As of March 22, 1995, the NSFNET Backbone Service to SURAnet at College Park, Maryland (ENSS 136) was retired. This node was also the interconnection point with MAE-East. All NSFNET service directly to the SURAnet regional was eliminated with the retirement of ENSS 136. SURAnet is the first regional to be totally dependent upon its new service provider. The NSFNET Backbone service will continue to have connectivity to MAE-East+ until April 30, 1995. --Elise -----------------------third message

Due to the continuing explosive growth of the European Internet there is an immediate opening at the RIPE NCC for a Junior Hostmaster Every host directly connected to the Internet needs an address. NCC hostmasters play a key role in the distribution of the Internet address space throughout Europe. Duties The general duties NCC hostmasters comprise: - to handle all address space related requests - to help maintain the databases the RIPE NCC keeps - to propose new activities, where needed - to report to the RIPE NCC Manager The specific duties of the junior hostmaster are: - to allocate address space to local Internet registries - to support local registries where needed - to assign address space - to review assignments made by other registries - to answer address space related queries - to refer non-routine requests to appropriate senior staff Almost all communications with customers and other organisations involved in Internet address space assignment is via the Internet itself. The position provides an excellent opportunity to work at the very heart of the European Internet industry. Qualifications Essential - willingness to learn quickly about the Internet environment - ability to perform administrative tasks reliably - good knowledge of written and spoken English - good communication skills - ability to learn and use Unix and X-windows based computer tools Desirable - work experience in an international environment - previous exposure to the Internet - basic experience with Unix and X-windows based computer tools The position is suitable both for those with administrative skills willing to learn about the Internet and to recent graduates with Internet experience willing to do administrative work. R I P E RIPE (Reseaux IP Europeens) is a collaborative organisation open to all European Internet service providers. The objective of RIPE is to ensure the necessary administrative and technical coordination to allow the operation of a pan- European IP network. RIPE does not operate a network of its own. RIPE has been functioning since 1989. Currently more than 80 organisations participate in the work. The result of the RIPE coordination effort is that the individual end-user is presented on his desk top with a uniform IP service irrespective of the particular network his or her workstation is attached to. In January 1995 1197911 hosts were registered on RIPE coordinated networks. The total number of systems reachable on the Internet worldwide is estimated at almost five million. R I P E N C C The RIPE Network Coordination Centre supports all those RIPE activities which cannot be effectively performed by volunteers from the participating organisations. Besides supporting RIPE activities in general the NCC provides the following services to network operators: o NETWORK MANAGEMENT DATABASE containing information about address space, routing, DNS domains and contact persons o DELEGATED INTERNET REGISTRY a clearing house distributing IP address space o RIPE INTERNET ROUTING REGISTRY o RIPE DOCUMENT STORE o RIPE INTERACTIVE INFORMATION SERVICE A detailed description of these activities can be found in the RIPE NCC Activity Plan (document ripe-110). First ENSS retired

The first router of the NSFNET backbone service has been retired. ENSS 138 (in Atlanta, Georgia) was retired on March 11, 1995. I have been in touch with the Internic and the problem has been resolved at the primary root nameserver. It looks like the secondaries have picked this up too. If your nameservers have bad NS records for 194.in-addr.arpa, please restart them. There is nothing more the RIPE NCC can do at this time. The bad records need to be timed out, which only time (and a few restarts!) can do. Again my apologies for the inconvienence caused by this problem, which is was out of our control. Probably due to an administrative error, the Internic replaced the NS records for 194.in-addr.arpa with something incorrect. This means that reverse-lookups for netnumbers starting with 194.in-addr.arpa will fail, and anonymous ftp, etc, will likely not work. The RIPE NCC does not have means to reach the Internic people at home in the weekend. This means that the problem can only be fixed as soon as we can get in touch of someone. hostcount for February 1995

Dear all, Here is the hostcount for February 1995. The hosts in the following domains are now counted locally: at be cy cz de fr gr ie il it pt sk uk I made two hostcounts for February: one was calculated in the usual way and the other was calculated incorporating the local counts for the domains above. I made some comparisons between the two sets of data and have published only the latter. When the hosts are counted centrally a significant number of zones are missed and not included in the total numbers. It seems clear therefor that the results are more reliable if they are produced locally for each domain. A few countries have made big increases again, to a total increase since last month of over 91,000 (or 8.3%) to almost 1,200,000 machines in the DNS in Europe. There is one thing to note about the de domain: It shows an enormous increase since last month. The person responsible for the hostcount in Germany did some research on that and found a zone with the following kind of A RR's: host.x.y.z.1. a x.y.z.1 host.x.y.z.2. a x.y.z.2 host.x.y.z.3. a x.y.z.3 host.x.y.z.4. a x.y.z.4 host.x.y.z.5. a x.y.z.5 host.x.y.z.6. a x.y.z.6 host.x.y.z.7. a x.y.z.7 host.x.y.z.8. a x.y.z.8 [...] 65,000 A RR's. In the actual hostcount are only 25,000 A RR's included because the host command contains a limit for hosts per zone: *** maximum of 25000 hostnames reached This implies that you can add another 40,000 hosts to the figures for the de domain. This incident shows what the hostcount actually represents: Technically, it is a count of A records in all zones that could be retrieved. Heuristically, it gives an approximate overview of the current machine population. This should remind us to be careful with the objectivity of the hostcount and the purposes we use it for. Guenther ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Third International Summer School on Advanced Broadband Communications 26th-30th June 1995 After the success of the "First and Second International Summer Schools on Advanced Broadband Communications" distributed between Aveiro (Portugal) and Madrid (Spain) in July 93 and 94, RACE Project BRAIN is pleased to announce its Third International Summer School on Advanced Broadband Communications to take place from 26th to 30th June 1995. This year the School will be distributed to at least four different and geographically distant sites and will constitute a unique event joining a thorough presentation of ABC (Advanced Broadband Communications) with its real use and demonstration. It will include tutorials, in-depth lectures, panels and demonstration of results achieved within R&D projects. Among others the following issues will be addressed: * Cell based technologies * Access Networks * Evolution Scenarios * Management of ABC Systems. * Multimedia * Future Visions of ABC Most important, the 1995 Summer School itself will be a demonstration of ATM based broadband communications, applications and services where a number of results and achievements from different RACE projects will be shown in real operation. The first 3 days of ABC'95 will provide a technical view of ABC and the second 2 days the user view of applications, market and future trends. The 1995 Summer School will be a distributed event where a multimedia CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work) tele-training application will join the lecture rooms of the different physical sites into a unique virtual lecture room such that lecturers and participants lose the sense of physical separation and work together with full interaction. At least, the following sites will join ABC'95: * Madrid, Spain ( ETSI Telecomunicacion, UPM ) * Aveiro, Portugal ( CET / University of Aveiro ) * Turin, Italy ( CSELT ) * Sophia-Antipolis, France ( Theseus Institute / AGORA ) Switzerland, The Netherlands and Austria will also join Summer School 95 as subsidiary sites. These will incorporate the full set of functionalities as the main sites and aimed to serve a (reduced) local audience. The pan-European ATM trial connecting the National Hosts from countries involved in this event will provide the necessary communication infrastructure for ABC'95. This will require a complex collaboration between several institutions and R&D projects within the framework of EU initiatives. Overall technical co-ordination is the responsibility of the IBER Project.
