IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT Additional background information for the forthcoming RIPE meeting, Prague January 25-27th, 1993 ----------------------------------- SIGHTSEEING TOUR AROUND PRAGUE Meeting place : Jose Marti Street 2, Prague 6 (near the KRYSTAL hotel) Date and time : 10 a.m. Sunday, January 24th, 1993. During the city tour you will see all the main sights of the "Golden Town", e.g. the St. Wenceslas Square, Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, Old Town Square and many others. The sightseeing tour will last for about 2 hours and will end again near the hotel KRYSTAL. Tickets can be bought 30 minutes before the time of departure at the meeting point (tickets cost 150,- Kcs each - you will be able to get an official receipt). TAXI FARES >From January 1st, 1993 the taxi prices in Prague have been increased. The maximum fare per kilometre has been increased from 8 to 10 Kcs (all other taxi fees remain the same). The approximate cost of a taxi from the Airport to the RIPE Meeting venue (Dejvice, Technicka Street) is approximately 136 Kcs (distance of 13 km @ 10 Kcs = 130 Kcs plus a fixed charge of 6 Kcs). MONEY EXCHANGE There is a bank at the airport where you can change money. Alternatively there are lots of money exchange offices around the town of Prague. Exchange rates approx: 1 US dollar = 28 Kcs 1 UK pound = 50 Kcs 1 DM = 18 Kcs 1 ECU = 35 Kcs SECURITY ROOM There will be a baggage store for people who have luggage etc that they need to store safely. FAXES, TELEPHONES and LOGIN sessions Whilst at the RIPE meeting you will be able to receive faxes on the following number: + 42 231 12463. (The fax is located in Jan Guntograds office in Zikova Street). Public telephones are located on either side of the entrance to No 2, Technicka Street - the venue of the RIPE meeting. A terminal room with approximately 20 terminals will be available for use by the attendees from 8 am until 9 pm each day. The terminals are in the Regional Computing Centre, 3rd floor, no 4 Zikova Street (which runs parallel to Technicka Street). There will be signposts. Attendees will be able to connect via Telnet sessions. RIPE NCC Quarterly Report #3 Available -------------------------------------- The third quarterly report from the RIPE NCC is now available from the RIPE document store. It details NCC activities during the third quarter of 1992. In particular it gives statistics of the European Internet Registry and the NCC information services. As always we eagerly look forward to your comments and suggestions about the report in particular and NCC activities in general. We will *not* distribute paper copies of the report at the Praha RIPE meeting in order to save some trees. As usual there will be a short presentation of NCC activities during the RIPE meeting. How to get it: The document ID is ripe-79. Gopher, WAIS and WWW users should be able to find it. FTP users can get it from host ftp.ripe.net. Misc. Info Services and User Support items

Unfortunately I'm unable to make the RIPE meeting at the end of this month. I wish you a fruitful meeting - particularly in the area of networked information services and user support. A couple of items you may wish to consider... The new NSFNET NIC is saying that they may charge for access to their information by non-US sites. They (amongst others) are tasked with providing a Directory of information resources. To be of any value - such a resource would depend on there being a two way flow of information between US and non-US sites in gathering together this info. I wouldn't be happy about them charging for information collected by/from us!! Several reports are available from the Mailbase Server - either via email or anonymous ftp - that may be of interest. In particular - I would like your help in updating the report on Information Sevices and User Support in Europe. Please contact me if you wish to contribute an entry for your country. Tony Bates Joins RARE/RIPE NCC for two Important Technical Projects =================================================================== I am very happy to announce that Tony Bates will join RARE to work with the RIPE NCC team starting January 18th for a period of six months. Tony is a well known personality within RIPE due to his participation in many RIPE activities and his work for the UK Joint Network Team including international connections. Tony will work on two projects: "Internet Service Specification" and "Implementation of a Route Server for policy based routing across the GIX". A short description of these is appended below; Tony will present them in more detail during the Praha RIPE meeting. The projects are run in conjunction with the RARE technical programme. The main funding for the projects has been provided by SURFnet through RARE. Both projects have a tight schedule. Their success depends on the cooperation of many people within RIPE. I urge all of you to give Tony the support he will need. Daniel Karrenberg RIPE NCC Manager Internet Service Specification ------------------------------ The goal of the project is to produce a document describing all aspects of a "useful Internet service". The intention is to provide guidance to both service providers and customers. All important aspects of Internet services will be covered. This includes essential secondary aspects such as DNS service, routing protocols, routing policy features. Service providers will be able to use the document to specify the service they intend to offer. Users will be able to use it as a checklist for the services they require. The document will reference existing sources such as the relevant Internet RFCs. It is intended to give the document wide circulation including publication as RTC report, RIPE document and/or RFC as appropriate. Implementation of a Route Server for policy based routing across the GIX ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The goal of this project is to produce a functioning route server (RS) as specified in "Internet Routing in a Multi Provider, Multi Path Open Environment" by Bates, Karrenberg, Lothberg, Stockman and Terpstra. The function of the RS will be to present unified routes to European destinations to routers on the GIX. The results of the project are: - refining the specifications on routing policy information storage in the RIPE database - route server software - software to derive route server configuration information from the RIPE database - a technical report describing the above This project requires close coordination with the RIPE NCC for the database related aspects and with the operators of transatlantic links, especially EBONE. The resulting software components should be realised with generalisation of the route server concept in mind. The results will be publicly available. It is intended to give the resulting documents wide circulation including publication as an RTC report, RIPE document and/or RFC as appropriate. ----- End of Forwarded Message

To Prague Meeting Attendees: At Prague there will be a meeting of the group on relations between the Research, Academic, and Educational nets and the Com- mercial nets (the RAEC group). I will have a document on some current issues between these nets, including an overview of network traffic types, for discussion at that meeting. I urge everyone interested in these topics to attend. Some of you may be interested in this report. -- Jill Abstract of Trip Report: Internet Engineering Task Force Jill Foster - Newcastle University, UK Chairman: RARE Information Services and User Support Working Group IETF - Washington: Nov 16-20, 1992 This report is about 1000 lines long - but is structured to allow you to skip over bits not of interest to you. My main reasons for attending (thanks to funding from RARE) were to: o represent RARE Information Services and User Support Working Group (which I chair) [RARE is the Association of European Research Networks] o join in the User Services and associated WG sessions. o co-chair a WG session on networked information retrieval tools. o co-chair a BOF session on network training materials. This informal report is in note form and deals mainly with the areas of User Support, Network Training and Networked Information Retrieval, although reports of the plenary sessions are also included. In 1992 it has happened more than once that an unsuspecting person sent a message which was intended for the RIPE chairpeople or the NCC to this whole list. Therefore we have decided that the name of the list for 1993 (and thereafter, funding permitting :-) shall be ripe-list(a)ripe.net and ripe(a)ripe.net will henceforth point to the duty mail person at the NCC.
