Regards Daniel Karrenberg RIPE NCC Manager ------- There currently is an opening at the RIPE NCC for a Junior Administrative Staff Member The position provides an excellent opportunity to work at the very heart of the European Internet industry. Junior administrative staff can be promoted to administrative or technical staff positions based on the experience gained, their abilities and preferences. In fact the position will become vacant because the previous occupant will be promoted to a technical staff position. Duties The duties of the RIPE NCC Administrative Staff comprise: - to organise and support all administrative tasks of the RIPE NCC - to maintain the databases the RIPE NCC keeps - to report on administrative issues to the RIPE NCC Manager - propose new activities, where needed, to the RIPE NCC Manager The specific duties of the junior administrative staff member are: - answering general telephone calls and electronic mail - dealing with routine inquiries and administrative requests - referring non-routine requests to the appropriate staff member - maintain the NCC Library and Documentation Qualifications Essential - willingness to learn quickly about the Internet environment - ability to perform administrative tasks reliably - ability to learn and use computerised tools - good knowledge of written and spoken English - good communication skills Desirable - work experience in an international environment - previous exposure to the Internet - knowledge of spoken Dutch The position is suitable both to those with administrative skills willing to learn about the Internet and to recent graduates with Internet experience willing and able to do administrative work. Time Frame The position is open immediately and will be filled as soon as possible but no later than November 1994. R I P E N C C The RIPE Network Coordination Centre is funded by all European Internet service providers. Its task is to ensure the necessary administrative and technical coordination to allow the operation of a pan-European IP network. RIPE does not operate a network of its own. The RIPE NCC is staffed by 4 full time employees: one NCC manager two NCC technical staff one NCC administrative staff The RARE association provides the legal and financial framework for the NCC. NCC staff are employed by RARE. Short content description ------------------------- The PRIDE project will end in October this year. At the 19th meeting RIPE decided to add maintenance of the Routing Registry and PRIDE tools to the NCC core activities. The amended NCC activity plan is now available as a draft. The only change is the addition of activities 3.9 and 3.10. For 1995 the effort required by these activities will be 1 engineer FTE. The text of this amended activity plan is up for approval at the 20th RIPE meeting in January 1995. FTP Access ---------- All RIPE documents and Internet RFC`s are available via anonymous FTP from host ftp.ripe.net. Type "ftp ftp.ripe.net". Login with username "anonymous" supplying your email address as the password. After logging in, type "cd ripe/drafts/" followed by the command "get filename". The relevant filenames for this document are: ncc-act.txt for the ASCII version ncc-act.ps for the PostScript version Electronic Mail Retrieval of Documents -------------------------------------- Documents can also be retrieved from the RIPE document store using a mail server program. ----------------- Announcement / Preliminary Program / Registration Form NSC'94 The Network Services Conference 1994 Great Western Royal Hotel London, England, 28-30 November 1994 Invitation ---------- Open computer networking is no longer the sole domain of universities and research institutions. Today, governments, schools, public organizations, commercial enterprises and private individuals are actively using and supplying information over the global Internet. How will these various network communities cooperate and interact? How will the academic and research community adapt to the new network reality? How will the network and networking tools now available stand up to the explosion in number of users and amount of information available? How will we train novices? What will we pay for and what will be for free as the commercialization of the network progresses? Will we be inundated by advertising over the net? These are only a few of the questions facing network service providers and users alike. Building on the success of the previous Network Services Conferences in Pisa (1992) and Warsaw (1993), NSC'94 will focus on the issue of providing services to customers, paying special attention to the exciting developments in global tools and services. We will address the impact of the new global tools on service development and support, the changing function of traditional tools and services (such as archives), new services (such as multi-media communications), the future role of the library and the effects of commercialization on networks and network services. Customer support at all levels, and the role of support in accessing global services, will also be covered. Call for Volunteers: The NetWorld+Interop 94 Paris Conference Assessment Team (CAT) Ziff-Davis Exposition and Conference Company is seeking student volunteers to serve as quality control monitors for NetWorld+Interop 94, to be held in Paris, France, October 26-28, 1994. This is a unique opportunity for students to attend the industry's premier networking conference and tradeshow, while helping us improve the quality and consistency of the conference. As a CAT member you will receive: * Complimentary conference registration for all three conference days * Complimentary NetWord+Interop General Conference notes * Complimentary lunch all three days * Special NetWorld+Interop 94 T-shirt, and * Entrance to the NetWorld+Interop Exhibition. As a CAT member you will be asked to: * Monitor FOUR preassigned conference sessions, by submitting written reports and acting as the "eyes and ears" of the conference organizers. We will provide you with a basic evaluation form to aid the preparation of the reports. (You will be free to attend any conference session and the NetWorld+Interop exhibition on your "time off.") * Provide an accurate count of the number of people attending the sessions you are assigned to. ("Clickers" will be provided!) Successful CAT candidates will be students currently enrolled in a computer science or electrical engineering course at graduate or post-graduate level. Applicants should have some understanding of (and interest in) computer networking issues. All applications must be received by October 1, 1994. Please note that as a CAT member you will NOT receive any travel or subsistence expenses of any nature from Ziff-Davis Exposition and Conference Company. All, To make up for the belated hostcount of last month, here's the August hostcount already. - most countries have made up for their loss in last month's count - a few countries have taken some quite big steps again, to a total increase of over 45,000 (or 5.7%) to almost 835,000 machines in the DNS in Europe. - The total of 835,000 shows that the number has doubled in slightly over a year (July 1993 - 420,000 machines). One million machines should hopefully be reached at the end of the year. - historical overview appended below - all output on ftp.ripe.net:ripe/hostcount.
