Is there an actual reason, why it was decided to let users manage the software probe installation? The intention here is/was that many users already have their own machine (VM or server or home router or such) that can be used as the platform. One can also easily spin up and dedicate a new HW, like a lingering Raspberry Pi, to this.
I think the Software Probe is a good idea, as it lowers the entry bar to running a probe considerably. Nevertheless I would second the suggestion of providing a "virtual hardware" probe as virtual machine template, using the same OS and software stack as the current hardware probes. Yes, any virtualization will introduce some additional noise into the measurements... But looking at our datacenters - other than network infrastructure components, a few firewalls, and a pair of NTP appliances, everything is running on a hypervisor. Whatever might be a target for measurements (other than the Anchors), will probably be virtualized in some form too. Alex.
