Hostcount for August 1996

Dear all, Here is the hostcount for August 1996. The table shows an increase since last month of more than 86,000 (or 2.9%) to a total of over 3,110,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe. DE shows the highest increase for August with more than 24,000 hosts more than in July. In some countries we see quite a significant decrease this month, also in countries were the hostcount is done remotely. We couldn't find any explanation for this besides general connectivity problems and servers not responding. The hostcount can also be found under ftp://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/hostcount. A number of alternative charging models are considered which can be used to generate the required revenues. These models are described in detail and the benefits and drawbacks of each are considered carefully, resulting in a recommendation for a charging model for 1997. This document provides input for the deliberations of the RIPE NCC contributors committee. The revenue figures and a particular charging model are expected to be decided at the contributors committee meeting on September 11th, 1996. After that meeting the revenue and charging model chosen will be described in a separate document, to be submitted to TERENA for formal endorsement as the charging mechanism to be implemented in 1997. This document will remain unchanged, providing documentation and background of the models researched. Those interested in the mathematical basis for the recommended model may want to acquire the postscript version (because the equations are readable). ***** Apologies if you receive this messages several times ***** Image and Vision Computing Journal Call for Papers DOCUMENT IMAGE PROCESSING AND MULTIMEDIA ENVIRONMENTS The Image and Vision Computing Journal announces a forthcoming special issue on Document Image Processing (DIP) and Multimedia Environments. Papers published in IVC have addressed a wide variety of image processing applications. This special issue will focus on DIP and related multimedia research, and will present a collection of high-quality papers on the subject. Document image processing is now an established field within the electronic imaging world. It is becoming even more prevalent wherever paper documents need to be transformed into electronic format for long-term storage, backup, multiple access and retrieval. The process of extracting information from often poor quality images of documents is a topic of active research. Multimedia research is still in its infancy but is a fast expanding area. Whilst the emergence of the World Wide Web has given a boost to the awareness of this phenomenon, there are a number of problems to be solved, not least the integration of DIP into multimedia applications. With the increasingly widespread use of multimedia to convey information in electronic form, where sound, moving images and graphics could be part of a compound document, the role of DIP becomes even more prominent. Thus a special issue on DIP and related multimedia research is a timely activity. Original high-quality contributions are solicited on all aspects of DIP and related multimedia applications. Emphasis will be placed on novel techniques, analytical methods, and design and optimization approaches rather than on specific software packages. Prospective authors are encouraged to submit contributions in the following areas or related subjects: o document decomposition strategies o OCR o form-based processing o compound document modelling and representation o compound document processing and analysis o compound document navigation and retrieval o fax recognition o DIP related standards o interfaces to DIP and multimedia environments o image and multimedia databases o network issues relating to image transmission o distributed or networked DIP and multimedia applications o security and encryption issues o business process re-engineering for DIP DIP and multimedia environments, as it is evolving, entails cooperation across corporate, educational and international boundaries. Thus preference will be given to papers that promote sharing of theory, techniques and experiences. Also papers that reflect a spirit of cooperation among multiple sources are encouraged. Authors are requested to submit three copies of their manuscripts to one of the Guest Editors listed below. A new (version of) a draft document is available in the RIPE document store: RIPE NCC Activities & Expenditure 1997 Short content description ------------------------- This memorandum describes the activities to be performed by the RIPE NCC and associated expenditure during the year 1997. The current status is draft by the NCC. The contributors committee is scheduled to discuss and approve the document on September 11 1997. It is expected that TERENA will endorse it shortly after. The companion document "RIPE NCC Revenue & Charging 1997" (ripe-chr) describes the way to generate the necessary revenue. The draft of that document is expected to be available Tuesday September 3rd. FTP Access ---------- All RIPE documents and Internet RFC`s are available via anonymous FTP from host ftp.ripe.net. Type "ftp ftp.ripe.net". Login with username "anonymous" supplying your email address as the password. After logging in, type "cd ripe/drafts/" followed by the command "get filename". The relevant filenames for this document are: ripe-act.txt for the ASCII version ripe-act.ps for the PostScript version Electronic Mail Retrieval of Documents -------------------------------------- Documents can also be retrieved from the RIPE document store using a mail server program. For more information on how to use the program, send email to: mail-server(a)ripe.net with "send HELP" in the body text. RIPE NCC Interactive Information Server --------------------------------------- Type "telnet info.ripe.net". This is a menu driven service allows the document store to be browsed. After reading documents you are prompted as to whether you would like to receive an email copy of the document you have just read. If you would, you simply enter your email address and the document will be mailed to you. Below are details of alternative methods of access. Gopher Access ------------- The same documents are available via a "gopher" server at "gopher gopher.ripe.net". MIME Mail Reader ---------------- Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant Mail Reader implementation to automatically retrieve the RIPE document by FTP or mail server.
