Discrepancy between built-in test and my own test

Hi, I have a probe (probe ID 1005229) running on a VM in the Oracle Cloud. On that probe I have a ping test (measurement ID 85299016) to Google. Thus, an Atlas controller instructs my probe to do a latency test every 5 minutes. The result of that test is fairly consistent at around 7 ms. However, there is also a built-in measurement running on all Atlas probes to Google, every probe automatically performs this measurement every 10 minutes. The results of that test is fairly consistent at around 1 ms. Why is there such a difference between these two equal measurements? Both to Google, both from the same probe. Any clues? Regards, Ernst J. Oud

Hi Ernst,
However, there is also a built-in measurement running on all Atlas probes to Google, every probe automatically performs this measurement every 10 minutes.
Do you have this measurement ID? I could not find public built-in measurements to Google [1]. Knowing that would help out. thanks, /giovane [1] https://atlas.ripe.net/measurements/public?id__lt=1000000&sort=-id&toggle=builtin&page_size=100&page=1&type=ping

Giovane, Go to https://atlas.ripe.net/probes/1005229/results/wellknown where the number is the ID of your probe. Top graph shows latency to Google, Facebook and Wikipedia. Click on any datapoint for tracemon data. Regards, Ernst J. Oud

Ah, the “discrepancy” that I mentioned is caused by a weird route difference between Google.com and Google.nl from that probe, resulting in an RTT of 7 ms. instead of 1 ms. Regards, Ernst J. Oud
