Press Contact: Deborah Howard, Executive Director (310) 827-8466, <deb.howard(a)ispc.org> The Internet Service Provider's Consortium (ISP/C) is pleased to announce that the second Internet Service Provider's Forum (ISPF) will be held from March 8 to 10, 1999 at the Town and Country Inn in San Diego. Dave Baker, Vice President, Legal And Regulatory Affairs, MindSpring Enterprises, Inc., will be the keynote speaker. Mr. Baker's keynote, titled "Open Access Should Not Be A Pipe Dream", will address the problems facing ISPs who seek to offer customers high-bandwidth access. As the race to construct broadband connections intensifies, Baker will present a carefully reasoned and compelling keynote argument for enforcing open systems. The speaker roster for ISPF 2 currently includes Internet notables such as Paul Vixie, Doug Humphrey, John Curran and many more industry figures. Pre-conference workshops include Avi Freedman (Netaxs) on BGP, Patrick Gilmore (Pacific Gateway Exchange) on IGPs, Jason Zigmont (Critical Path) on sales and marketing, and a first of its kind, a free, all-day Spam Panel sponsored by Critical Path. Other ISPF scheduled events include three days of educational sessions, panel discussions, and round-table meetings, a vendor exhibit hall and presentations as well as two days of intensive pre-conference training sessions. "Our sessions will be organized into specific tracks to help ISPs make most efficient use of their time," ISPF Conference Chair Jason Simonds says. "We have a dynamic mix of hand-on workshops, interactive discussions, and educational sessions planned that will benefit ISPs of all sizes. Hello Esther, As we approach the public comment period on the various proposals expected by ICANN, the Internet community is left without a mailing list of record -- the IFWP list is dead! This is unacceptable!!! To accommodate the discussions surrounding the PSO, ASO, DNSO, and MAC proposals, I humbly suggest that ICANN host a generic policy list ASAP. At the very least, ICANN should designate a single external list as the list of record. I suspect that ORSC and others would be happy to host such a list, and could have one operational within 24 hours. This needs to be addressed quickly. First DESIRE-II Web Cache Managers Workshop 25-26 Feb. 1999 Utrecht, The Netherlands The first DESIRE-II Web Cache Managers Workshop will be held in Utrecht on the 25th and 26th February, 1999. This is a training workshop aimed at existing web cache managers who are interested in learning more about the technology and related utilities. Re: possible protest of the NTIA/NIST/ICANN/IANA contract action.

ORSC has lead the fight to make ICANN more open. Many people have supported us in these efforts. Now, we have another opportunity to do so. While I'm not a government contracts expert, it would appear that this NIST transfer of responsibility is giving ICANN control over the assets that will be delegated to the PSO and the ASO. If this is true, then the USG is giving up their oversight over these functions. And this is happening without ICANN being open, without ICANN having a membership structure, and without ICANN having any SOs (supporting organizations) defined and/or constituted. If ORSC is to object to this single source award, my suggestion is that we do so *only* to force ICANN to present a business and a financial plan to the Internet community -- not an unreasonable expectation. RIPE Region Hostcount for December 1998

Dear All, below is the hostcount for December 1998. The table shows an increase since last month of over 100,000 (or 1.3%) to a total of almost 7,900,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The fr domain shows the highest increase for December with approximately 21,300 hosts more than in November. - Brief Notes on this Hostcount - There is again a little bit of disturbance in terms of countries coming in and out. gw was included after zone transfer problems last month were no longer present. It's contribution is shown on subtotal line 2 of the table. ae and sd were excluded due to difficulties with zone transfers at the top level, therefore their contribution last month is subtracted from the total change (on subtotal line 3). Noticeable was a large drop for se. A look at the error file shows this was due to the common 'zone transfer refusal by a major nameserver' problem. The last quarter of 1998 showed an increase of 1.3% on the previous quarter. This is the lowest quarterly increase since the hostcount started. - Other Ways to Obtain the Hostcount - The hostcount can also be found under ftp://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/hostcount.
