Hi, Probably we don't need to spoof all address space, instead only if spoofing enabled just spoof to some predefined address range. Hello, The probe ID is 10156. It is attached to a third interface on my router. The graphs have been stalled for the last four days. The probe went online on June 26 and all was well until this happened on July 24. Thanks for looking. Outdated for more than one day?

Hello, Recently, all Built-in-Measurments for my probe began showing "Outdated for more than one day" and none of the graphs are current, most show some white space at the far right hand side. My Total Uptime: 99.56% (31d, 22h, 30m) and I have power cycled the device twice trying to solve the problem. Any ideas on how to fix this will be appreciated. Thanks, FG

Ping Fails (ns.ripe.net)

In reviewing My Probe stats, it appears that (ns.ripe.net) was once able to ping the server, but now it appears to be failing. All my other ping stats under My Probe show successful pings to other servers, but for some reason ns.ripe.net is failing. Does anybody have a suggestion of what might be going on, since ping is working to all the other servers. -Alby

Measurement #1013405 contains: "result": [ { "x": "*" }, { "late": 20, "ttl": 61, "from": "88.79.15.141", "size": 96 }, { "x": "*" }, { "x": "*" } While "late" is documented <https://atlas.ripe.net/doc/data_struct#v4400_traceroute>, the lack of "rtt" field is not and crashes tools like json2traceroute.py.

[UDM] What value to give to 'requested' when 'type' = 'msm'?

The documentation <https://atlas.ripe.net/doc/measurement-creation-api/> says: "probes": [ { "requested": 1, "type": "msm", "value": 1000002 } ] but, from my tests, if you do so, you get only one probe, whatever measurement #1000002 actually used. To get all the probes, I had to indicate a very large number in 'requested' (unless you remember or count the actual number).

IPv6 and Atlas probe v3

My probe works fine on IPv4, obtaining IP address, router, and DNS servers via DCHP. The IPv6 capability has me curious with two questions... I statically configured the IPv6 address via the web interface. I gave the probe an IPv6 address from my prefix, a gateway address, and the IP address of a DNS recursive server provided by my tunnel vendor. The IPv6 address shows up OK on the web interface ("Internet Address") The AS Number also shows up fine. The Gateway is "Undetermined/Unknown" The IP addr of the DNS server is listed as shown below. In the text table below the configuration info, I see: ("V" is a check, "X" is an X) Static Enabled Probe Knows Probe Uses Last Static Address Given IPv6 V V V 2001:470:xxx:xxx::xxx DNS V V X 2001:470:20::2 Question #1: Why is there an "X" for DNS in the "Probe Uses" column? Is there something wrong with that DNS server? So if there is an IPv6 (rogue) RA on you network, it can/will override part of the static configuration. We're unsure if this will change in the future. ..." I do have RA support on the subnet, though I would not classify it as "rogue". :) The RA provides the IPv6 prefix, prefix length, and the IPv6 address of the recursive DNS server. This RA support has been used by another box on the subnet, and it seems to work fine. Question #2: Does the Atlas v3 probe use RA if they are present? Thanks.

Timeout on Ping Measurements

Greetings, What is the default timeout on ICMPv4 user-defined measurements made on RIPE Atlas? I am guessing something like 1.2 s based on observations, but I'd like to know definitively. Also, is it possible to increase the timeout? One of the targets I have been measuring often takes a very long time to respond (due to congestion or link-layer retries) and I would like to have a high (5 second, perhaps) timeout on these pings. I haven't noticed an option to set this when setting up the measurement, but it's very possible I've overlooked something. Cheers, Rusty Dekema

About 20% of the time I try to access the website, the browser times out. Granted, I tend to access the website when it is the early morning hours in Europe, perhaos maintenance is being performed. Are there any plans in place to make the website more available to global viewers?

A Tutorial on Large-Scale Measurement Platforms

It begins by surveying active measurement studies that paved way for the deployment of such platforms. It then describes the internals of the RIPE Atlas and SamKnows platforms, their architecture and surveys the work published from insights discovered from the collected data. The first part concludes by introducing the current Large Scale Measurement of Access Network Performance (LMAP) standardisation efforts in the IETF. The second part of the tutorial provides practical training on how to virtualise an OpenWrt-based Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) and bootstrap it to register as a Measurement Agent (MA) with a controller. The MA is then used to install a measurement test, schedule the reporting of the measurement test results and use a REST API to send and retrieve the measurement results back from the collector. The tutorial also provides training on how to use the RIPE Atlas REST API to create User Defined Measurements (UDMs), and retrieve the UDM measurement results. It concludes with a description of the UDM result data structures and a brief of how programming tools can be used to analyse such data. [UDM creation API] Which parameters are mandatory?

