RIPE Mailing List Code of Conduct
The RIPE community’s strength comes from its breadth of experience, diversity of views, and an open, respectful exchange of ideas. These are values that we want all of our community members to uphold. Please treat each other with tolerance and respect. Free speech and an open exchange of ideas is encouraged and celebrated. Demeaning, intimidating or harming other community members is wrong. We are especially sensitive to behaviour that offends based on gender, sexual orientation, religion, race or ethnic origin, or other perceived social, cultural, or personal differences. RIPE community members should not spam mailing lists, post others' personal information, register multiple accounts to avoid moderation or mislead participants, impersonate others, or make threats. Overt marketing or promotional activities are discouraged. Chairs are responsible for facilitating and moderating the RIPE community's discussions. At times they may direct an individual to cease a certain type of behaviour. Chairs have the authority to moderate or ban disruptive community members if they decide this is necessary. If you believe that someone is behaving contrary to this code of conduct, please inform the relevant Chair or the RIPE Chair. -- Sincerely, Hans Petter Holen - hph@oslo.net - +47 45066054
Friend and Colleagues, Yesterday I did not have one of my best days. I was primed emotionally by doing research for another history article and re-reading old RIPE documents, specifically ripe-001. I apologise for overreacting to a friendly poke by Shane which I am sure had nothing but humorous intent. It just hit me at the wrong moment and I was unable to see the humor. I apologise to those who I hurt. Please accept my assurance that this was not my intent. My intent was to make a specific point pertinent to this discussion. Afterwards Randy explained it much better than I did. I do hope you will be able to re-read my contributions in this way at a later time. I also apologise to those who I pulled into a deteriorating flow by setting the wrong example. anagram(This) happens; especially on e-mail and I should have known better. So allow me to start again with a new thread responding to Shane's original message. Maybe we can all show true RIPE style this time around. I will certainly try my very best. Daniel

I too would like to apologise to the list, to my friends and to the RIPE community in general. I allowed my concern to overflow into what with hindsight was an ad hominem attack on Nurani. I've been using email for more years than I care to remember and I still overlook the fact that a tone of voice and a smile don't get transmitted along with the bald words. To Nurani I apologise unreservedly. To you, my friends, please accept this as a promise to try to do better. Those of you who deal with me regularly may have noticed that I'm a little more hair-triggered than usual. There are a few things going on health-wise and personally that are at the root of this. They may or may not be fixable, but they are no excuse for bad behaviour in public. Nigel

Just a quick note from me to say thank you for turning this discussion around, into a more constructive one. Nigel, dear Nigel, I very much appreciate your apology. Not because I was personally hurt, but because it’s important for us to ensure that the space we have here, is one that encourages open, and honest discussion. And we should lead by example. So thank you. We can disagree on substance, but let’s keep the discussion live and thriving, while still respecting each other’s different views. And you are right, email is a horrible medium for these types of discussions, leaving so much tone and intention open to interpretation. We should all know that by now, but it seems we sometimes need to be reminded of this! :) Once I have worked my way through the big pile of work on my desk this week, I will get back into this discussion and contribute as best I can. Nurani
