The minutes include all comments we have received. The documents include all amendments according to the decisions by the committee. Hi, here are some of the expansions / explanations that correspond to what could loosely be referred to as "my neck of the woods". I have touched on some not directly under my hat as well, with the danger of possible misrepresentation. Are you collecting the expansions for inclusion in some web page? Note that there is a general issue here of what to include and what to leave out (either intentionally or by accident). Tread carefully here... > FICIX Finnish Commercial Internet eXchange. > FUNET The finnish academic & research network organization. > GIX Global Internet eXchange. Note: some confusion may arise here, if you see the term "the GIX", this usually means the MAE-East Internet exchange point in Washington DC, USA, which could also be referred to as a "de-facto NAP". There has been plans to physically distribute the GIX and thereby create a "D-GIX". The technical/strategic plan is to create a market for providing bandwidth at layer 2 between the individual GIX installations. However, this has not yet happened, at least not as an operational infra- structure. The internet exchange located at KTH is however usually referred to as "the Stockholm D-GIX" or "the D-GIX at KTH" or possibly simply "the D-GIX" (which could be confusing). > IntIS Internet Iceland. This is the successor of SURIS, which used to be the academic and research network in Iceland. > KTH The Royal institute of technology in Stockholm (really "Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan"). > MFS As I do not think there are any on the RIPE list from this company (?), I can say a bit with the danger of being inaccurate: Metropolitan Fiber Systems. They are perhaps most known in our circles for operating the physcal infrastructure of the MAE- East internet exchange, and are also involved in MAE-West. This is a PTT-style organization with its outspring in the US, however they are beginning to establish themselves with a presence in cities in europe as well (I've heard of Stockholm and Paris, I'm sure there are more). > NORDUnet The network service provider which has as its primary goal to take care of the common needs for international Internet connectivity for the academic and research networks in the nordic countries. > Oslonett Commercial Internet service provider in Norway, with "home base" in Oslo (as the name should indicate). Currently has a large chunk of the dial-up Internet access market in Norway. > PowerTech Commercial Internet service provider in Norway, also in Oslo. Seems to aim at the lower end of the market. > STUPI Peter Lothberg's private consulting company. > SWIPnet Commercial internet service provider in Sweden. Daughter company of Tele2, one of the PTTs in Sweden. > Telia One of the PTTs in Sweden. This PTT was at one time the only PTT in Sweden, and is (AFAIK) by far the largest in the current swedish "general" PTT market. > Uninett The norwegian academic & research network organization. > Ommissions are simply gaps in the original minutes... NCC seeks Business Manager

Dear colleagues, it has turned out to be impossible for all practical purposes to find suitable candidates for deputy NCC manager with a solid Internet service provision background. With hindsight this is of course not surprising given the current demand for such people. On suggestion of the contributors committee we have therefore decided to look for a business manager who will take responsibility for the business aspects of running the NCC. This will allow the NCC manager (me) to concentrate more on the technical aspects of the work. As you can imagine I am quite keen to have this person on board as soon as possible. Could you please be so kind and give the advert below the appropriate circulation and point good people to it. Thank you very much Daniel Karrenberg RIPE: Coordinating the Internet in Europe. The RIPE Network Coordination Centre provides coordination services to all European Internet service providers. Due to the continuing explosive growth of the European Internet there is an immediate opening at the RIPE NCC for a Business Manager Duties The business manager will be responsible for NCC finances, reporting, general customer relations and some specific services. The business manager will be closely involved in planning, budgeting, hiring personnel and the development of new projects and services. The specific responsibilities of the business manager include: o the Quarterly RIPE NCC Reports o the Annual Report o budgetary control o customer billing o customer training programme o support the NCC manager in planning and budgeting o identify the need for and plan new projects and services Essential Qualifications o work experience in an international environment o experience with financial controls o very good knowledge of written and spoken English o good communication skills o ability to learn and use Unix and X-windows based computer tools Desirable Qualifications o experience in Internet service provision The position provides an excellent opportunity to work at the very heart of the European Internet industry. R I P E RIPE (Reseaux IP Europeens) is a collaborative organisation open to all European Internet service providers. The objective of RIPE is to ensure the necessary administrative and technical coordination to allow the operation of a pan- European IP network. RIPE does not operate a network of its own. RIPE has been functioning since 1989. The result of the RIPE coordination effort is that the individual end-user is presented on his desk top with a uniform IP service irrespective of the particular network his or her computer is attached to. R I P E N C C The RIPE Network Coordination Centre providers coordination services to European Internet service provider. The NCC's widely recognised neutrality and impartiality are a key requirement for its success. The NCC also supports RIPE activities where appropriate. For more information about NCC services and activities see the RIPE document store. The NCC is funded by all Internet service providers in Europe who operate local Internet registries. The RIPE NCC currently employs eight staff (1 part time). NCC staff are formally employed by TERENA. TERENA TERENA is the European Association of research networking organisations and their users. TERENA has been created by a merger of the RARE and EARN associations. TERENA carries out technical activities and provides a platform for discussion and education to encourage the development of a high-quality computer networking infrastructure for the European research community. Conditions RIPE NCC personnel is employed by the TERENA association under their standard employment conditions. The salary will be compatible with a managerial position with significant responsibilities and depend on qualifications and experience. Costs of relocation to the Netherlands will be fully met. The appointment will be for one year with possible extension. Location The RIPE NCC is located at the Scientific Center Watergraafsmeer (WCW) in Amsterdam. The offices are situated at NIKHEF, the Dutch National Institute for Nuclear Physics and High Energy Physics. The most exciting network conference in the Nordic countries is this year in Copenhagen. NORDUnet provides you with information about what is happening and the development of the net. Almost 40 speakers have been invited for giving presentations, and Vint Cerf, (one of the originators of TCP/IP) will be giving his vision on the future of the Internet.