It seems that in <https://atlas.ripe.net/doc/measurement-creation-api/> (now linked from the Atlas documentation so I assume it is no longer in alpha test), there is no mention of which properties are mandatory and which are not. I have to resort to trial-and-error. For instance, for DNS measurements, the property query_class appear to be mandatory (otherwise, I get an error 400) which is suprising (it defaults to IN in all the DNS clients I know).

Atlas probe - virtual appliance?

Hello, maybe should be interesting providing RIPE Atlas probe as an virtual appliance (VMWare, XEN, VirtualBox etc). Handling will be much easier and deployment cheaper (as no extra hardware will be required to run new probe). Virtual apliance should be still managed by RIPE NCC (like current hardware probes) in terms of upgrades and so on. I think this may be interesting to consider. With regards, Daniel

troubleshooting a new probe configuration

Hello, I just got a new RIPE Atlas probe at NANOG in New Orleans, US and am trying to get it up and running. I configured a port for it on my firewall with IPv4 DHCP service and DNS. The firewall rules should permit just about all traffic. I confirmed that the port was operational by connecting a computer to it and could browse to external websites, etc. When I connect the probe to this port, I can see in the logs that it gets an IPv4 DHCP address, but doesn't seem to do anything else. The power light on the probe is solid, the second light appears to be off, and the third and fourth lights are blinking. It's been this way through several power-cycles and several days. BOOTP/DHCP on a probe with static network configuration

Hi, I have two brand new RIPE Atlas probes. Both are reported as 'connected' on my My Atlas page, both run the 4520 firmware, and both correctly report and use the static network configurations I gave them per the instructions at https://atlas.ripe.net/doc/static-config However, both probes still send BOOTP/DHCP requests every 3 seconds. Are others seeing this behavior with their probes that have static network configurations? Can this behavior be changed? Thanks! Jay B.

New Atlas Probe

Hi, I obtained an Atlas probe at NANOG last week... I've got it connected (natted) and registered, but it's not showing up under my probes as yet. How long does it usually take? I can see traffic on the port that i've connected the atlas probe too, so assume its able to get out. Cheers, Lee

Newly-defined traceroute measurement failing with "name resolution failed: non-recoverable failure in name resolution"

Hi, I have two probes that seem to work just fine; their built-in measurements work, I can see their results from my "My Atlas" page, etc. I happened to notice something weird about the ping times to c.root-servers.net, so wanted to define a traceroute measurement to see if there were route changes that could explain what I saw. However, the only result that I'm getting is "error": "name resolution failed: non-recoverable failure in name resolution". I picked "Resolve on probe", and used "c.root-servers.net" as the destination. I'm pretty sure I didn't make a typo, because I've copy-n-pasted from the dst_name of the result JSON. For reference, the UDM ID is 1010361 and the probes are 4936 and 4938. Each probe has a working DNS server configured, according to the "My Probes" view. Thanks for any help, Bill (P.S. I created a new UDM using the IP address, to work around the DNS problem, but it'd still be nice to understand what I did wrong with the other one.)

Troubles with registering the probe if assigned by Ambassador

Hi, I'm not sure, but seems that if the probe was initially assigned to ambassador then ambassador assigned to the host the probe in not appearing in host's account. Example 1 Probe F81A674D7482 was assigned to levon.avagyan(a)gmail.com by me ambassador alex.saroyan(a)gmail.com. In Ambassador page I see this probe as "Online, not hosted", and host does not see the probe on his account at all. Example 2 Probe A0F3C1C44063 was assigned to surenispiryan(a)gmail.com again by me ambassador alex.saroyan(a)gmail.com. He didn't connect the probe yet to network. In Ambassador page I see the probe status "Applied" and host does not see the probe in his account under "my probes" at all. Regards. /Alex

RIPE Atlas slides for AFNOG

the atlas folk have been kind enough to hand me a batch of probes to hand out key engineers at the afnog workshops in lusaka. i want to give maybe a half hour talk on the probes, something that starts from the beginning, o what is ripe atlas, o how do i install a probe, o how do i register it, o how do i interpret the web pages, o etc. vesna was kind enough to give me her dublin preso, but that assumes a *lot* of background. i need ripe atlas 101. thanks. randy

