Dear colleagues,
I would like to bring to your attention "something completely different".
In order to celebrate the 40th anniversary of EARN, the EARN 2024
conference will take place in Athens on April 20-21 2024,
in conjunction with the RIPE SEE 12 Meeting, and with significant
material and organizational support from the RIPE NCC.
EARN, the European Academic and Research Network, started in 1984
as the first multi-vendor computer communications network in Europe,
before the Internet became widely available in the region.
For the next ten years, until it merged with RARE (Réseaux Associés
pour la Recherche Européenne) to form TERENA in 1994, EARN was active
in introducing computer networking throughout Europe and beyond
(former Soviet republics, the Middle East and North Africa).
Among the speakers at the conference, a number of inductees in the
Internet Hall of Fame are expected:
The organizers look forward to meeting again with EARN colleagues,
and will be delighted to see others who are interested in the history
of computer networks for an occasion to share ideas, lessons learned,
memories, and history.
More information is available from the conference site
https://www.earn2024.net/.
The RIPE NCC has very kindly set up the registration page
for EARN 2024, and has also arranged a special rate, as for SEE 12,
for bookings at the conference hotel.
As one of the organizers, I am very much looking forward to this
event, as also to SEE 12 itself.
I hope to see many of you there, at one or other meeting,
or even both of them.
Niall O'Reilly
sometime technical specialist at the EARN OSI Operations Centre
in Amsterdam (see presentation at RIPE50, from about offset 0:38:15).
