wellknown organisation recently asked for our advice on the perceived need for Internet regulation. <double sigh> Eric.

The Telecom Minister of the Dutch speaking part of Belgium replied that he could not agree because the Dutch speaking part of Belgium seems to consume more bits than the French speaking part of Belgium, so a tax that would flow to the 'country' is unacceptable. -Herman-

Since 1991 Gradara, a little city in The Marche known for the beautiful Rocca Malatestiana (Malatesta Fortress) and for the tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca (as told by Dante in the Divine Comedy), has given life to the cultural institution "Gradara Ludens" which has promoted important national events centering on games and simulations, experiencing directly the importance of games and the opportunities that games, the reasoning required by games, teaching of games and through games, and offering games for the building of rich and productive human relationships, and for producing culture and entertain. The panel of judges for the competitions is made up of the most famous italian word game experts of word games and the panel chairman is Umberto Eco. A limerick is a kind of light verse, a brief and playful little poem of ancient tradition with precise rules: it must consist of five verses, the first line must end with the name of an existing city, which rhymes with the last word of the second and fifth lines, while the third verse rhymes with the fourth. The limerick appeared for the first time in print in England around 1820, but its origins are certainly much older. It came to be used as nursery rhimes, as in the case of the work of Edward Lear (1812-1888), as well for satirical and bawdy verses at dinner parties. It arrived in Italy in the 1920's by way of the translation of the very successful "Children's Encyclopedia". The 1930's saw the beginning of the diffusion in the universities, together with the interest in nonsense literature, and in the middle of the 1970's - shortly after the complete translation of Lear's "Book on Nonsense" and "More Nonsense" by the prestigious publisher Einaudi - - the Italian production of limericks reached its true peak. Today the fire is still smoldering under the ashes and the five irreverent verses appear often in the pages of literary magazines and in the cultural supplements of daily newspapers, not to mention in the margins of schoolchildren's workbooks. Are we on the verge of a new fiery outburst? All European citizens are eligible to participate in the new Tour of Europe by sending their compositions (written in any language of the EU) either by regular mail ("Giro d'Europa in Limerick" - Gunpowder, via Donizzetti 36, 20122 Milano, Italy) or by e-mail (the address is limerick(a)it.net) The rules are very few. Participants may send rhymes inspired by any city in the European Union, including obviously their own.
