j.root-servers.net ICMP?
Hi, Can anyone elaborate on why my Atlas probe is still trying to ping j.root-servers.net, while this seems futile since a few weeks?
Seems like it is anycasted. The closest instance to me pings just fine. PING j.root-servers.net (192.58.128.30) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from j.root-servers.net (192.58.128.30): icmp_seq=1 ttl=57 time=7.52 ms On Thu, 3 Nov 2011, Marco Davids wrote:

Yep, I noticed (by looking at some of the public probes). Quite interesting. I wonder what the rationale might be. -- Marco

Probably because the probe isn't trying to get an answer, it's trying to observe whether the node is up and what the latency is. So a failed ping is just as valuable as a successful ping. --Richard On Nov 3, 2011, at 10:59 AM, Marco Davids wrote:

We actually have real-time maps showing what the full networks sees in terms of ping RTTs. Specifically for j-root: https://atlas.ripe.net/atlas/rtt_maps.html?msm_id=1016 We'll also have anycast maps soon -- see https://labs.ripe.net/Members/kistel/new-ripe-atlas-features-in-the-making Regards, Robert On 2011.11.03. 12:02, Richard Barnes wrote:
