L.S. I twice received the email that my SW probes need to be updated. They run 5040 and 5080. To my surprise however my only HW probe also runs 5080 and has also not (yet?) been updated automatically, implying that 5080 is still current? Updating some of my SW probes would mean a considerable effort since some run on hardware with memory constraints - not allowing an update of OpenWRT - or within docker for which the image has not been updated by the author yet. Is there any indication when support for 5040/5080 probes will be discontinued? Then I can plan the effort required. Met vriendelijke groet / Regards, Ernst J. Oud

I wondered about the same a while ago. See the answer from Trix at https://mailman.ripe.net/archives/list/ripe-atlas@ripe.net/message/I3WBBI4MI... Bjørn

HW and SW probes are not directly comparable in this regard; as of now 5080 is the latest for HW (and we are in th process of releasing upgrades), while 5130 is for SW where only the hosts can upgrade, hence our notifications.
Updating some of my SW probes would mean a considerable effort since some run on hardware with memory constraints - not allowing an update of OpenWRT - or within docker for which the image has not been updated by the author yet.
OpenWRT 5130 is available and just today Lukas wrote a mail stating that even the auto-upgrade works, which is cool! I believe 5130 is hardly different from other 5xxx series in terms of resource needs.

The hard deadline is not set yet but it's the ballpark of months; it kind of depends on at what pace the population upgrades [1]. Your contribution would help! :-) Regardless, we'll start enforcing up-to-date versions so older versions will eventually have to be upgraded. [1] we do see people upgrading as a result of notifications, so this process mostly works Regards, Robert

I'm assuming the sequence of events you have in mind is to upgrade the HW probes first and only afterwards contemplate blocking <5130 probes *both* HW and SW variants, is that assumption correct? You wouldn't want to hold SW probes to a higher standard than your officially supported HW probes, right? Thanks, Lukas
