Hello, This is Ibrahim Ethem Coskun from University of Nevada, Reno. I'm currently working on an Internet Measurement project with Professor Mehmet Hadi Gunes. We are modifying paris-traceroute's source code and set the flow identifier of each packet (both sending and returning packets) to a constant value for every traces. So that, we want a trace to follow the same path whenever we traceroute the same target. However, I get the below warning messages from each probe : paris-traceroute -T 500 -i -l -M 5 -p icmp -r 44000 -a hopbyhop -n " + target_ip [WARN](TracertImpl.cc, 335)ICMP reserved words 0 0 0 0 0 [WARN](TracertImpl.cc, 330)Bad return flow id 0xd24e from 4.69.152.80 So, what does this warning mean, I checked the source code but couldn't find and information regarding this issue, I also email paris-traceroute team, but no responses. I googled my question and found a similar question emailed to to you ( https://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail/archives/ripe-atlas/2012-July/000534.html). Feedback about the new webinterface

Hi! First, thanks for the new web interface. I really like how you show the most important parts of the results, e.g. decoding the NSID for DNS measurements, and showing the traceroute with editable geolocation. Nevertheless I have some feedback: On https://atlas.ripe.net/probes/, when I search for probes matching "6939", I get the results in a list view of matching probes. In the list view, I can see the probe's ASN. But when the result set is small (e.g. 2 probes only), I do not get a "list view" but view with bigger "thumbnails", but missing the ASN information. Also viewing the details of a probe does not reveal the probes ASN. Similar with IP addresses. When viewing the results of a measurement on the map, if a click on a probe I get the probe's IP addresses. But when watching a probe's details I can not see the IP addresses of the probe. For me it is strange to get the probe's IPs and ASN not when watching the probe's details. This is quite some interesting info when selecting probes or when analyzing why the result from a certain probe was bad. Thanks Klaus

Exact semantics of DNS' use_probe_resolver

The DNS-specific option use_probe_resolver is mentioned in <https://atlas.ripe.net/docs/measurement-creation-api/> but with little indication of the semantics. My experience is that some probes (with the default retry=0) return several responses, with the same "prb_id", but different "from". I assume it means the probe had several resolvers configured and tried them all. Am I correct? It may question some conclusions of <https://labs.ripe.net/Members/stephane_bortzmeyer/how-many-ripe-atlas-probe…>. Is there an option to switch to the more typical behaviour of a DNS client (try the first resolver configured and switch to the second if the first does not reply)?

Dear RIPE Atlas staff, I'm a little confused. I need to add a NIC handle, you say. "What is a NIC handle? A NIC handle is the unique identifier of a person. It is basically the person's unique ID and it helps to keep different people with the same name apart from each other. Whenever a person object is referenced in another object, they are referenced by their NIC handle ("nic-hdl:") and not by their name. See an example person object" How can a handle meant for a person be used for a machine? Is this correct? I had my Probe drop out a few times, I replaced the Apple USB Power Supply with a new one and it seem better now. some probes not returning NSID

Dear Martin, I'm sorry for this, we recently made a change which keeps the location of those probes which are geolocated (i.e. *without* a manually set address) up to date. Previously such probes were geolocated once, and never again. It was never the intention to overwrite manually given locations. Unfortunately, it seems that a number of probes were erroneously marked as being automatically geolocated when in fact their owners had carefully provided a location. We are now looking at our logs to see how many probes might have been affected by this, and whether we can automatically revert the location in those cases. As for your point about not being able to enter the location, there is a text box above the map popup which should allow you to enter a textual address. If this isn't working for you, please let me know. Apologies once again. Proble locations (Changed because of Geo-IP)

So I've noticed that (at least some) probes got the location automatically updated based on Geo IP. However, this is frequently fundamentially broken. One of my probe moved from San Jose, CA to somewhere in the middle of Texas. (Broken Geo-IP location for AT&T DSL users). (The example I talk about is proble #10770) Kind of sad... not sure how many had this happening. Specially as I took care to put the exact lat/lon in the User interface in the past. Now I can only reposition it by dragging on a map - and that seems to be broken as well (at least it fails to save when I try to correct this probes location on Chrome) I wonder how many and why there was a decision to change the location. Hi all, I'm trying to do some basic DNS UDM result parsing using Sagan. I'd like to have an easy way to extract the NSID. I followed the instruction found here: https://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail/archives/ripe-atlas/2014-May/001475.html 'from ripe.atlas.sagan import Result result = Result("your-JSON-result-blob-here") print(result.responses[0].edns0.options[0].nsid)' That didn't work, as I get: AttributeError: 'Result' object has no attribute 'responses' So I figured I need to use a DnsResult, instead. problems creating measurements with old web interface

Hi! Today I created some DNS tests with the old web interface. The creation process was fine, but the measurements did not work. (my target was ignored and "use probe's resolver" was automatically enabled). See UDMs: 1841832, 1841839, 1841840 btw: I can not stop 1841839 and 1841840 via the new web interface The DNS measurements only work if I create them via the new web interface. regards Klaus PS: IMO the new web interface is not very user friendly when choosing the probes - eg I failed to select 100 probes word wide (how to do this in the map)? It would be nice to have a textual alternative as my browser gets incredibly slow when showing all the probes on the map.