Hello and thanks for reply! Now probe is work. I was read all FaQ, but nothing help. The network is efficient for 100%. Experiments help me. Hello! I have problem with my probe v3 (ID 11003, FW 4520). First i used DHCP (at Home, for tests), all was worked fine. Then i reconfigure my probe to Static IP (by manual). Static IP necessary to install my probe 24/7/365 in server room. We don't use DHCP. But probe can't connect to network... I brought probe to home, connect to DHCP network. Router give IP to probe. But probe still disconnected on atlas.ripe.net at least 3 hours... LEDs: 1 - ON 2 - OFF 3 - Slow blink 4 - ON 5 - ON Power reset - no result. Try to change Router cfg (ip, dns, mask) - no result. Probe still disconnected. I read, that if set static IP - probe try to test setting. By LEDs - "Network test"? But 3+ hours "Network test"? DHCP work correctly (Router - Zyxell Keenetic, last firmware), PC work without problems on full autoconfiguration (IP, mask, gateway, DNS) Can you help me? P.S. Bug when creating DNS6 with udp_reply_bytes via API

Hi RIPE Atlas developers, I found a bug in the DNS API. When creating a DNS measurements via the API that have udp_reply_bytes property set, they never leave the "Scheduled" state and eventually fail. When I query the status of the measurements I notice that they have the udp_payload_size property set to true in stead of the value given with udp_reply_bytes. This is different from measurements created via the interface, where udp_payload_size reflects udp_reply_bytes. Also, it appears I can only origin 80 probes (by probe id), whilst in the interface I can origin from 500 probes. Is that correct? Would it be possible to (temporarily) increase my limit to 1050 probes? Best regards, -- Willem

Probe doesn't seem to automatically recover from IPv6 connectivity failure

Hello. Probe (v2) doesn't seem to recover from all network failures automatically. It currently connects using IPv4 and reports IPv6 tests as "can't send". I can't ping probe on IPv6 and it seems like it doesn't talk IPv6 at all on that VLAN, although router sends RA's every minute. In web interface it says that it has IPv6 address (all other things under IPv6 are "Undetermined/Unknown") but it doesn't actually participate in network at all. Only router talks IPv6 in that network, according to tcpdump. I think not recovering from IPv6 failures is a bug. Somehow, it still recovers from IPv4 failures. Problem appeared after I had it physically disconnected from Ethernet for some hours. Before that, probe also didn't have connection to internet for a day. I wish I would not need to pull the power every time this happens. Although it's rare occasion that anything is down here. Thanks.

Ripe atlas measurement issues

Hello Atlas team, I have a problem concerning downloads of measurement data from ripe atlas data. In order to evaluate some measurements, I use a script which downloads measurement data of the current week. This worked perfectly until the changes in the download section of ripe atlas. Since then, the urls are not considering time constraints and return measurement data from further in the past. My urls look like: https://udm01.atlas.ripe.net/api/v1/measurement/1000002/result/?filename=ud… I also tried the start_time parameter, instead of &y / &w but the problem stays the same. I have a packet capture running most of the day and I can see connection initiations between 178.63.78.18 and the probe but still my probe appears as "disconnected" on atlas.ripe.net Appreciate any help you can lend in getting the probe online. Hi, this is not directly an ATLAS issue - but at least a RIPE related question. A friend of mine has problems at the moment with his server hoster. In particular, the PTR record for the server's IP cannot be resolved because the attached nameserver answers with NXDOMAIN. Not a big problem, espacially not a RIPE problem. But here's the response he got from his hoster a few days ago (translated from german). It's a bit... Well... The right word would be: "venturesome": -------- Today at 5:21 PM we got a reply from a RIPE technician who acknowledged that this is a known issue. Not only our IPs are affected by this. The RIPE had a large synchronisation problem between their root name servers which leaded to the situation that the responsible name servers are not connected to the right IPs. The RIPE technician said, the problem could only be solved by a serialized restart of all root name servers, followed by a resync. -------- Funny, eh? A few sentences later: -------- At the moment, the RIPE technicians are busy with preparations for this restart and sync. Actually, the restart of the servers will be done in the night from monday to tuesday. The synchronization process needs about eight more hours to complete. After that, your PTR should be resolved correctly. -------- A RESTART of the ROOT NAME SERVERS? "PTR doesn't work!" - "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" But the best part: -------- We got information that not only our IPs are affected by this, about 27% of all available IP subnets are affected - which is a huge amount. -------- The RIPE status page says: It's all OK, we have no planned maintenances. So I'm very sure the hoster is lying to us and should get a really long wooden nose. But before we make bigger trouble I would like to hear from some others (maybe a RIPE employee?) that the PTR zone was not harmed in the last few days. Probe marked offline but responds icmp echo requests

Hello, today I got a notification that my probe 4365 is offline. But it still responds to ICMP echo requests. Is there a way to bring it back online to the atlas network, preferably without physical access to it? Regards, Johannes Matheis

New Probe Deployment

Hi Atlas team, Fresh from RIPE66 meeting I've just deployed my new atlas probe this morning and can see it's pingable locally on the network with it's dhcp'ed address. I am just wondering now however how long it takes before this probe should be visible at http://atlas.ripe.net as I need to give it a fixed IP address for live network deployment.
