Green spaces improve air quality, reduce urban heat effects, and promote water conservation through sustainable landscaping practices. Integrating nature into educational institutions encourages students and staff to engage with sustainability, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship. Additionally, green campuses can serve as living laboratories for research and innovation, allowing the community to explore sustainable practices firsthand. By prioritising eco-friendly initiatives, campuses not only improve their immediate surroundings but also contribute to global sustainability goals, promoting a more resilient and responsible future. Against this background, the main aim of the Symposium on Greening Campuses at UK Universities: Innovative Strategies for Sustainable Campuses, organised by the UK Consortium on Sustainability Resarch (UK-CSR) https://www.mmu.ac.uk/research/missions/leading-sustainability/UK-CSR and Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, UK, and which will be held on Thursday, 4th September 2025, is to discuss and introduce some of the means via which the principles of sustainable development may be integrated into the operations of higher education institutions. It will also showcase research and innovation in sustainable practices, encouraging students and faculty to engage in projects that contribute to sustainability on campuses. Finally, the symposium will discuss how best to engage learners more actively in campus-related sustainability initiatives and projects, to enhance their understanding and commitment to SDGs and sustainable practices in their future professional activities. The symposium will be of special interest to educators, operations staff (such as facilities management), researchers and students, who will discuss and share best practices, innovative approaches, and findings related to embedding sustainability in campus-related activities.