MacOSX: probe add problems (create measurements)

Goodday, I'm trying to add some new measurements, but the probe selection's "+New Set - Manual" and "+Reuse a set from an old Measurement" both just flash the screen, looks like it opens a drop down windows, and closes it before I could even blink my eyes. This was tested on the Firefox 35.0.1 as well as on Safari 7.0.3 on MacOSX 10.9.3. Hendrik

Bug? RIPE Atlas interface mixing up legacy IP addresses

The corresponding probe seems to be down now /0\ I made a screen cap to document it. Proposal for public HTTP measurements

Dear RIPE Atlas users, The topic of publicly available HTTP measurements in RIPE Atlas comes up from time to time. There were a number of discussions about pros and cons for this feature over the years (including exposing probe hosts to unnecessary risks of other users "measuring" just about any kind of HTTP content out there), with no firm outcome. While we understand that this feature would come handy for some of our users, it does not benefit everyone. Therefore our proposal is the following: 1. We'll enable HTTP measurements to be performed by all atlas users, from any probes. 2. The targets of such measurements can only be RIPE Atlas anchors (these already run HTTP servers, see https://atlas.ripe.net/docs/anchors/). 3. Parameters like costs, minimum frequency, maximum number of probes involved, etc. will be set by the development team, just as with the other measurements. 4. The RIPE NCC will still be able to support other, vetted HTTP measurements as long as it benefits the community, as well as other HTTP measurements that we deem operationally useful. These will be evaluated on a case by case basis. Please speak up at the MAT working group list (mat-wg(a)ripe.net) if you support / don't support this proposal, of if you have any other opinion about it. You can do it by searching for “worldwide” (there is autosuggestion) and the widget will ask the number of probes and the tags you want to use. The number of probes is suggested and bounded according to the maximum number of probes selectable for the measurement. The idea is that whatever you write in the text field, it will try to help/guide you creating the valid (and, if needed, complex) selection you were looking for. E.g. you can do a combination by searching for “Canada ipv6” to select all the ipv6 probes in Canada Of course it can be improved, so let us know if you have other feedback! Deprecating the old measurement UI

Dear all, In October last year, we introduced a new UI for browsing and scheduling measurements. For details, see: https://labs.ripe.net/Members/suzanne_taylor_muzzin/ripe-atlas-new-measurem… Your feedback about this was predominantly positive, and we’d like to thank everyone who helped this development with suggestions and bug reports. As stated at the time, we plan to deprecate and eventually remove the old interface (both the UI and the "API" it used). Our timeline is the following: 1. We'll make the new UI the default, and remove links to the old UI from the RIPE Atlas main menu, around 21 January. The old pages will still be accessible if one reaches them from somewhere else, such as a browser bookmark or hard-coded scripts. 2. Around the beginning of March, we'll remove the old pages from the system (/atlas/udm.html and related pages). This step will include the "deep links" that some of our users directly access to schedule and manage measurements from scripts (notably /atlas/*udm*.json). We'd like to encourage all of our users to switch to the new UI and API in the following weeks, if you haven't already done so. Bug on credit expenditure?

Hi: I've created 12 one-off traceroute measurements today, each measurement requesting 38 probes. According to the results page, the number of credits per measurement is 60, at 38 probes, we got 2280 credits. Any further attempt to create new measurements returned error 104: "Executing this measurement request would violate your maximum daily spending limit of 2200000.0 credits" Unless my math is horribly wrong, or the message is incorrect, I'm well under the 2.2 million credits daily limit. Is there a bug somewhere that's miscounting the usage of credits? MAT-WG proposal for WLAN measurements on RIPE Atlas

MAT-WG, thankyou for giving me the opportunity to present on "The Value of WLAN Measurements for the R&E Community" at the Measurement and Tools Working Group at RIPE69. You can find my presentation and stenography logs at: https://ripe69.ripe.net/presentations/91-eduroam-and-Atlas-RIPE69.pdf https://ripe69.ripe.net/archives/steno/40 To progress this work within the RIPE NCC Atlas development team I'd like your input into the following five (5) points: #1: For "opt-in" WLAN measurements to be enabled on RIPE Atlas As a point of clarification (and reiterated by Daniel Karrenberg) the intention is that ALL v3 probes will be capable of WLAN measurements - but measurements will ONLY be turned on by a probe host. #2: WLAN measurements will support associating to an "open" or 802.1X protected network for the purposes of performing a measurement As an active monitoring network the Atlas probes WILL NOT scan and report on all/available SSIDs. It will ONLY associate with EXPLICITLY defined SSIDs listed in the measurement. For eduroam quality purposes the success/failure of an 802.1X associations is initially the most interesting part of the measurement in determining whether sites are correctly deploying this service. There will be results related to the authentication process. #3: Any measurements performed over the wireless interface are aligned with a request to associate/authenticate to a particular network. The wireless interface will be connected only for particular tests bundled with the association to an SSID. All other tests will be performed via the wired interface as is currently the case. #4: The schedule for implementation will be determined by the RIPE NCC R&D team ...but hopefully your support for this work will allow them to prioritise this work while not jeopardising the other commitments the team has made to the community. #5: This proposal is inline with your understanding of "WiFi measurements" on the Atlas roadmap I'd be particularly interested in your feedback on whether you thought that the WiFi Measurements listed in the http://roadmap.ripe.net/ripe-atlas/ would accomplish the above or something completely different. My feeling from the room was that the above was largely accepted. I'd appreciate those that voiced their support to also do this on the mailing list again. ARIN (US) has joined RIPE Atlas anchors

Dear RIPE Atlas users, We're happy to announce that another RIPE Atlas anchor has joined the network and is now available as a target for probe hosts conducting their own user-defined measurements. The new anchor is called us-qas-as10745 and is hosted by ARIN in Ashburn, United States on behalf of the RIPE NCC. We’re very pleased that, with this latest addition, all five Regional Internet Registries are now hosting a RIPE Atlas anchor! Anchoring measurements (ping, ping6, traceroute and traceroute6) are scheduled towards this anchor from all the other anchors as well as several hundred probes, providing a continual overview of regional reachability. Results of these measurements are available as raw data in JSON format, and visualised on the map and "seismograph" with many configurable features.
