24 February 1994 Press release ============= Ebone continues. At a meeting between the present partners in Ebone on 22 February a proposal worked out by Renater, ACOnet and ECRC for continuing Ebone after 1 July 1994 was discussed. The proposal is for a backbone with nodes in Paris and Vienna, and the intitial backbone will have a 512 kbps line from Vienna to Paris and a 1.5 Mbps line from Paris to the GIX in Washington. Upgrades are planned as the need arises. Ebone will continue to peer with NSFnet and other US networks and Ebone is negotiating peering agreements with EUnet and EMPB in order to secure good connectivity within Europe. Ebone will remain AUP free, ie. it will be open to all IP providers. Partners may connect either to Paris or to Vienna and due to the simplified backbone it is expected that the cost will be lower than for the present Ebone. At the meeting, research networks in nine countries stated their intention to join the new Ebone and others are invited to contact Ebone managements for more information. Dear Colleagues, Perhaps this message may be of interest to those of you who plan to attend Networld+Interop 94 Berlin in June. Apologies in advance to those who may receive multiple postings. Dennis ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Birds of a Feather Sessions (BOFs) Networld+Interop 94 Berlin, 6-10, June, 1994. Birds of a Feather Sessions (BOFs) will provide Networld+Interop 94 Berlin attendees with an opportunity to discuss networking issues in an informal, after hours, atmosphere. These sessions are not intended for formal presentations, and certainly not for vendor product presentations, but rather as a forum for discussions of "unsolved problems". BOFs are open to all Networld+Interop 94 Berlin attendees, including Exhibition attendees, and no special registration is necessary. For your information, the following is a sample BOF description: Resource Reservation Protocols ------------------------------ Several new classes of distributed applications have recently been developed, such as remote video, multimedia conferencing, data fusion, visualisation, and virtual reality. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Internet's primitive service model in inadequate for these new applications. In recent years there has been a flurry of activity devoted to the development of new network architectures and service models to accommodate these new applications requirements. One of the key components of any such architecture is Resource Reservation. In this BOF we will discuss requirements for resource reservation, and describe some of the existing and proposed protocols (e.g. ST-II and RSVP).

RIPE 17 actions status report

Below is the list of action items from the RIPE meeting (and previously). The actions are grouped into two different categories: "Done" and "Open". If you are on the list with an action against your name, would you please reply confirming the status of that action : ie. whether it has been "Done" (hopefully) or whether it is still "Open", with an expected approx date for completion, if possible. This list is in response to a number of requests from people for more support and continuity of work items between meetings. PRESS RELEASE Brussels, 2 February 1994 HIGH SPEED NETWORKING SYMPOSIUM: 'Tentative steps towards a Electronic Highway for Europe' The highly successful third symposium on High Speed Networking for research in Europe was held in Brussels today. It was organized by RARE (Reseaux Associes pour la Recherche Europeenne) with support of the European Commission. That there is an increasing need for a debate on high speed networking issues may be concluded from the attendance of this symposium by more than 150 experts from over 24 countries worldwide. The attendees gathered to present and review the status of high speed networking for research in Europe and discuss the future and developments in this field. The majority of the participants came from networking organizations and universities, but also high-level research institutions (CERN, INFN,...), Space laboratories (CNES, NLR,...), governmental organizations, Public Telecommuni- cations Operators and the European Commission were well represented. The speakers came from various networking organizations in the U.S.A., the U.K., France and the Netherlands, Telecom in Finland, KTH Tele-informatics in Sweden, Expertel, Alcatel, CNES and EDF-DER in France. The keynote-address made by Mr. L. Rosello (Head of Unit DG XIII C/3) on behalf of Mr. M. Richonnier (Director of DG XIII/C), emphasized the technological developments relating to Telematic applications in connection with the Fourth Framework Programme and expressed the Commission's support to establish and maintain a research networking infrastructure. Fifteen presentations of high standards added to discussions on topics as: - high speed services plans applied to backbone technology - coordinated ATM testing and services within Europe - existing advanced networking implementations ( wide area high speed networks - SuperJANET) - engineering trans-oceanic 44 Mb/s TCP/IP networks - multimedia experiments in SGN, the Stockholm Gigabit Network - ATM interconnection and crossing European borders - ATM experiments for High Rate Space Telemetry Transportation Focus of the day was on ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) technology; the transmission technique for the coming decennia. The symposium brought together people with practical experience of ATM from the research, Public Networking Organizations and service communities, as well as major commercial user organizations. Examples of on site, intersite and even international testing with ATM were covered, as well as research work related to supporting ATM at higher speeds. Some of the current gaps in ATM implementations were identified, but it was noted that technical specifications in these areas had been, or were being, produced. New in the field of ATM are the experiments that have been made with interconnection and cross-border connections. Particularly the latter are of vital importance to the European situation. As Prof. Bjorn Pehrson (from KTH/SICS) said: "Requirements for bandwith will explode in a few years time". Appropriately Kees Neggers (Director of SURFNet and President of RARE) stressed in his presentation the need for increased international cooperation and funding for the provision of a pan-European Network Service. This plea was taken up by Prof. Paul Van Binst (University of Brussels and RARE Treasurer) in his closing address. He urged the Commission and organizations that are in need of good networking facilities to give "five percent of the European Union's spending on research for the European backbone". The announcement of the fourth symposium on High Speed Networking for research in Europe in 2 years time was received with a warm welcome by all those present. Dear RIPE-ers, Good news! We have received confirmation from Pedro Amorim that the 19th RIPE meeting can be held in Lisbon, Portugal. The dates suggested at the 17th meeting were 26-28th September. However they cannot make this date. Pedro has suggested alternatives, of which we *strongly* favour 12, 13 and 14th September. If anyone knows of any major networking conferences scheduled for these dates or any other major clashes that we have overlooked, can you let me know ASAP - otherwise we will try to set the meeting for this date. I would be grateful if you could reply to me within one week, as we would like to confirm as soon as possible, the preferred week to Pedro.
