Yes, you can always ask for a replacement. We are still quite a bit behind in shipping probes because the transition from v3 to v4 probes was quite a bit of work.

Or, come to think of it, replace the probe with some code on smallish hardware, like a Raspberry Pi?

We are looking into this. There is no timeline, or even a commitment to provide this option. But we are actively preparing for a pilot. Philip
